  • Thailand here!!

Hi Everyone! I'm back on Atkins, finished my first day of induction yesterday! Last time I did the diet was was living in the States about 3 years ago. Now I'm in Thailand and the land of rice and noodle is presenting some challenges, but I think I'll be okay. No restaurants carry chicken or eggs here. You can find eggs or chicken in the market and I'm eating them, so hopefully I don't die from bird-flu. They say it's safe to eat chicken, just don't play with them, but you never know...

The upside is everyone is minature and all the clothes are miniature and really nice, so I'd love to be able to fit into them and go shopping, shopping, shopping!

Also working up to a holiday in India for my 30th birthday in June. Would be nice to have some pics that are not shot from just the neck up!!

I think if someone were to ask me what my favorite ethnic meals were I would say Thai. I love it and I would have a real hard time staying on Atkins if I lived there. Saying that, I also love Japanese food and I do alright. So is there a low carb version of Satay...

You have no idea how hard it is! Noodles and rice are staples here. You look like a bizarre freak if you order food and tell them you don't want rice. It's actually kind of gluttonous to eat just the dishes alone, as rice is cheap and is meant to make your meal bigger. Thai food is much healthier though, and I probably wouldn't be fat if I had grown up on it. It's spicy, so you eat less, and is fresh most of the time, not a lot of canned, processed or frozen ingredients. With the introduction of American fast food in the past 20 years, we have McD's, KFC, Dunkin' Donuts, etc., you start to see a lot of fat Thai teenagers now. So it's probably not just genetics that makes them small. They eat very little though, and several times a day. And their idea of sweets is a bowl of kidney beans in coconut milk and ice, and a lot of other things I don't find tasty. There's so many wonderful, lovely, sweet, succulent, exotic fruits here, that's the hardest part of this!!! Eventually I hope to get down to goal and incorporate myself into society, able to eat like the Thais and stay lean, but for now, no noodles, no rice. :yikes

Oh, and satay is just grilled chicken with curry powder, so it should be okay. It's the peanut sauce that gets tougher, but I imagine if you experiment enough you can get one with low carbs tasting okay. I had fish satay the other day at a restaurant. I'm sure there were carbs in the sauce, but I used a very tiny bit of it and am okay.

Hi everyone, I'm Thai but i've been living in melbourne for five months. I gained almost 20 pounds, yes 20 pound !!! I was skinny when i was in Bangkok. Now I have to try hard to decrease my weight. However, i can give some food list that you can have in Thailand.

You can have pork / chick / beef satay (without dressing / sauce), grilled chicken, Thai salad (yum), deep fried pork / fish / beef / chicken, seafood etc... Most Thai food doesn't have sugar. And they are really cheap and delicious.

And you don't have to eat rice or noodle if you don't want to. In thai culture, it doesn't mean that you're not polite... So good luck ..

hi! well it's so good to hear other people are lo-carbing in thailand. it has been very hard but i have lost almost 30 pounds now. it is hard with farang genetics! thai food minus the rice and noodles is very healthy though. there's just so much invasion of farang foods here, all the fast-food and cake shops and coffee shops, that you have to be strong. it's good motivation though that all the clothes are so small so if you want to shop, you must lose! :wave

                Hi Thaioneon,

:joy congrat on your 30 pounds lost :joy :joy

I also think it is very difficult to LC here in Thailand. I think that they add sugar into almost every dishes i.e. stir-fried, curries etc. Also there is hidden carb in oyster sauce that they always use in stir-fried veggies. Can u recommend what you normally eat when you eat out?

Also is there any LC products available in Thailand? I have very little hope for this. I managed to stock up quite a few when i came to US last time...but i do not know what to do when i run out of those LC supplies.

                Any advice???

hi! you know i am not much good for advice because i have been losing veerrryyy slowly and am made my own modifications to the diet to suit myself. i started many months ago and have only lost 28, and i think it is because there are so many hidden carbs in thai food (i agree there is sugar in a lot of the sauces) and i am not really gung-ho beligerent about this because i still want to have a fairly relaxed life here and i do not like to cook so i eat out a lot since it's economical as well.

first of all it's probably important to say that i used to eat A LOT of carbs. i had desserts several times a day, pizza, lots of farang food and pasta, anything and everything i wanted, even when i was not hungry so even just cutting back on sugar a little has an impact on me.

i did the induction the right way, with lots of grilled meat and eggs and bacon and very few veggies and no fruit. that was the hardest. now i enjoy to eat a lot of vegetables, even though i lose slowly. and i do eat some fruit, because there are so many good fruits here and they keep me from cheating with cakes and cookies. i never eat rice or noodles or bread either.

i like to eat tom yum with mushrooms and chicken (but i am certain there is sugar in the water even though i don't drink it). i also eat puk boong fai dang (but it has oyster sauce) and a lot of moo satay without the sauce. a lot of steamed vegetables with butter. i like to eat a whole fish fried with garlic too. grilled chickens from the market are good too. some insects, chickkoong. S&P japanese pork steak and veggies. occasionally a burger without the bun, but you know the beef here is not so good. sometimes we have pizza and i eat just the toppings and the sausage and cheese from the stuffed crust.

i exercise at least 1 hour each day walking with weights and then stretching and situps, leg lifts, push ups, etc. - i had virtually no exercise before this.

i don't eat lo-carb products. i have a very good friend in the states who sent me some lo-carb bars but they just were not enjoyable. i'm fairly sure you can order them online and have them shipped here. i don't know of any shops that would have them, although i did see a GNC in the mall in BKK, don't know if they carry anything.

anyway, it's up to you how aggressively you want to pursue. i can still lose weight at this level, although it is slow now. i was more aggressive in the beginning, eating a lot at home, but my stomach was often irritated and i was not as happy. it is a lot more of a hassle to do atkins here as well as you can do it living in the states. i do think atkins is a great diet and if you can follow it well here, you will lose weight quickly. i just couldn't do it properly to suit my life, so i modified it for me.

                    Hi Thaioneon,

Thanks for your reply. I only want to lose 5-8 pounds so i kinda expect that it will be slow. And i am not fat at all...just want to be skinnier. Also wanna do this as WOL as i believe that it is good way to eat.

Iam not keen on those franken food..but i love baking and i want to make all those LC sweet treats. I wish i can have access to liquid splenda here in Thailand..i am more than willing to pay for the shipping cost but i do not think that it will get through the custom here. :sadblinky :no :no

                    Have a good day,

i saw splenda somewhere but i cannot remember where. was either carrefour, lotus or tops, not that that is very helpful. the baked treats do sound really good but i don't have an oven, like most thai houses. it's probably for the best though, i think i would eat too much if i made something. you don't have much weight to lose at all, have you tried increasing your exercise.

i haven't seen Splenda when i was i bangkok. You can check the ingredient in other brand products. Or you may go to the Department Store which they sell foreign products such as The Emporium ( Sukhumvit Road ), World Trade Center. For Atkins products, I have no idea where they sell it ( what about GNC ).

Good luck for you all and enjoy bangkok life

                              Hey,
I am on Atkins diet for 2 months already. It's hard to stick to diet in Thailand. I was looking on how to adopt Thai food to Atkins diet.
I usually cooking at home and take lunch with me to work.
I found something that may be can help you:
I use coconut milk instead of oyster souse for cooking. Coconut milk= 2 gr of carb per 100 gar!!!

Also I'm crazy about dairy products and it's hard to me to stay away from milk. I drink 2-4 table spoons of Coconut milk and fill better.

For snacks can use cheese, peanuts and oil fried pork skin (keb moo). It's only snacks I can find in Thai food so far.

When I have to eat out and have nothing with me I usually order gao lao and eat just meat or pork and vegie, no soup.
Also tastes good moo toon or kai toon. But in some shops they add sugar in the soup. But I was lucky and found some shops that do not add sugar.

If you have any other ideas on how to eat according to Atkins I will be very happy to know.

By the way, can you find keto sticks in pharmacy or anywhere. I tried to find, but in Chonburi are nobody knows about it. Checked Booth also, but had no luck. Where do you buy keto sticks?

                              Life is wonderful!!
