  • When I was younger...

Back in the 60's and 70's I remember going to school dances on Friday nights in the school gym. We had one a month.

Also, my girlfriends and I'd get together a lot of afternoons after school and practice dance steps while watching WHERE THE ACTION IS on tv. Do you remember the dances we used to do? I remember "four corners", "twist", "monkey", and the 'bump' but I forget some of the others.

How about the boogaloo? Since the title of this thread is -when I was younger- what about some of the old TV shows. This past weekend they had a Leave It to Beaver 24 hour marathon. The last 2 episodes they showed were the first 2 that were shown on TV and they had a different Wally and a different Dad. Blew my mind. Mr. Clever was sitting in a chair and smoking a cigarette. Was very strange. Even though it was a different Wally, it was funny that they had the same mannerisms. And remember dream when we only had about 3 or 4 channels? Boy times sure have changed.

I think I can remember my Sister doing something called the swim. I may be wrong.

JEC48, I thought the very first Ward Cleaver was odd too.

And Dream, you probably remember when there were no panty hose. Had to wear a garter belt or girdle to hold up your nylons. What about when we were younger you HAD to wear a dress to school. Pants were not allowed until, at least for me, I was in 9th grade and they had to be nice slacks, no jeans. By the way, I'm 51.

Yep - I remember the Beaver. I also liked Lost In Space, The Munsters, My Friend Flicka, Roy Rogers Sunday Matinee and Shirley Temple theatre.

I wore a dress also to school and in winter with Pants under! I was fat back then, but double me up with clothes and I looked like a whale. YUK. I hate to think about those days. Yep, no panty hose and I wore saddle oxfords to school because they would last the entire year, never wear out. When they got too small, I passed them down to my sisters. And I got newer used ones from my older cousins. lolol

Also...I had real long hair and I'd use VEGETABLE CANS with both ends cut off as curlers to roll it. I think I have a photo of me with my hair rolled like that somewhere. Man, what was I thinking?

Well dream, your thread has made my mind start thinking of the "old days." I remember in high school that they had a smoking section. If your parent wrote a note to the school advising that it was ok that you smoke, then you could go to a certain section outside of the school to smoke cigarettes.

Yeah, I remember the tin cans. Did you ever use jello as a setting gel? This was before dippity-do.

Hey, my mother made me wear pants under my dress too! And always made me cover my head with an ugly scarf and gave me god awful home perms.

Yes, we had a smoking section...I'd forgotten about that. We also got paddled in school if we were bad by a big huge board that was in the principals' office. I never did, but one of my girlfirends did once for saying a badword in the bathroom and a teacher walked in and caught her. I think she said the SH__ word cause she got a runner in her nylon. lolol

YES, jello in the hair. And then dippity do. I also used beer if I could steal one from my stepdad. I also had a book on making your own cosmetics and my sisters and I'd do the strangest things. Sometimes we'd smear mayonnaise all over ourselves, oatmeal and honey, egg yolks and I don't know what else. We were always in trouble for stealing food and beer for our grooming. We had a huge family and the food was needed to feed us, not beautify us.

The TONI HOME PERMS...Oh my. I looked like I had an afro and used to cry myself to sleep. It was bad enough being the fattest kid in the class...but when you had a perm that made your hair frizz and stick out all over...that was way too much to take. lololol

Dream, great thread! There was a dance the "mash potatoe", remember that? Oh Becky, the saddle shoes, we had two colors to choose from. Black and white or brown and white. It was also the time of the pixie hair cut which I had. My mom was going to beauty school and I was like her manican with her practicing on my hair. Maybe that's why I wear my hair to my bum now. Hehe.

omg! Mash potato! I wasn't around, but my parents loved listening to music from the 60's and 70's so we grew up on it. And I loooove it. The Beatles, and the Beatle Mania, the Temptations, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and can't forget the Bee Gees!
I love this stuff. My mom taught us the dances. I guess it was how we bonded, it was awsome.
