    Re: Had a meltdown

Just had time to check in and was interested in your thread, Sunny. I just re-started last week and had forgotten about the dreaded 'stall'. I'm so happy you are feeling better and have your chin up a little higher today. Sounds like you are doing everything right so this is when you've got to hang on and don't let 'Mr. Stall' get the best of you. We're all interested in knowing when you see those scales move again so keep us posted.
I was also happy to hear that kicking and screaming can be considered 'exercise'. lol

      Re: Had a meltdown

      Hi, Janice....

I was hoping those stalls were for everyone else and I would escape!

But I am loving Atkins. Love what I'm eating and how I feel.

I made some fancy little quiches last night... fun to make and fun to eat. DH is loving my WOE.

And you can bet you'll hear about it when the scale finally moves!

Kicking and screaming is also very emotionally cathartic!

Just read your post Sunny and knowing someone else out there feels like me has made me feel better. I have been feeling discouraged too, but... the point made earlier which made me think was the question... do you feel better? I have to say, YES! I need to put my scales away too....they are bumming me out. There... decision made! I feel so much better... ha ha!

                Hope you do too!

                    Re: Had a meltdown

Hi Sunny, I'm having a bit of a time too. My doctor just had me tested for hypothyroid. She says that my weight gain and inability to lose it, plus some other symptoms, are making her thing I may have a medical problem that is interfering with my ability to lose weight. I feel like giving up! After they took my blood--fasting of course--I went out and bought some supplements that are supposed to help support thyroid function, also some coconut oil, which is supposed to be good for that too. I just wonder how many of us are having thryroid trouble and don't know it!

                      Re: Had a meltdown

Annie, I am still struggling. I broke the 157 pound barrier and now am right up to 158 again.

I did weight watchers in the 70's. I stuck religiously to the plan and only lost 1/4 pound a week. They cut my meat portions, and I finally started losing 1/2 pound a week -- while everyone else was losing 1-1/2 - 2 pounds a week.

So 30+ years later, I am sure my metabolism hasn't increased.

I know I am hypothyroid based on all the symptoms Dr. Atkins lists in his book. But I am so hesitant to start on medication.

I know that I CAN lose weight... just a lot slower than most.

I had been feeling a bit depressed and discouraged about the stall so gradually started drinking more Diet Rite Cola, eating more splenda... and finally even eating a couple of Atkins Bars. Kind of a consolation thing since I wasn't losing weight anyway.

Last night I decided that had to stop. I am feeling SO much better on this WOE... so much healthier... and I can't let it slip away.

So I am starting a new clean two week induction today. Also because my metabolism is so much slower than most, I am going to have to keep my calorie level around 1300. That's going to be tough for me, but at this point it is do it or not lose any more weight.

I have looked at the thyroid supplements on the net... studied them extensively. They may help, but if you have a real thyroid deficiency, probably you might need a prescription medication. If they DO help, PLEASE LET ME KNOW and I will get them, too!

I am going to try cutting the calories first since I have some thyroid function, or else I would not have lost my initial 12 pounds.

Please don't quit. I've considered it, too. There are solutions.

                        Re: Had a meltdown

                        Hi Sunny,
Have you been to the doctor to get lab done to check your thyroid levels? I have hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed with it when I turned 30, nearly 20 years ago. I take synthroid for it.
As long as I have my levels checked and my medication adjusted correctly my weightloss continues to be fairly easy.
Last year my levels took a dive and I gained back 50 pound of the 140 pounds that I lost. Once I was prescribed the correct doseage for my thyroid, the lbs. melted off again.
I don't believe I would have, and still be, so successful with my weightloss had I not taken the medication for my thyroid.
Even though you still have some thyroid function, you can still take the medication for your thyroid to function 100% so you don't have to struggle so much to lose the weight and keep it off.
I wish you much success on any decision you make on this.
                        Sincerely, Sherri

                            Re: Had a meltdown

Thanks so much, Sherri and Desertthorn. I've had checkups. The last one was last August. I had cholesterol and blood sugar levels checked, but didn't even think of asking for thyroid tests since I wasn't dieting then. I've just taken the slow metabolism for granted as part of who I am.

Liv had good things to say about the thyroid meds, too. I have decided to give it one more month, totally cheat free at lower calorie levels and see how it goes.

If it's successful, even modestly so, I will probably be satisfied. If it's heartbreaking for another month, then I will definitely go get it checked.

I don't have insurance, so am pretty careful about planning doctor visits and tests. But if I feel I really need to, I will.

Thanks again. You are the greatest.

                              Re: Had a meltdown

Here is another tip I learned... one of our veggies are good for the thyroid... Foods that are helpful for the thyroid function are: carrots, spinach, apricots, asparagus, olive oil, & avocado.

Granted I am not saying that this should replace going to the Dr. by any means. There could be some real underlying issues. But maybe adding the asparagus as one of your veggies would help. Not to mention the spinach, olive oil & avocado. Just a thought.

Take care of your self Sunny.

                                Re: Had a meltdown

Hey Sunny -- I see you are going back to induction .... I wish you the best of luck with it. Stay away from Diet Rite, I know from experience that even 1 can can be heartache! Everytime I want one now, I drink another glass of water -- I've even put a slice of lemon or lime into my water to give it a little extra flavor (that's something I did while bartending - you get very dehydrated when you do that, and the lemon or lime seemed to help with the dehydration).

When I get hungry I eat radishes....I don't know why they satisfy me but they do..and they have so few carbs you can have a handful. 7 medium radishes have 1.1 carbs -- that is a lot of chewing and a lot of fullness for 1 carb! I also eat a lot of tuna salad and egg salad for lunch ... it's good on the flax crackers you told me about and good wrapped in lettuce also - but when I don't have a lot of time I just eat it on a spoon (or on a radish...lol) !

Good luck sweetie -- I hope this helps you and I also think Sherri's suggestion is a good one!! Is there a clinic close you could go to and have the thyroid test done?
