  • Just call me Bionic knees

I go into the hospital tomorrow for my first knee replacement. I have yet another 'revised plan of action' to take with me. I have a small bag of acceptable foods that I am taking in my suitcase for "JUST IN CASE moments". I have filled out my 'health accessment form" and underlined in the space entitled Special dietary needs...LOW CARB FOODS ONLY

I have fixed a magnitude of meals for myself and froze them in the freezer for when I return home. I learned from previous experiences that my kids don't want to spend time in the kitchen cooking up my low-carb meals. They'd rather run to Pizza Hut or Taco Bell and bring me unacceptable foods to eat. So, if it can be popped into the microwave with little fuss, I will be safe. I've bought a case of waters and put in the room by my bed. I have my DANDR and my journal on my bedside table and I think I am ready to go.

Good for you for being so well prepared! Will send waves of positive health vibes over the ocean for you while you're in hospital. I'm sure it'll all go splendidly and you'll be so relieved to have it out of the way (or half of it, if you have to do the other one).

    All the very best.... hugs

Re: Just call me Bionic knees

Becky, best of wishes for a successful op and speedy recovery.

Once you have this knee done, please, please don't be too 'shy' to use a walking stick to take the strain off the other knee. You will tend to favour it and that could slow your recovery on what will now be your good knee. I have seen people who were too vain to use a stick because it would 'make me look old', and one lady ruined the first knee op because she put all he weight on it most of the time and strained everything badly.
How long do they think you will have to wait for the other one, once you have recovered?

Re: Just call me Bionic knees

Well, I thought I'd take a few minutes and update you on how my PLAN worked for me in the hospital. I wrote on my dietary sheet LOW CARB MEALS ONLY. The first day they let me eat, they sent me spaghetti, salad loaded with carrots, croutons and beets, cake, and milk. I didn't complain. I picked at the salad and ate what I could, then I ate one of my emergency packets from my suitcase. So, when I sent the tray back nearly untouched...a guy came to my room from the cafeteria. He wanted to know if there was a problem. I said, "No, there is no problem, I eat low-carb" He said, "Oh, you're on a low-carb diet?" I said, "I live a low-carb life-style and the foods you sent don't agree with my plan." He then read off a bunch of food choices that I could have for all three meals. After that...I had delicious meals that fit my life-style. I even had two nurses come in and ask about my meals and weight-loss. When I left, they both said they were going to buy the book and give Atkins a try. But, what I want to say is that you never know when you will need your plan. Have one with you every where you go. There are no excuses for not having a plan. We all generally have an idea where we are going each day and what obstacles we might face. We should always plan for negative people and/or foods that will tempt us. I always carry an emergency baggie with me. Even if I don't think I'll need it. Just in case
