  • *pokes face in door* Hello!

    Hi Guys and Gals!
Okay, well I used to post on this board all the time in 2003. I was on with my gaming handle but because I used that name so often in the gaming community I did a search once on my name and it came up to here. (I was on as k*h*i*l*i*a*h. (I don't think the search engines can pick up that!)

I'm an anonymous person on gaming so I just didn't want anyone doing a search for me looking for game stats and seeing my stuff. I'm not sure if anyone here would even remember me, it was 5 years ago. So anyway, I'm back on the saddle again so to speak.

I should probably update things quick. In 2003, I was living in Iowa, things were not that great financially or with stability and we lost everything. I moved to Arizona with my husband 2 years ago and things are so different now, it's amazing.

Weight wise, ugh, not so much. Over the years up down, up down. I went off of Atkins in 2003 because I wasn't willing to give up my soda, never drank water and wasn't fond of the soda with splenda.

When I started on the boards I was at 255, dropped to 240. I had started at 290 though the loss of the first 35 was more from starving myself than atkins.
Sat there watching my husband keep shredding off pounds and I was going nowhere and I blame that on two things, myself, and my soda.

I went off thinking I would go on low cal/low fat starve myself... I couldn't do it anymore, broke down and gave up. I was eating very poorly, pizza constantly, eating fast food breakfasts everyday followed by candy bars before lunch, fast food for lunch, something in the afternoon and pig out on more pizza at night. That was 2003-2005.

I moved to Arizona in January of 2006, 2 months later I bought a scale and big shocker for me, I was at 307 pounds.
I starved myself and dropped to 225 in 6 months. I fell flat on my ***, shot back up to 265 which is my current weight. For the last 5 months, I've continued to keep telling myself "All I have to do is eat low cal/low fat and keep it around 1200 calories and I'll be thin by summer..." I'd make it on the extreme for 3 days and then crash and I'm the same weight as I was 5 months ago.

Last night, I had a thought. I can either keep falling to pieces, or I can give up my diet mountain dew, dedicate myself to drinking water with a little pepsi one with splenda in it if I need it (that hasn't changed has it? is splenda still okay?) and go back to being able to eat 3 times a day without yelling at myself and beating myself up internally for being a failure and still lose weight. If I stick to it and average the healthy weight loss drop, I'll be to a manageable weight in a year, if I just stick with it and don't cheat.

I informed my husband that I'm ready to go back to it and he was so happy it's not even funny. First thing he said? "You need to go find that bulletin board with those people who were really helpful..." Yup, that would be you guys. So here I am.

As for goals besides weight loss, I'm back in school, and I fell in love with Geology and re-started my major.

In April, we have a trip to the Grand Canyon for one of my geology classes. One of the professors who is leading this one knows me from the geo-trip we took to Trona and knows I am very over weight. He said it politely but his words were:
"This trip is much more physical than most of our other field classes. The class is essentially taught on the trail, so students need to be aware of the physical requirements involved so they can participate. For Spring 2008, we are hiking the Grandview trail out to the end of Horseshoe Mesa, a highly strenuous day-hike (6-7 miles, 2,600 feet vertical)."...

I knew what he was saying..... "Are you sure you can handle this?"...

    Yes, I think I can.

I have a set of goals I want to accomplish:
    • No Cheating
    • Daily water intake will be met
    • Decrease in caffeine signifigantly
    • work out on my bow flex 3 times a week on the days I don't have classes (Mon-Wed-Fri I can work out on it) walk on off-days.
    • lose as much as I can without starving
    • required to eat 3 times a day. No Skipping Meals anymore.
    • Be able to handle this Grand Canyon Trip without killing myself.
I will be on induction until the trip. I don't know how much I'll lose by April 24th, but it'll be worth it to see what happens over the next 12 weeks.

So, that's it in a nutshell!
    Liz

Hey Geo...I was here in 2004 and lost around 50lbs...I lost about 20 lbs. before I came back this time...I was "watching" my carb intake and slowly beginning to regress...now I have decided this has to be a wol for me or I might as well throw in the towel...Well I'm not throwing in the towel...I am changing my life...

This board was critical to me before and I got off...days I think I won't check in...I make myself so I remain accountable. I must be accountable.

There are some great people on here...some of them have made it, some are on there way and some are just starting out but everyone on here no matter where they are in the process understands where you are.

I'm glad you're here geo and look forward to the journey together!

Re: *pokes face in door* Hello!

        Welcome Back !

Congratulations on taking your first steps to improving your health !! The folks on this board are great and there is soo much information and support. I"m still new here but I find it helps me get through the day and also stay on track. It makes me less likely to cheat because I want to keep talking with everone about how things are going !!

I'd say get on induction for the 14 days and then consider the next steps called Ongoing Weight Loss Rung 1 which adds some carbs, any additional carbs added are just Salad and allowed veggies. Those are not bad and won't stopt the weight loss. In fact they will provide fiber, nutrients and vitamins that you need. If you think about it could you get fat if you stuffed your face with Spinache ? Probably not. The point is to make whatever carbs you add have nutritional and health value. Try not to waste your 20g of carbs on artificial sweetners it's much better spent on some Spinache or Broccoli which will keep you healthy and regular

I love sweets, sugar, caffiene so I know what your going through. I am on my 5th week now and the sweet attacks are just barely starting to subside. The 3rd week I was having fits for sweets and its pretty hard.

Splenda is still OK but remember that it = 1g of carb per serving so try to get off needing the sweet taste. I am like you I always want to drink soda or tea or something sweet. Growing up I never wanted to drink just water. I can tell you that until I was about 28 I never intentionally drank water, it was a last resort for thirst I always drank juice, tea, milk, soda anything but water i hated water.

Now the only thing I drink is water ha !!! So it can be done.

We are all in the same boat, have alot of the same goals. You will lose weight between now and April but I hope you will consider maintaining the life style beyond!

We will all be here cheering you on !!

thanks for the welcome and I really look forward to getting to know everyone who's been around but came after I left, and to any of the old faces!!!
I don't think making this a WOL will be an issue. My husband is on perma-atkins just from the way he grew up. He's always hated all my pasta crap so I'll just always grocery shop with "What does he want?" and be fine! (hee hee.) Again, that's part of the reason he's so happy I'm getting back on the boat. He gains from eating my stuff and he hasn't been happy so this is a good thing for the both of us.

Re: *pokes face in door* Hello!

            Geogirl, welcome!

You've got some of the right things set, goals and drive.

I'd recommend you make a menu and stick to it, and try to get some snacking in your menu so you're eating 5 times daily, it helps boost the metabolism. Adding some cardio in there would be good too

As far as the diet sodas go, I'd really recommend you consider dropping them altogether. There's 2 reasons for that, one is medicinal, and the other anecdotal. From a medicinal standpoint, I've read some research recently talking about how people will still have insulin spikes from drinking diet sodas, the soda tastes so sweet to them that the body doesn't realize it's not sugar and start the carb portion of the kreb cycle (potentially knocking you out of ketosis. I theorize that this may be one of the reasons diet sodas can stall people).

The anecdotal part is just my personal experience, but I can tell you this... Products in general for me just wound up being a gateway to being back where I was before, especially diet soda. I'd get cravings for foods I was used to eating when I was having that diet coke. Cutting soda out completely was hard during the last couple of weeks for me, but I feel so much better now about it, and I've had almost no cravings, and I think it's got a lot to do with diet soda consumption for me.

Good luck! We're here for you and each other!

Re: *pokes face in door* Hello!

Yeah, that's why I said the Pepsi One is for, to get over the caffiene. I don't like it much, but I cannot go from the 24 pack of diet mountain dew a day, down to just water. Yes, you read that right, a 24 pack of soda a day.
I've tried to just drop it and go straight to water, but it makes me physically sick. So since I'm not fond of the taste of Pepsi One, I drink it way slower and I will be making sure I do my target water each day (2-3 two liters of water, 64-96oz) which will be the bulk of the day and I'll just keep paring down the intake until it's fairly non-existant.

I wanted to ask about snacking, I've done that a bit today, but how much is too much snacking? What would be a good "Snack Size" of something. Little snacks, like eating a piece of beef jerkey or something tends to make me crave more. I could definitly use some advice on portion control.

Re: *pokes face in door* Hello!

If you're hungry, eat, this isn't a WOE that's about restriction. You're going to want to eat a lot more your first couple of weeks until the appetite suppressing and stomach shrinking comes in.

And believe me, I know what you mean about soda. I drank just about what you did soda wise and quitting cold turkey was a ***** for the first 3 days, after that, meh. I don't even miss it now.

You have to do what's best for you however.

During induction I ate whenever I was hungry, and I ate a LOT. I was at 2800-3000 calories during that first week, I wasn't going to limit myself. Second week I find I'm down in the 2000 calorie range just doing the same thing. If I'm hungry I eat, that's my only guideline.

I agree they are both gross. I do drink mostly water now, but I have found that Waist Watchers sells 0 Carb diet soda (it uses splenda). They make, cola, orange, root beer, citrus frost and ginger ale. I like the Citrus frost and ginger ale the most. Where I live they sell it @ Hannafords and Shaw's (2 of the larger grocery store chains in the area). I also stil count a can as 1g of carb b/c of the Splenda and really limit myself to one day if I have one.

Welcome back to the ADBB Geo and to the Century Club! You seem to have a great attitude and determination to make this work for you. As far as snacking eat until you feel satisfied. Like someone mentioned earlier, you may eat alot to start with but you will start to learn your signals for being full and the appetite suppression will definitely kick in soon. Make sure you are getting plenty of veggies. The majority of your 20 carbs during induction should come from veggies. It's great that you have a supportive husband that won't mind eating the same foods as you. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you around the board.
