Re: had to undergo a gastric bypass to reduce his body fat

My best friend is going through all the classes for gastric bypass surgery. She is 5'7'', 394 lbs.. I practically beg her every night to give Dr. Atkin's approach a try. Unfortunately, my plees fall on deaf ears. She sees what it's doing for me, but she has been brain washed by her doctors and nutritionists that gastric bypass is the only way to go for her. They also teach the food pyramid w/ grains as top priority as gospel. She had 3 boys, all through C-section, so she thinks that 'normal' diets won't work for her. She has a lot of fat right where she was cut. Anyway, we went to a buffet the other night and she was looking at my plate in shock. I had a bunless burger w/ mayo and a tomatoe slice, some unbreaded chicken, and a slice of roast beef along with a salad w/ ham, turkey, eggs, black olives, cheese, bacon and ranch dressing on it. "You can eat all that?" Yes!! That's the wonderfullness of this way of eatting, I told her. Even if I do go a bit over 20g of carbs, I feel full, I don't get voraciously hungry and I'm seeing my body shrink almost daily. I looked at her plate.. everything was breaded.. No veggies.. unless you count corn fritters. I told her that the only thing I could eat that was on her plate was the cheese sauce she had on her mashed taters. She gets frustrated and tells me that she doesn't know what's good and what's not. Everything with her is another excuse. I told her that if she would have started Atkins 6 months ago when she started her classes on the gastric bypass, she probably would have been through 75% of her weight loss goal. She just turns her nose up. "I CAN'T GIVE UP BREAD!" No, I think to myself, you WON'T give up bread.. I realize that I wasn't addicted to the bread, I was addicted to the 'full' feeling it gave me.

Well if she has the gastric bypass surgery, she WILL have to give up bread! No more chowing down on meals like that breaded one!

This is what concerns me when these people say, OH I've tried everything and it didn't work!

Well sweatheart, so did the rest of us when we tried everything, what you really need to do is commit fully (mind and soul) to a program.

This goes for any weight loss program.

I know everyone in the low carb and diet world preaches: Low Carb and Atkins is not for everyone,

but to quote Lisa Simpson: "Just because you say something, doesn't make it true".

I have yet to see another human being soo biologically different, that true sticking Atkins won't work for them.

We are all human, and the science of it all applies. (Except for people with legitamite medical conditions)

It's not that it doesn't work for everyone, it's just that not everyone will have the will and determination to do it!

Re: had to undergo a gastric bypass to reduce his body fat

Anyone considering gastric bypass should watch some of the shows on Discovery Heatlh. They've had a couple stories of people getting gastric bypass, and a few of them had some major complications, including difficulty with wound healing and infection because their bodies would have problems absorbing enough nutrients properly.

Imagine not being able to have surgery for excess skin removal from rapid weight loss because your body isn't healthy enough for surgery? Or to fight off illnesses or other health conditions?

        No thanks.

I'm sure this isn't the case for all surgery cases, but it sound scary that it could happen.

Thank Goodness Dr. Atkins developed a weight loss program that can work for people who are severely obese. Many here are proof of that.
        Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
        STAC Restart: 1/05/09
        306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

        Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
        Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

        Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
        Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
        Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!
