  • Sweets- to do or not too do

Okay so I have been struggling big time since TOM last week- I gave into cravings and now they won't go away! I'm feeling a little hopeless at the moment, but not all hope is gone! What I am afraid of is tomorrow I go off to visit family and the last family visit during July 4th, I went hog wild on the carbs. By the time I fought those cravings, it took three weeks to lose the weight put on. I don't want that to happen again and will need your willpower vibes to be successful during this trip. My family are big sweets fans and I'm thinking about bringing one of those atkins friendly recipes along with me so I have something; however, I find that even these trigger my cravings. Should I just try to stear clear of sweets all together or plan a dessert for me? Just looking for a little advice and encouragement.

Kerry, falling off the wagon does cause set backs. I would highly encourage you to make some "legal" sweet treats to take with you so you won't feel left out.

I also strongly encourage you to get some L-Glutamine. They aren't very expensive. Take 2,000 mg a day. They kill the cravings for sweets! Start them today and you won't be that tempted to give in to your family's high carb buffet!

Although I recognize the philosophy behind ridding onesself of the sweet urge by absolutely avoiding anything sweet during Atkins, I myself have never gone along with it.

I read an interview with Dr. A once a loooong time ago in which he said that people with huge sweet tooths should allow themselves one splenda treat per day to deal with it. It works for me. This is in addition to my sweetened coffee. It does not stall me or slow me down. And once I get into ketosis, I'm fine with it.

So my recommendation is that you go with it. If the chances of cheating are huge, then by all means bring a recipe along.

THe supplements are also a good idea. They never worked for me, but then, I never really fought my sweet tooth. I just forced myself to do everything with Splenda!

Well, while I agree that you need to do whatever you can to stay on target with your goal, my concern would be that you are outright saying that even these legal treats bring on bad cravings for you. This could make it even harder to avoid the non-legal treats. If I were in your position and faced with 1. Either staying on track, no sweets, or 2. Eating legal sweet treats but facing bad cravings while out of my element, which could lead to a binge on the non-legals, I have to say, I would avoid sweets.

We know you can do this. Maybe take along some legal, but not sweet atkins-friendly things so that you are pre-planning and will have things on hand during a moment of weakness.

I know that is the dilema! But thanks for your responses- you've all given me something to think about.

Re: Sweets- to do or not too do

I would have a few high fat sweet options available, even if cheese and fruit or berries and cream (mix cream cheese with berries and splenda; half-frozen strawberries are great, the colder the better! -- only make a little, it's easy to overeat on) and also do like suggested and bring plenty of good foods for yourself, even if it means buying a cooler there and going shopping and doing some prep-work and cooking.

If you decide to have a sweet thing, follow up with a few bites of something not-sweet but yummy like steak or veggies. That helps a lot for me when I'm having a problem with stopping. Also be sure to keep the water bottle filled and drink it often!

As another reminder, go over your written goals and thoughts and look at your heavy photo and realize where you don't want to be. Checking out before and after photos of others can help get you through this too.

Good luck. You can do this!

Just think about what the word "treat" means.
If you use food as a "treat" or reward then you are setting yourself up for failure. Eating is just something you do to live. Food should not be used as a reward, celebration or pick-me-up. That will set you up for a lifetime of food-related issues.
Eat because you're hungry. And that's it.

              No treats.

Re: Sweets- to do or not too do

Ah, but food is also a source of enjoyment and a social activity. We have some of our fondest family memories involving food, do we not? Family gatherings rarely occur without food. Some of our closet, most intimate conversations occur when we are eating or having coffee or cocoa, etc. We celebrate events with food - that's what Thanksgiving Dinner is!

I can't buy that food is to be consumed only for the purpose of satisfying hunger. If that were the case, we should avoid all spices and flavorings.

I think that if we are to make this an actual WOE, then we need to learn how to substitute appropriate foods for the unhealthy ones. And that means that when the world is sitting down to cake and icecream, I'm sitting down to chocolate mousse made with splenda.

Re: Sweets- to do or not too do

You have points but if you have a huge hi-carb meal to celebrate life or eat a Ben & Jerry's when life sucks then you will not do well.
For me, if it's a special occasion, I just eat really good lo-carb food. Like a lobster. Not creme brulee. When you lose 10 lbs don't celebrate by eating a twinkie. Learn to reward yourself with something besides food for everyday life.

Watch TV some time and you'll see how the culture of food reward is constantly thrown at you. You've been conditioned to reward yourself with food every day. That's not they way life has to be.

Just because I don't answer the original question doesn't mean I don't have a point.

I just saw "big family eating celebration" and I just thought "don't equate celebration with food."

Re: Sweets- to do or not too do

                        Hi Kerry,
I know what you mean about cravings around TOM. This is the most challenging time for me too, but after several attempts at Atkins i think i fail because of those sweet cravings, so i decided to stay far away from sweetner and franken foods and this time i'm better than ever with this WOL. Definately bring Atkins friendly recipes just in case, but try to bring some cheese or meat snacks...high fat, high protein stuff.

This time around with TOM i increased my fat/ protein intake to accomdate sugar/carb/ chocolate cravings and i got through it and whooshed off 6lbs after TOM. Things w/ mayo like tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes w/ mayo based garlic dressing (homemade), cheese slices, and avacados, all put me a bit high on the protein side, but it didn't sabotage the whole Atkins for me. I really strongly reccommend that you stay away from the sugar substitutes for now
and get past it with focus on protein and fats. Then see how you cravings are after TOM...my guess is they'll be well on their way out of your system.

                        Good Luck!

Well, I feel like I should confess. I did bring a recipe and made the low-carb cheese cake which I ate but I also caved in and ate some not so friendly atkin foods. I am disappointed and disgusted in myself. Thank you for your posts and wishing you a healthy low carb day!
