  • Help with parents!

hi everyone! I'm 5feet 6 inches tall, I weigh 165 pounds and i am over weight for my height. whats worse is that I'm only 15. I've been wanting to do atkins for a while now but i can't convince my parents to let me go on a diet. My mom is in denial of me being over weight and when ever i ask her about a diet or atkins, she replies with: "You don't need to go on a diet, and your not overweight". She has been on atkins previously, so why can't I? I don't see any problem with it, I'm just tired of being overweight. So can anyone help me on how I can convince her to let me try the atkins diet? I really need your help!

From what you posted, it's likely that you're over your ideal weight. However, I doubt you look like you have a problem. Plus, parents are sometimes in denial when it comes to their kids. Be glad your parents don't think you're too fat - my mother thinks I still need to lose another 10 lbs...

So, since you're not obese and your parents don't support you doing Induction, maybe you could pick up somewhere in OWL. If you're careful about not making a big deal out of it, they'll never even know. Cut out all sugar, first off, then quietly refuse things like bread and potatoes. You'll be eating nuts and vegetables and berries and possibly whole grains. Looks like a 'balanced diet' to anyone not in the know

It may take you a little longer to go that route, but it'll save you the hassle of fighting with your parents.

Have you read the book? If so are you willing to do your weight loss a little slower? if so cut your carbs back by elimintaing the unhealthy high carb foods you now eat like soda, candy white bread, cookies, desserts and those kind of things eat the healthy veggies and fruits listed in the book. Increase your water consupmtion too and "back" into Atkins starting at the maintenance phase. As your parents see your healtheir eating habits they will be impressed. Then you simple lower the amount of higher glycemic carb foods you are consuming and your weight loss will continue. When you reach goal you will be a happier healthier smaller version of you.
Are you currently exercising? that is an important part of Atkins WOL too.

The reason why I need my parents permission is because there really is never anything healthy or low carb in the house, so it's not like i can do it on my own without my parents help. I want to go on the atkins diet because I want to be healthy and i want to be fit and be able to go to beaches and parks and have fun like any normal teen wants to do.

        My BMI is 26.6

        BMI Weight Status
        Below 18.5 Underweight
        18.5 – 24.9 Normal
        25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
        30.0 and Above Obese

I'm not just saying that because I'm not my ideal weight, I just think that it's unhealthy for me to stay the way that i am and also it's bad for my self-esteem and confidence. I want to diet because nothing else is happening besides me gaining more weight. I want to be able to go to the beach and take my shirt off without worrying about other people looking at me, I want to be able to wear fitted shirts shirts instead of baggy t-shirts that hide my weight. I don't want to spend all my teen years being overweight, and not being able to do things that i want to do.

Is there any way for me to get my parents to understand this?

ps. As for excersize, I lift free weights and do lots of pushups, they don't help much besides my arms.

Atkins is a multiphase program. When you get close to your goal weight as you are just slightly overweight if you have a normal build and aren't heavily musclesd or an athlete which the BMI charts say they aren't accurate for those type of people. I used my body fat percent to determine my goal weight. BMI I'm just slightly overweight but bodyfat I'm at the bottom of the athlete range and below the healthy range. Based on body fat % I'd need to add 20 pounds of fat to get to the overweight range. What does your doctor say about your body?

go to the library and get the Atkins for life book out. get the list of the healthy veggies and fruits like I said and talk to your mother about eating healthier. Once she sees you are committing to a healthier means of eating you will be able to eat Atkins for the phase you need which isn't the induction phase more like the third phase called premaintenance. you will be altering the shape and make up of your body losing your fat stores and adding muscle weight. This will give you a smaller look and make you healthier too.

Good for you with the weight training but You need some aerobic exercise too. Talk a brisk walk will help burn fat for you too. If you are in good condition you could jog or swim too.

What does your doctor say about your body?
Actually, the doctor is how i was told that i was overweight. This was about 2 years ago and since then, i've grown taller and gained more weight. He just tells me that I should start doing some cardio and start eating healthier and become more active.
go to the library and get the Atkins for life book out.
My mom has "the atkins essentials" book from when she was on the atkins diet. (she didn't last very long) Maybe i can ask her for it.

I just can't figure out why she is so scared of me wanting to lose weight. I've been overweight for as long as i can remember but this is the first time i actually talked about it. I just find it kind of weird because i wanted to use the tredmill once for some cardio and she didn't want me to. My father finally convinced her that there is nothing wrong with me wanting to do some light jogging.

I want to talk to her today about a healthy diet, hopefully she'll realize that its not a bad thing and actually a good thing.

it sounds to me..maybe your mom is a bit jealous..if she sees her daughter skinny...and maybe just maybe your mom will feel ashame about herself....since couldn't suceed in the atkins diet but you did...the reason i'am saying this..because it is weird that a mother doesn't let their daughter use the treadmill that is out of the ordinary..does she let you do sports or any other cardo activities/

She encourages me to play sports but whenever i mention anything about a diet or eating more healthy, she freaks out says that its not healthy for me to diet because I'm only 15. Even if I just mention eating healthier, she says no or that she doesn't want to talk about it.

P.S. :confused Sorry, if i gave the impression of something else, but i'm a male. lol :yes

I believe your mom is concerned that if you go on a DIET or get into a program to lose weight, that you'll go overboard. I have two daughters and whenever they felt that they needed to lose weight, they both would quit eating and become super thin. Its just in the past two years that both of them have averaged out and learned to eat healthier. Teenage girls sometimes go overboard and that is probably why your mom is insists that you don't diet.

I think you should include her into your healthy program. Advise her that the doctor told you you were overweight and you want to get healthy and get to the ideal weight for your body. I would show her the foods that you want to eat and ask if they can be incorporated into her grocery shopping. I don't know of any mother that would have a problem with buying their child chicken, tuna, salads and veggies to eat. Tell her that you want to exercise more and eat healthier. She should be happy for you that if you change your habits now at the age of 15, you won't go through what most of us have gone through with weight problems.

                  Good luck!!

DO NOT GET HER ESSINTIALS BOOK

You want to keep growing and to do that you need to keep eating right you want the Atkins for life book.

Your mother is concerned about you dieting because she wants you to deveolope to your full height plus your young body is still growing those organs too. The AFL book will not be a drastic change in calories which is what your mother fears. It will be a drastic change in the type of foods you eat. Check out the stickies in the OWL section listing the foods you add back to induction.
You should be eatting the healthy salad veggies, the low glycemic fruits and veggies legumes nuts seed and starchy veggies with the whole grains too. That will get you to be the healthier fellow you desire and she desires too along with reshaping your body the way you want. As I said you can back into Atkins and will be very surprised how well you do on it.
Adding the fatburning cardio will help you burn up some of your stored body fat too. Dr Atkins required exercise as part of his plan both cardio and resistance.

Get the food list and talk to mom about some salads and healither foods who knows she might back into Atkins too and lose the weight she wanted. if she had the AE ook it is no wonder she failed. Tell her after you get going on your Atkins Premantenance eating that y'all are doing Atkins she will be very surprised. Bet she didn't know later stage Atkins folk eat 6-8 cups of veggies a day. Atkins isn't all fats and meats or the bacon cheese burger diet as folk who only see it on TV think. If your mother is serious about it she should get the Dr Atkin's New Diet Revolution 3rd edition known as DANDR around here.

The best investment you can make in yourself right now would be to add the cardio asyour doctor advised and go checkout ot zerox the food lists from the AFL book anf then discuss that with your mother. If you are working out heavy with those weights and doing cardio you should beable to eat over 90 carbs a day and still lose weight. I was getting around 115 during my OWL days doing HIIT and BFL lifting with cardio.

Thats exactly what i plan to do! but, instead of my highschools weight room, i'm gonna work out with my father. I don't know how long it will take to get down to average weight, or become toned (muscular toned), but i promise to try my best to keep on going and to not give up! :yes

I thought you were already lifting from your earlier posts.

The increase in exercise will increase the rate at which you burn calories all day long so if you don't eat more food you will lose weight working out.
