  • OH no not again!

Hi all: Ok the first week of induction I lost three pounds so that was great but I am now into my 5th day of the second week and not an oz has dropped off me also my measurments have not changed. This time around I decided to watch my calorie intake as well as my carbs because I know my BMR is lower than most. Also on thyroid medication. I am drinking at least 96oz of water a day, I have kept my carbs under 20 every day, I average 1000 cal a day. The weather in new york has been unbearably hot average temp 86degrees but humidity is almost the same. So you know its hard to do anything without sweating yourself to death lol. I have been refinishing kitchen cabinets and doing some yard work so not too worried about not getting any exercise. The reason I went off atkins the first time was because I lost 10lbs during induction and that was that! Could not lose another pound to save myself. Now I am reading that sometimes atkins does not work the second time around, what is that about. How can you not lose weight when your not ingesting carbs upon carbs? Help anyone, what else can I do to get the scale moving again.

    Re: OH no not again!

Tomorrow is the end of week four for me. As of today, I have lost exactly 6 lbs. I am working out 45 min of cardio a day and weight training. I am eating well under 20 carbs per day. My caloric intake is within 50 calories of my bmr. My fat is high, my protein levels good. I'm drinking enough water.

I measure every two weeks, but this week I checked my measurements and did not lose one single milimeter since the last time.

What I am coming to realize is that I am now a slow loser. Last time around, I lost pretty quickly and this time I am not. Yes, it's frustrating.

But I am not going to give up. Here's what I know for sure: I am in ketosis. I am going to lose weight. I feel fantastic. I have a ton of energy. My mood is optimistic and positive. I'm getting stronger and have more stamina each day.

Although I am concerned on one hand, I am absolutely certain that this is the right woe for me. Instead of obsessing about the poundage (and believe me, I check constantly since I gave in and looked at the scale the other day) I am focussing as much as I can on eating good food and working out and letting my body release the fat in its own good time.

You are not alone! Don't give up, please! We need to stick together and learn to adjust our expectations, celebrating the small successes. Hang in there!!!!!!!!

        Welcome aboard!

        Couple things you should consider:
Post a couple day's worth of menus and let people analyze them. It's really helpful.
Start some regular aerobic exercise. If you can build up some fat-burning muscle it may help start moving the scales. You can join the 6WEC to keep you honest...I know it did wonders for me.
Keep posting...we've found the more people post, the more they lose!

          Re: OH no not again!

1000 calories doesn't sound like enough to me. I find that I tend to lose more when I eat around 1400-1500 calories myself. Looking at fitday, it seems the days I eat 1200 calories I do'nt lose weight at all. It's pretty consistent too.

I need to lose 20 pounds total, and I've lost 5 so far. It will probably take me a few months to lose the rest but I think that that is the way that it should be so I"m not worried. If I stall that's okay, since I'm exercising and feeling better and really starting to be active again which is great.

            Re: OH no not again!

Just a note.... a BMR of a person who weighs 100 pounds would be 1260... so either you haven't figured out your BMR correctly or you weigh less than 100 pounds. The quickest (not exact) way to figure out BMR is multiply your current weight by 10 if you're female and 11 if you're male.... it's not exact, but it will give you a general amount. For an exact amount go to FitDay or search these boards for how to exactly calculate the number. Either way... 1000 cals is way way too low for anyone. Minimum of 1200 cals to avoid the body's natural starvation mode.

              Re: OH no not again!

Thank you for all your responses, well here it is day 13 and todays weight 130.8 I suppose I should not complain. Bmr is calculated not just by weight but age and height also so mine is around 1250. However in the book it says sometimes people have to reduce the calories on atkins as well as the carbs. Yesterday my diet consisted of . 3 cups of coffee, "dont tell me to give it up its not happening" 2 omega 3 eggs, 10oz steak broiled on gas grill, 1 cup of mixed salad greens, 10 chicken wings with hot sauce and butter baste. 1oz of cheddar cheese, and lots of water more than 96oz....oh yeah and celery sticks about 5.
I finally showed a trace amount of ketones on the ketostix. First time in two weeks. I am using the Fitday on line to track my foods and contents so that helps a lot. So should I stay on induction after day fourteen or should I extend the induction phase. The Fat Fast described in the book does not look too appealing to me.

                Re: OH no not again!

Not enough veggies, there, girl. You need 3 cups. 2 cups of leafy greens and 1 cup of the other kind, or 3 cups of salad greens. (I do 2 cups of raw spinach every day, then add zuchini or something)

                This may be the problem.

But the other thing may be that this is your second time around....it's happening to me.....just slower. Are you measuring inches?

I've lost 8 lbs in 4 weeks, compared to about 16 in 4 weeks last time. But I lost 16 inches in the first 2 weeks and probably half as much this last 2 weeks.

                  Re: OH no not again!

Here's a link to a sticky in the Induction forum. It may be helpful:

                  http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=5090

You just need to hang in there and stick it out. You may go through long periods of time with no loss. Your body just needs to adjust to the change.

I have gone through long periods of very slow loss (or no loss)...months of it! But I always end up losing in the long run. I just broke out of one of these phases recently. This is what I changed. I'm not sure what worked or if all of it together contributed:
                  1. No more diet sodas
                  2. Upped my exercise
                  3. No more evil nuts (that I shouldn't have been having on extended induction)
                  3. I moved on to OWL and am committed to doing OWL correctly.
                  4. I have started using fitday to keep an eye on my carbs, calories, and percentages.
                  5. I started a journal in the journal forum. I have found this very helpful to keep me on track, to set daily goals, and to report back if I met my daily goals.

Since I made these changes 2 weeks ago, I have lost 6 pounds.

Leah - I didnt see if you have listed your goal weight and height yet - this would help people in answering your concerns about slow losses.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                        Re: OH no not again!

upon agreeing with what everyone else has said, i would like to again say that yes, it is hard to not get eager, it is difficult when our bodies are not doing exactly what we want exactly when we want it. but you have to remember that your body is doing what comes natural. stop beating yourself up and thinking negative thoughts. your body picks up on those vibes. i am reading an excellent book, when women stop hating their bodies. it is making me rethink so many things. it says that women spend so much time hating their bodies instead of giving our bodies love, affection and appreciation. when we can learn to start loving everything about ourselves and accepting that it is okay to not be a size 2, then our bodies will want to please us as much as we want to please our bodies. this may sound like a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but it's not. it makes sense. the book says think of your body as a small child. now think about how much critisim you give your body, all the hateful things you think and may even say out loud. now imagine saying those same things to a small child.

what i am trying to get at is relax. enjoy being you and enjoy your body.. it's the only one you'll have for the rest of your life, fat or skinny. your body is going to do what you want it to, sometimes it just may need to hear some positive encouragement. if the scales aren't moving exactly when you want, relax. if the inches aren't going down, relax. it will happen. don't panic and start appreciating yourself no matter what size you are.

I often think that we could 'market' the Atkins Way of Eating as the 'fountain of youth woe' as everyone looks so much younger in their during and after pics!

hey thanks. you know that is what i think. i mean i am all about positive and negative energy and the effects. well i never once thought about all the negative thoughts i put on my body. it (the book) has really made me stop and think. half the time i was saying really hateful things to myself and didn't even think twice about it because it was so natural. i think every woman should read that book. i have always had bad body image and at least now i am aware and i do make more of an effort to not have those thoughts. to try and love my body even with all the dimples, flab and imperfections. you should check into getting that book. it's a good read.
