  • today my doctor scolded me

yeah. not even my MD, my obgyn. wtf. i feel so confused and lost. i have been having some ovarian cysts that needed treatment and she was asking me questions about my eating habits (prob because i was dehydrated when i went to the ER from the fever! DUH) and thats when i told her i was on atkins, and man, did she give her two cents!!! she pretty much has me scared to death about being on this diet, and she said from a medical standpoint the only diet doctors recommend is weight watchers. ugh.
i feel like such a loser.

Wow, well some doctors don't know much. I don't see how they can scold you and tell you its all wrong when most of them are so uneducated about low carb. I went in after 10 wks of being on the program...my cholesterol and tryglicerides dropped dramatically. I have a chart of my old and new numbers in my albums. Most people who are not even doing low carb dont even eat half the veggies I eat on this program. My blood pressure is going down and I feel awesome. How can this plan be wrong?

They are coming from the perspective of the tabloids' version of Atkins. Ask if she's read the book. I have been on Atkins with more or less consistency for 2 years. My cholesterol is 149 and my bp is 122/70. Atkins does not make you unhealthy. How can a diet that is mostly composed of veg, with reasonable amounts of meat/dairy/whole grains be unhealthy?

My cholesterol dropped 30 points, good cholesterol went up 5 points, my skin, hair and nails are lovely, and I feel like a million bucks.

Protein, vegetables, good fats and water are bad for you SINCE WHEN? I think I would ask my doctor! I would take it as a challenge. Be the 'poster girl' for Atkins, work it clean and thoroughly, and show your obgyn where her education is lacking.

AND YOU ARE A LOSER! in a GOOD way! Congrats on the 16 pounds!

Re: today my doctor scolded me

thanks for all the support. its really hard because it wasnt like some doctor that is in a clinic, this is a doctor that works for one of the best hospitals in the nation, a hospital that i chose to drive an hour to just to get treatment, and its a known fact that people come from all over the world to go and work at this hospital because it is so prestigious. my fiance even asked her how could it be so bad if it is working, and her response was that it is depriving my body of certain nutrients and in the long run isnt worth all the risks. im just so scared to continue this diet, but i cant afford weight watchers (im in college, so im broke as a joke lol) and i have had success on this diet and i told her like the things that make me stall (took me 2 weeks before i realized it was crystal light.. doh!) and she was like yeah you can have all those things on weight watchers blah blah blah (i know the hospital doesnt get kickbacks from them, i swear, it was just like her and her nurse were all about weight watchers and she said thats an entire doctor standpoint)..

i feel so confused, she filled me with doubt, and the worst part of it is that now my fiance (who lost 30 lbs) wants to see what weight watchers is about, or just say screw dieting all together!

Hmmm....maybe the medical community needs to get together and decide. My DH's endocrinologist told him to go low carb for pre-diabetes.

You could always ask her to direct you toward some factual data regarding all the Atkin's followers who have died of malnutrition... had their kidneys shut down... suffered clogged arteries.... etc... etc... etc....

Chances are you will find that she has no data and is just parroting the "party line" when it comes to diet and nutrition.

Oh... and "I heard it from someone who knew somebody that read about another person who exploded into a million bits while eating a steak" does not count as "factual data".

Thre funny thing is... when you really look at this diet, the only thing missing is flour, sugar, and starches.

Since when does not eating a potato mean your life is in danger?

Re: today my doctor scolded me

Ask yourself, is the diet working for you? do you feel great doing the diet? is being fat making you feel good? That's all you need to worry about...

Of course you need to take supplements on the diet... but that's right in the book.

Long term risks? Has she heard of obesity and diabetes?

Negative doctors who aren't nutritionists and deal with these things every day really piss me off.

Yes Atkins is bad (if you do it wrong!) If more people would read the book and do the diet correctly and get the results they are supposed to get the word would get out... But there is so much mis-information out there that for now anyway, the name 'Atkins' is verboten.

I say... 'I'm on a low carb diet, I've lost 20 lbs, and I'm feeling great!'... that usually shuts em up...

and ob/gyn isn't a nutritionist, and probably knows about as much about atkins as what she's heard from a friend of a friend of a friend who did it wrong. did you say 'hey i'm eating 3 cups of veggies a day, and not eating sugar. you magical little weight watchers would let me eat gummy bears and marsh mellows all day since theres no fat in them. explain that!" cause i would have!

Don't take this the wrong way but if you did the research and deemed it safe for you to start (and lose 16lb)..then why are you letting someone, top doctor or not talk you out of it. UNLESS you really can't be bothered anymore and are looking for a way out. This is just be another excuse. Please don't think I'm being rude, but I let this "oh, maybe I should try another" thing stop me before and to me you're looking for a way to justify stopping. Whether your fiance wants to do atkins or not, you should not let the stop you.

sorry.. well no not really but i did take it the wrong way. nothing like asking for support and being told im just looking for a way out. considering the fact that i am in dire need of surgery i took what my doctor said and held it on a high pedestal. doesnt mean i cheated when i could, and i do induction to the t. im not justifying stopping because.. i havent stopped! UPMC doctors are regarded as the best in the nation and some of them are the best in the world. for the average person that is going through what i am going through and to have a medical profession in a highly regarded setting scare them would think twice two.. unless they were brainwashed or a complete idiot or something!

Funny how Weight Watchers keeps coming up. I did it for 3 years, it works for some, it did not work for me. I felt deprived, I did not cut out my half and half for my coffee, so I felt guilty, I was stalled for a year! This diet works for me. I never feel deprived, I actually switched to heavy cream in my coffee instead of the 1/2&1/2. But I get the same reaction. Oh my god, that's so bad for you, blah, blah, blah. I feel better now, I'm losing now, I eat more vegies than my WW friends. I'm not always trying to find a low cal WW substitute for the cookies and bread I used to eat, like everyone on WW's does. I don't cheat anymore, HA! There have been fancy cupcakes hanging around my house since yesterday, I have not had even a taste of one. I have no desire to. Like Mommy2many1 said, eat clean and be a great example. So far you've done wonderfully well and I'm proud of you! You go girl!!

Many doctors are uneducated about nutrition. Sad, but true. My doctor actually took the time over the period I began Atkins because he saw it working both in weight loss and health indicators. He still asks me questions and agrees it is the best thing I ever did with continuing results.

No more insulin ... no more blood pressure medications ... lipids are all within normal limits ... and happy to have a non-dictorial physician who will engage in discussion and listen.
