  • Eating disorders?

Now I know we are all struggling for the same cause, but I have a general question...

has anyone ever suffered from eating disorders? We're not simply talking anorexia... any kind of disordered eating?

To make things more comfortable I will open the conversation and say that I have been a serious restricter (we're talking 60cals per day consisting of lettuce and 10 cups of coffee daily), and I have also had many bulimic incidents...not just purging or attempting to, but chewing up food and spitting it out once I tasted it.

This is why atkins is so hard for me considering the calorie intake is astronomical. But I have done this before and it has been effective, so here I am again.

I had anorexia when I was a teen. I could go up to a week without eating. When I did eat, it junk food, so I thought I could eat whatever I wanted. Didn't realize that most days I only ate one meal...

I would have been bulimic if I could have gotten past the throwing up part. I'm still occasionally tempted, just too squeamish.

Looking back, I can see in my pictures that I was too thin, but part of me still wants to be that way again. I'm at a reasonably good weight now, and working really hard to accept it, but in the back of my mind, I still see myself as fat.

You can learn to deal with the thoughts, but don't expect them to ever go away.

        Re: Eating disorders?

I am currently recovering from bulimia. I was/am still kind of throwing up a couple of times a day but not as much as I used...I HAVE gained a bit of weight. I am hoping to find that atkins really help me through this process.

            Re: Eating disorders?

While i'm technically not a teen anymore (20 last april weee)
I went through a lot of that as a teen. I was lucky enough *har har* to inherit my dads genes more than my moms, where tall and big is in. Growing up with my mom who's about 5'6", who's always been a stick and very athletic, and my brother whos over 6 feet and could eat anything he wanted and be a bean pole, it was hard not to compare myself to them and all my skinny friends. I played soccer religiously as a kid, but my diet was horrendous(my mom owned a store in the mall and I lived on junk food and cokes) while I was still a chubby kid, soccer really kept me from becoming obese as a child. My dads always been big and I got a lot of flack from him as a kid about being too big.
I was in a very downward spiral after high school. My parents divorced and I moved 5 hours away from my friends. Food was the only thing I could control. At 19 I was diagnosed (among other things) as bulemic. Its a terrible cycle that is terrible for you and really does a number on your body. For me if wasn't so much about losing weight as it was control, although I did go for periods of up to 4 or 5 days without eating. Then i'd binge, feel guilty, throw up, feel guilty, repeat. Finding a psychiatrist and getting the help you need is the first step toward getting better. On Atkins you discover you don't HAVE to feel guilty fueling your body with food. The weight comes off like a charm, you feel better, and you don't have to destroy your body. Most importantly you're healthier!
You have to get out of the calorie mindset, and yeah its hard.Calories aren't whats hurting you, its bad carbs from bad sources. I find being on this WOL I feel lighter, healthier, and more energized without feeling dazed from lack of food.

              Re: Eating disorders?

It stated out with me on 600-800 calories a day. There have been days when I doubt I ate over 100 calories. Then the two times I ate nothing for almost a week each. Then- geez, I can't believe I really did this- when since my body would automatically reject and vomit up the metformin whenever I took it, I would binge and take the damn thing. Luckily the most extreme phases of all this nonsense didn't last too long (of course the fact that even thinking about Met makes me gag now). I think the problems are still there, but as long as I have people to reassure me I'll be ok.

Have you told anyone? Some of the first signs that it's doing irreversible damage is spontaneous stomach aches and your teeth wearing down, two years is a while.

Anorexia, for the past 6 years, a few times I had a couple of months or say where I ate semi-healthy. I've been trying to recover since feb, so far so good, apart from I've gained more than I would have liked, so trying to keep the ed away by trying atkins, before I go crazy.

                      Re: Eating disorders?

This may be difficult when you have had an eating disorder, but do realize that when you are eating normally again, you will gain weight from building back your lost muscle and bone mass, not necessarily from gaining fat.

This is why eating within your calorie range is so important, as well as eating sufficient nutrients from veggies and proteins.

Hi, shesays, what does your doctor advise you to do?

I noticed your stats and with your current weight, your BMI is about 20.5 (normal weight range 18.5-25) and at your goal weight you'll have a BMI of 17, which is in the underweight range.

My weight tends to stablize around 8st, 112lbs. The doctor says this is fine for my height. I'm not planning on going back to my lower weights again. I'm actually at the heighest weight I've ever been now.

I'm just trying to get back to where my body natrually wants to be, I've had a few months of eating a lot of crap and drinking way too much alcohol.

I'm not stupid, I know my body and what is and is not right for it.

I didn't say you were stupid. As long as your doctor approves of your weight goal, that's all that matters from a health perspective.

BTW, the BMI (Body Mass Index) values I have quoted are based on calculating your height and weight---specifically with this formula weight (pounds) divided by height (inches) divided by height (inches) X 703--- and the "normal weight range" is the normal accepted values for adults.

I'm not sure how they do it in the UK, but in the US, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Practitioners and the American Medical Association use a different "standard" for ages 2 to 20. That's no typo, it is age 20 because these medical organizations recognize that crucial human growth and development continues through the late teens and into the 20s, so they don't count 18, 19, and 20 year olds as "adults", medically speaking.

But since your physician has given the okay for your goals, these scientific values are less of a concern for you.

(Editing to add) Since this thread is in the "Teen Section", any teen and parent reading this thread should know that in the US, they should be asking their physician to not only calculate their BMI, but also to plot their BMI on a BMI-for-Age-for-Sex chart to see if they are in the "normal" weight range for their age and sex. That will give you a far better estimate of your "normal" weight and body image for your age and sex, than the standard "adult" BMI ranges. The percent body fat values, you might read about here and in magazines, are not used for ages 0 to 20 because there are no standards for it and because body fat percentage changes dramatically during these years of growth and development.
