  • Age and weight loss?

Do you feel that being older affected your weight loss negetatively? Did it seem to take longer to take the weight off? And how much weight did you lose during Induction? I read that the average loss during induction is about 5-10% of the #of pounds you have to lose, does this pertain to those of us "more mature" women?

I think that its been a very slow process with me. I am 62 but I blame the medication that I am taking, more than my age

I did my 10% during the first two weeks -- 17 lbs. I don't know if it's my age, my metabolism or my stubborn ol' body, but I lose in a very weird way. I'll go 4, 5 even 8 weeks with no loss at all and then BOOM! 5 or 7 lbs falls off, then I'll lose a few pounds over the next month, and back to a 4-8 week stall. I figure it's the same as 2-3 lbs a week, so who cares how it comes off -- so long as it comes off!

I do think exercise is key -- you got to keep your metabolism in high gear because otherwise it just wants to nap! LOL I've just up'd my exercise routine to 3 60-minute aerobic classes, 2 hours on nautilus equipment, and 2 hours on cardio machines - per week. Now, before you panic, this is up from my barely making it for 5 minutes on the treadmill when I started all this

I think Vitamin supplements are also another key. My doctor has me taking a LOT. The one I notice makes the most difference when I'm not taking it is called Pyruvate or Calcium Pyruvate. She has me taking it to boost my metabolism -- I call it exercise energy in a bottle. If you want the entire list of vitamins I take, I'll be happy to share.

OK, you asked for it I have the world's best doctor (she is VERY pro-Atkins and has lost weight on it herself), and this is the list she made for me:

              Multiple Vitamin with no iron
CoQ10 (Long history of heart disease in my family)
L-Carnitine - sweet cravings, metabolism boost, I think
              Calcium 600
              B-50 Complex
              Chromium Blend
Potassium (I have Restless Leg Syndrome - that addresses that problem)
              Acidophilus
              Fish, Flax, Borage Oil
              Flax meal or seeds*
              L-Glutamine
              Vitamin E
              Pyruvate

*Her most insistent piece of advice to me is to use either psyllium husks, wheat bran or flax meal a minimum of 3 tbsp once a day. She said that in her patients who don't increase their fiber, she sees an increase in (sorry) rectal polyps. She said it had to do with the increase in meats that I am eating. So, I eat mostly wheat bran (lower in calories) either in the form of a hot cereal or crackers (both are just add water and a pinch of salt) every day.

The dosages are just one pill out of the bottle -- except for the Pyruvate, of which I take 4 per day.

And I feel GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! :icondance :icondance :icondance

good advice, what type of chronium, picolate??/(sp??)
lots of research being done on it for BG and chol, scienceitifc even....LOL....
I use almost same as you from Atkins Diabetic revolution book.
Wish my doc was pro atkins. She is kind of ok but goes back and forth.

if heart disease wonder why not asa and folic acid per day, Atkins says 2 gr folic acid a day, my doc says 1 gr.

Joan since heart disease have you had these tests done:
                c reactvie protein
                homosysctiene(sp)
                fibrinogen
                lipoprotein (a).
Atkins says they are best indicator of healthy heart as does Dr Westman from Duke university who studies Atkins.

The Chromium Blend is Chromium picolinate with Biotin.

My doctor is amazing. She's from the Phillipines. She practices traditional western medicine, but is also extremely knowledgeable in Eastern, non-traditional and homeopathic medicine. She'll do acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal supplements, and she has this GREAT herbal cough medicine from China that is the BEST stuff! LOL I get bronchitis at least once a year, and this stuff is the first I've ever had that actually works.

I'm going to print this off and ask her about all of them. For some reason folic acid is ringing a bell -- I'm a little worried she told me to take it and I didn't write it down! LOL Not included on that list is an aspirin a day.

As for the tests - no - none of them that I know of. She did send me up to Dayton for a new machine they have up there (well, it was new four years ago) - I forget what it was called but it was like an MRI for your heart. It came back showing some minor plaque build up but she said it was very minor and not to worry. Other than that -- I'll see what she has to say about the tests next time I go in. Thanks!

Was it CT cardiac, where they score calcification, I just had that done and shows moderate blockage, scared me.
I got some stuff for coughs and plugged nose when in Africa from a herbalist, niger something and it worked magic but we used it all.

ya my doc says folic acid 1 gr but atkisn says 2 gr so I use 2.keeps homosycteine in check.

Slow loser here! I only lost 5 lbs on induction and seem to lose in spurts, like Joan. Sometimes it is 3-4 weeks between losses.

In the last 5 months, I have lost 28 lbs, so the pounds add up even if not as quickly as some others here on the board. I'd rather be a tortise and make goal than give because it is a slow process and go back to being where I was before!

Thanks everybody for answering. It is nice to hear everyone's story and see how much weight was lost and is still being lost. When you listen to the commericals these days they make it seem like people past 40 wont ever be able to lose weight again. Good to know that they are wrong.

"Do you feel that being older affected your weight loss negetatively? Did it seem to take longer to take the weight off?"

With all due respect, whether our weight loss is adversely affected due to our age really doesn't matter. We are the age we are, and nothing is going to change that fact. We can no longer choose to change our lives while we were younger (my greatest regret.) We either do it now, or when we're even older.

But, on the other hand, I started doing Atkins when I was 60 years old. I lost a hundred pounds in about a year. I lost another 50 pounds over the next nine months. I ain't bragging, but I'd put that up against the young'uns.

I know that in my case, I found an infinite number of reasons to never lose weight when I was younger. Of all the reasons I could think of, age would never be one of 'em.

I was a slow loser when I did the low fat and while I lost quickly the first 9-10 months, I attribute new meds for giving me slower loss, lately.
