    Re: Steaks

I'm with you Fin, DH buys and cooks the steak. We do usually have Ribeyes. Lately he's been buying chuck steak (not my fav, but decent). He's a great cook so its never horrible. He seasons and lets sit in fridge over night. Then grills. On occasion, I will cook them on the George Foreman.

If you want cheap, petite sirloin is good marinated and grilled. I like to BBQ on charcoal and it always comes out tender for me. It is normally around $3.99 lb but I got a bunch on sale for $2.99 lb the other day and it doesn't have a whole lot of fat. I even reheat it in the microwave the next day and it is still tender. I think it is in how you marinate and cook the steaks. I like using some soy sauce, garlic and Splenda in my marinade.

I agree about the petite sirloins. Albertson's runs them on sale for $2.99/pound fairly often and I stock up. I use meat tenderizer and worcestershire sauce and they're usually quite good.

              Re: Steaks

For supper cheap, I usually get the "tip pan steaks," then marinate the heck outta them and fry them up with an onion. And ternderize, tenderize, tenderize!

                Yum!! Steak!!

I always found a tasty but inexpensive cut was blade, it wasn't the most tender but it always has a stack of flavour, again, bang the bejesus out of it and it comes up a treat.

I still like a cross-cut blade steak bbq-ed, but this seems to be more of an old fashioned cut and not that common any more.

I've recently found a local butcher that sells 200 day aged grain-fed sirloins. OMG! These are amazing. They end up costing around $10 per steak but these are the kind of steaks I'd happily pay (and have!) paid $35 for at a restaurant.

I also find the perfect way to cook a large sirloin is in a super hot pan, three minutes on each side and then rest on a plate for about 5-7 minutes. It sets the smoke alarm off each time but gee its good!

I am such a sucker for meat, I can not fight thousands of years of being a carnivore.

                    Re: Steaks

I go to a small local butcher and they have a steak that they say is the poor man's ribeye. It is called a Manhattan steak. It is half the price of the ribeye steaks. It is fattier and I think that is why it is cheaper. That just makes it taste better.
