  • I have seen the face of evil...

I have seen the face of evil and it is...*gasp*...BIRTHDAY CAKE!!! Today my co-workers celebrated one of my co-worker's birthday, and tomorrow we celebrate another one.

When I walked into the office and saw the beautiful white cake with sprinkles inside, I just walked right by it. The birthday boy offered me a piece, but of course, I politely declined, and didn't miss a beat joking with him. I didn't even have to leave the room to avoid the temptation. My co-worker who baked the cake (who is also a very close friend of mine), tried to coax me into tasting the cake (she has no idea I'm on Atkins because I've decided not to discuss my weight with ANYONE at work). Again, I declined. She pushed pretty hard, but I held my ground, as politely as I could.

Next obstacle is to get through HER party tomorrow (Thursday), which will be much bigger. I plan to take my lunch so I'm not tempted by any of the food there, but I'll be around the junk for a longer time. I wish I could avoid the party altogether because I work in a large department at a University, so I know most of the girls will bug me about why I'm not eating cake with my friends (which I normally would do). I don't want the conversation to turn to Atkins or my weight. I have absolutely no intention of eating anything I shouldn't. I just have to figure out how to quietly pass on the cake without inadvertantly becoming the center of attention. I could say "Oh, I'm stuffed!" But they all know better...LOL...remnants of the old me.

Cake is the worst. You did great today by passing on that cake. Good for you!

You can always tell them your Dr. said that cake is bad for you. It goes straight to your thighs. They may then look at that cake differently.

If the cake has tons of icing, you can say that you never liked all that sweet icing. It makes you sick.

You can say that you're planning a very yummy dinner and don't want to ruin it.

OR if they push it on you, you can say to please not do that. You don't want the cake. You're eating healthier now.

Not need to go into a discussion about your diet or weight.

Sometimes my husband asks me to taste something...

"It's just a little taste. You can spit it back out."

"No and stop your crap because you don't want me to blame YOU if I go off Atkins!"

You'll do great again tomorrow. Come back and tell us how you passed up more cake.

You can do it and pass up the cake! It will probably soon become obvious to your coworkers that you are declining for a reason and hopefully they will support you in your choices. The good news is as good as the cake looks, hopefully you wont be craving it!
bring some treats for you tomorrow or everyone, if thats the kind of party it is. Cheese and summer sausage for all!

One of my favorite lines is "I think I might be coming down with something, I don't think any of want to see what that looks like the second time around". I have several pre-planned comebacks to get me out of eating. I learned that the first time.

Or you could take some cheese and summer sausage in (add some fancy crackers to make it look good) and sing happy birthday with something on your plate.

            Congrats!

This is hard I know, especially when the cake looks tasty.

But isn't funny how after declining cake, it really isn't the big deal people make it out to be!

It's not like you are going to be ostracised (sp?) for the rest of the year as 'that person who doesn't eat cake'! :P

Re: I have seen the face of evil...

OK...I thought about saying I'll take a piece to my office, and then throwing it away when I get there (dont worry, I will not eat it...seriously, I don't even want it --which is kind of shocking...LOL).

I just don't want to talk about my weight or dieting. The problem is that a couple of my co-workers happen to also be really good friends of mine, so unfortunately, they might press a little harder into my business than the co-workers who I just work with. I don't want to raise any suspicions with them. Normally, I can't stop running my mouth, but for some reason, I have not had the desire to talk about what I'm doing to anyone. I just want to do it and let them SEE the results. I also don't want the food police all over my building at work. I hate that. LOL

put your hand on your stomach and wrinkle up your eyes when they offer cake. Then say no thank you when they push. Gets you out of any food you wish. The other idea is just I cant eat sugar anymore. I have to keep my levels even.

I don't really mind telling people I'm on atkins... although my coworkers always want me to taste something and I have to keep reminding them that I can't eat it! But I can understand because it feels weird telling people you are on a diet b/c of how heavy you are. I felt bad having to explain to my boyfriend's family how I was on this diet. But they are all very supportive of me!

You can do it! Say "hasta la vista " to that cake!

Just say your doctor has said no sugar, as going2bgood said. It's not really a fib, we are all our own doctors when all is said and done.

                        Well done for resisting.

I agree with Laurenfra about putting hand on your stomach and wrinkling up your eyes. And you could always just come outright and say, "No, thanks. My stomach is too upset." Of course, if they are like a lot of co-workers, they will insist you take one for later---which leaves you right back with you taking a piece back to your desk and having to dispose of it later.

Re: I have seen the face of evil...

LOL @ some of the responses. I've decided I'm just going to say, "Not right now, I'm full." And leave it as though I'll get it later, but I WON'T get it. I think that will be the easiest way to deal with them. If I didn't know them so well, it wouldn't be a big deal. I just know my one co-worker is going to be suspicious if I say I don't want any because I also passed today on the cake she baked for the other guy today. We all normally look forward to her bringing in her cakes and brownies and candies and mac n cheese and...LOL You get the point. We EAT in my office!!!

Before I deal with an onslaught of interest in how I'm losing weight (along with watching eyes), I'd just like to enjoy knowing that FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE I am doing something for me....I really want to know that I am doing Atkins because *I* want to do it, not because of some external pressure. Believe it or not, I'm starting to enjoy knowing that I will begin to shrink soon, and no one knows it. Hehehe...it's exciting. I'm just having a bit of fun with this all by myself right now (with the exception of you guys and my family), and I don't want to share it with anyone else.

Dumb? Maybe, but I don't care. It's just something I feel the need to do since I've failed so publicly in the past.

It's okay Tracey! Most of my family is very thin... I don't see them very often at all. They have no idea I'm on Atkins... They always think I am going to be the fat arse... Well I'll show them when I finally see them wearing my size 12 hip hugger jeans and a cute baby tee! They will be so amazed... So I can definetly say I understand where your coming from with wanting to give them a little bit of a shock!
