What kind of steaks do people buy that are easy to cook and yet still taste good, but aren't ridiculously expensive like a NY Strip or T-Bone?

I always see cheaper cuts of meat in the store but I have no idea which ones would be edible if fried in a frying pan for a few minutes, you know? Some you have to marinate, some are all fatty, some are too chewy, etc...

So it's a poll, of sorts. What types of steaks do you buy and how do you cook them?

    Re: Steaks

Lately I have bought family packs of rib eyes and freeze them up in twos. I get the thin sliced ones because they cook up faster in a frying pan when I am in a hurry. And it is rare that I am not in a hurry.

Rib eye is a nice tender steak but takes more care not to ruin and is more moderately priced. I think its rib eye... suddenly I am having a moment and not sure. But I can tell you where they are in my butchers display window! lol must be time to eat... low blood sugar or something.....

MMMMMMMMMM...we had New York Strip (thank you moms freezer) last night... mmmmmmmmm

I like to buy London Broil. on sale. OR the ribs, that dont have any bones, but I can remember what they are called.

If you buy a roast (usually less per pound) , the butcher will usually cut it for you how you choose at no cost.

yea... ribeye is more expensive one but when I splurge it is always worth it. (And since DH is not a steak eater just one is all I need)

Ribeye is an excellent choice. I buy them whenever I find them on sale. I just grill them on the gas grill.

              FINELLY'S STEAK RECIPE:

Call DH over and tell him you think steak would be yummy for dinner.
Ask him to go to store and pick out some meat that is not too expensive but still good.
Welcome him back from the store with a passionate kiss.
              Ask him to marinate it.
Go to the other room while he prepares the marinade so you don't ever know what's in it.
Remind him to start the grill about 1 hour before dinner.
Remind him again 15 min later.
              Set the table.
Remember to put out steak knives.
              Prepare the veggies.
              Serve and eat.

                Re: Steaks

KK, I found that if you bash your meat it tenderises it and does wonders even to the cheapest cuts of meat.

I saw Jamie Oliver do it once. He took a really cheap cut (for us it's blade steak here), and hammered it with a meat mallet, or similar, till it's quite thin. Then he took some fresh rosemary & pounded it with some salt, you could add a clove of garlic and once that's minced, add some olive oil and marinate your meat in it.

Because you've tenderised your meat by bashing it so you break up a lot of the meat structure, it also means it doesn't take as long on the pan.

Try it - I've done it with beef, pork and even lamb. Chicken could work well and if you bash it thin enough, you can use it to make schnitzel.

Agreed, tickle. I always buy whatever's on sale and tenderize the heck out of it. I'm not fussy. I just love steak.

I always broil or grill steak.

Most meat if it's marinaded long enough will turn out great. I agree with tenderizing it too. I usually buy petite sirloin (3.99lb I think)...put some canola oil in a cast iron skillet...let it get hot (about a notch and a half above med) and cook the steak 4 mins a side then 3 mins a side. Sometimes I put steak butter on it (I have the recipe somewhere) and that gives it a great flavor.
