    Re: OK So You Cheated!

I just have been busy/sick and haven't been able to post. I've had 2 cheats in the past couple weeks - but I consider them necessary cheats. As a diabetic, if my blood sugar drops I need something to bring it up QUICK (and a piece of turkey just doesn't do it) so a couple times I've had to have a couple bites of something sugary and a glass of milk. Regardless, they haven't really affected my weight loss - I still dropped 2 lbs.

To err/cheat is human so everyone out there who's slipped - don't let it get you down. Just pick up and start again. All week I've been surrounded by various birthday cakes for my bf (one from my mom, one from his etc) and I wished I could have some (cake is the only thing I truly miss) and its taken all my willpower to avoid it...but I have and it feel great!

Good to hear from you, Cinders! I was wondering where you were!

I imagine that the diabetes does make things a bit more complicated. Are you eating every 2 hours or so? That should prevent a blood sugar drop to some extent.

        Re: OK So You Cheated!

I can admit to being a loser, but not the good kind. My downfall is frustration, and lapsing into the, nothing in life is giong the way I need it to anyways, nothing matters, why bother...SOOOO... I jump off the bandwagon, knowing Im gonna break something on impact and eat and eat and eat. The people causing this frustration are not people I can say anything about it to, so I think I eat to stuff the feelings by stuffing my face. Additionally, exercise is non-existant,,, by cricumstance. I cant go walking because with my boys along, I wouldnt get up enough speed to count, and it is also too hot to walk here unless it is night, and they are in bed. And asking my folks to watch them is okay with my mom, but my dad shoots me death looks, so I know to back off and retract my request. I AM drinking my water, and making good plans, for what that is worth. I do well for a stretch, and then fall away, and then get back on. Seeing so many lose weight so quickly by just eating according to the book and exercising makes me frustrated, because I know I could do it, Ihave done it, it does work... and it is hard to admit these periods, because 1. They are frequent. It is one thing to not know, and do what is dumb, and another to KNOW and KEEP doing it anyway, espec. knowing how CRUDDY it makes me feel 2. It makes me feel like a failure 3. I dont want someone else to see it and say, oh, it is okay to "take a break" and get back on plan.

My confession, signed, sealed and delivered.

          Re: OK So You Cheated!

No, I don't eat every 2 hours...99% of the time I am fine. Usually it happens overnight and there's not much I can do about. The body is a mystery and it reacts a million different ways...I can check my sugar before going to bed one night and take X amount of overnight insulin and wake up the next morning and check my sugar and it be fine. I can do the same the next night, take the exact same amount of insulin and wake up at 3 am with a low sugar attack. I just treat them as they come. The hardest part is not overeating when its low. The body sends signals to correct the low by making you insane-ly hungry/thirsty and alot of people will eat everything in the cupboard because your body doesn't register the effects of the food your eating for 10-15 minutes. So I'm very careful about that hence why i have just a couple of bites of something sugary to create a small spike and then some milk to stabilize it until my next meal. Milk is what they sometimes recommend you drink before a workout so you don't drop during exercise. Days I go to the gym - I usually eat some cheese an hour or so before.

Eating low carb has stabilized my sugars and for the most part radically lowered the amount of insulin I take - but I will never be insulin free. So I just do what I can and adhere the the WOE as much as I can. So far I've lost about 11 lbs and I can't complain.

And so ends your brief lesson in Type I diabetes lol

WomanbePraised - having small children really complicates the routine of exercise, etc. So does living with the folks temporarily!

I know that once you get a job and a place of your own, things will be more smooth for you. In the meantime, have you considered any of the following?

            1. Mall walks. You do not have to walk fast. Take the kids and walk in the mall for an hour. It's cool there, and often the malls have play areas for kids or little rides, etc.

            2. Do you belong to a church? Sometimes they have play groups for the kids which allows you to go do something like swim or walk (again, in the mall, for example) for an hour or so. You might also find an Atkins buddy there!

            3. Gyms with daycare. I know LA fitness provides free daycare, and they ahve pretty cheap membership deals. Tell them your situation and they'll give you a break, I'm sure!

            4. Bible study group or other support-type group to help you get away from the folks and some serenity. There's GOT to be something in your area!!!!

Hang in there. You are doing your best. This, too, shall pass!

                  *sneaking in*

Great thread, Ladies. It's wonderful to see some comrodery and support here...everyone needs it, no matter where they're at in life.

                  So, it's my turn...
Hi, my name is Lisa, and I'm a carboholic.....etc. etc...ugh! I feel like I've been saying that forever and a day.

As you can see by the date that I first joined the board back in April 2003...man it's been a long time. I've popped in and out over the course of the 2 years...not because I didn't like the board, only because I was like the progidal son (daughter) thinking I had found the riches beyond the mountain. Okay, so Idaho isn't really a big mountain, but it has it shares of *stuff* and I let it get to me.

Fast forward...I like it here. Ya'll are friendly, don't beat around the bush, and tell it like it is. So, here I am in Induction, for the ? Time around (lost count) and if you don't mind, I'd like to join in

                  Looking forward...
                  ~Lisa

You are welcome in this neck of the woods Lisa! Glad to have you join us!

So happy everyone is confessing. Its our first step to overcoming these addictions.

Finelly, I find that I am more likely to cheat: when I am stressed (work, sick baby - usually the biggest triggers). I also find that when we are short on money and things run out, I'll settle for whatever we have in the house. So, I definitely need to pre-plan better. Plus, its summer and we have had so many events at other people's homes (like a big engagement party this weekend, where the food is provided and seems to be a mexican food fest, my fave). I am proud of myself for sticking with the exercise, but everything else seems to fall to the waist side when this happens. Except that I force myself to come here and talk w/all of you. It also really helps to have my buddy (who is out of town right now ). Both of these things help keep me accountable. Plus, its motivating to see the success of other people.

Just to add to what Finelly posted, I find that the Walk Away the Pounds tapes are very good to get started with and may be helpful to you if you have a room with a television that you could go into and walk in place for a 1, 2 or 3 mile walk while the kids are coloring or something else.

Im not sure how old your children are or how active so Im not sure if this would work for you but wanted to throw the suggestion out there.

Cinders, you are doing all you can by the sound of it. My friends daughter is type I and she has a hard time keeping her blood sugar stable. Can be a challenge. You are losing so that is a good thing and proves you can do it!

Sarah - I can relate about the being short on money part. What I have been doing for those periods of time is head over to the dollar store - do you have those where you are? Everything's a dollar? I can get cans of black olives, tuna, a dozen eggs, even string cheese packages for a dollar each. I even got a bag of four avocados for a dollar the other day. I stock up on those sort of things (not to mention cleansers, etc) and keep them in the back of the pantry for when the "omg, payday isn't until NEXT week?" day comes.

                              Honestly? Me.

This board is one of my tools. So are the various challenges in which I am participating.

But by and large, it's me. My desire, my commitment, my consistent focus.

My husband is supportive of everything I do, but he doesn't comment on the woe, other than to let me know if I ask that I am looking good. My kids will tell me I look thinner if I ask (actually, both hubby and kids have volunteered that info at least once recently), but they aren't doing anything special. My friends know I'm on the woe and always have something legal for me to eat at their houses.

Those are, however, not major factors. I am the person who gets up in the morning and puts cream in my coffee instead of hot milk, who has committed to going to the gym and goes every day, who buys the appropriate food and cooks it. I'm the one who checks in on the board often and posts my thoughts and ideas. I don't seem to be relying on anything else, anyone else in a major way.

                                Good idea Star!

Having found this forum almost at its inception with the rest of you has made all the difference for me this time around. I am going to be hard pressed when I return to work in a few weeks. But for the summer I have been able to come here at will.

Also, I believe that I have finally got it. I remind myself daily when I am tempted or in a hurry what the consequences will be if I make the wrong choice. That is a road I dont want to go down again. I may not lose as quickly as the first time around but I am losing inches each time I measure and will be happy with that.

Not getting on the scale has helped too. I have been tempted to purchase another one but have decided its not important. My measurements and how I feel are a good enough barometer for me. No more struggles with why suddenly I may have gone up 3# and worrying when I dont seem to be losing quickly enough per Mr Scale.

There are many things I guess but these are the most important for me right now.
