  • Echinacea

About ten days ago, my throat started to tickle, in a bad way. You know when you just know you're in for a killer sore throat and everything that goes with it. Well I didn't have the time or energy to get sick, and decided to fight it with true and tested Echinacea. I took 2 x 500mg Echinacea capsules 3 times per day for 9 days as well as lotsa vit c. So this would have started around the end of week 1 of induction. Anyone know if the Echinacea could have curbed weight loss.

The important thing to me is that I did NOT get sick, I fought off this flu and stopped taking the Echinacea yesterday. I'll keep the vit c going for another week though.

    Any thoughts.......

on another note that's similar - don't use zycam. Our pharmacist said it can destroy your taste buds. Go figure - I think I'd rather be sick and drop a few pounds. HAHA

This is a site with details of echinacea. I cannot see any reason why it would stall you - should only do you good.

Thanx Odille, that was an awesome website. Like you said, it may have only helped.

And I am living proof, it stopped my sore throat before it turned into a full blown flu/cold.

I was glad I read this, Nicky. I got the flu-like symptoms last Monday, and had a week of fighting it off, but I too took echinacea, and I am going to keep taking some every day. It really helped.

Interesting about the Zycam. I used this last time I felt like I was coming down with a cold and it helped. Now I think I need to throw the rest of it away. Scary!

I will try the echinacia next time.

                    Re: Echinacea

In the vitanutrients Dr. Atkins recommends echinacea, it strengths the inmunitary system in many ways. In can be very usefull in upper respiratory illness and in vaginal infections. Helps you get well faster. The best form is dehydrated echinaccea powder (dust?). For cold, flu, take 6 to 8 capsules each day. Just to prevent the illnes 760-1040mg.

I think echinace has nothing to do with weight loss, that is good you feel better now.

(sorry for my English, hope is understandable)

Nicky any time your immune system is actively fighting off an infection it can effect weight loss.

And for those thinking about the echinacea remmember it is a plant ( coneflower is the common name) and you can be allergic to it just as you can any other plant extract so be careful if you use it.

I was surprised when I found this web site that echinacea was good for so many things, such as being a general blood cleanser. I had ponly heard of it's se when your felt a sniffle coming on. As 2big said, watch for allergies, but I think otherwise, herbal is always better for you systemically than manufactured drugs.

That is exactly why I was so impressed with it, being a herbal remedy. A friend did warn me not to take it for extended periods of time, since it enhances your immune system, you don't want your natural immune system to get too lazy, therefor only use it when you're feeling icky to help the body along in a natural way.

Hubby and I have been taking 2500 mg doses of echinacea twice a day as we are going on a tropical vacation in a few weeks and always seem to get colds on the plane. Don't know why. Normally we only take it if we feel something coming on. I am a herbal skeptic at the best of times, but i have to admit that echinacea has staved off a cold more times for us that we can count. It either nips it in the bud before it even gets hold, or if the cold is already a couple days in, it shortens the cold from a week or 2 to 2 to 3 days. Nothing else works like this for us. Its incredible stuff. The one time we bought a lesser mg dose than the 2500, it didn't do the trick for us. Best to always keep a bottle in the house, first sign of the sniffles, start taking it.

Why the scepticism for herbals, may I ask? Most of our established drugs come from hrebal bases. Aspirin is simply artificial willowbark for instance. And they don't have the chemical fillers and crap that many prescription medicines have. I'll always take herbal if possible, and if it works.
