I don't want to violate anyone's confidentiality but my own (lol) and please don't feel like you have to respond to this thread.

But I'm pretty open in the real world about being ACOA (an adult child of alcoholic) and I have a feeling there may be some other 12-steppers around here. Not that it is anyone's business, of course. But sometimes people need to pm others in a 12-step program and I'm always available.

I'm an adult child of an alcoholic, too! My Dad was alcoholic! I AM a SURVIVOR and after many years of hard work, I am thankful to be healed from all of damaged emotions that way of living caused me. Learning the Atkins WOE is like the final step in freeing me from a world of emotional eating related to my up-bringing!

        Thanks for sharing!

Hmmm Interesting thought many children of alcoholic parents grow up to be alcoholics. I wonder how many of us arent alcoholics but turned to food because of it?

Children of alcoholics either become addicts or marry them........

By the way, I wasn't intending this thread just to be for ACOA. I assume there are many members of Al-anon, AA, NA, OA, etc. around on the board, just like there are in real life!

                      Re: 12-steppers

I did grow up to marry an alcoholic and divorced. I went through 2 years of counseling and thank the Lord that I did. It taught me the tools that I needed to over come this. A lot of children do become alcoholics too or develope some other form of addiction. Some cases they grow up to be codependents with addictions of their own. I know I did. Eating became my addiction.

My parents were both alcoholics and as I researched my genealogy, I found a great great who committed suicide and another who I really believe was an alcoholic from what I am learning about him. I believe that I am 5th generation to suffer from alcoholism at least. Then I married an alcoholic, who has been sober since 1971, but my children didn't have a chance and daughter is the 6th generation.

My maternal great grandfather, my maternal grandfather - both alcoholics. My mom (crazy, but not a drunk) married an alcoholic (my father). I am not an alcoholic but probably have been addicted to work (that's over!) and food (under control, lol). And I didn't marry one, either. But......older daughter is a recovering alcoholic.

Paternal grandfather, all my uncles, my "father" -all alcoholics. I married an alcoholic/drug abuser the first time - smartened up the second time. I am not a chemically addictive person, but addictive in other areas? Oh yeah. Guilty as charged.

                            Yep. Quite a club.

LOL Finelly - that made me smile, even though its a sad head shaking smile. It really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Both grandfathers and all uncles (huge family here), father, all my brothers(one recovered), my only sister and ex husband and most of his family are all alcoholics. I got divorced because I wanted to break the chain for my children. It worked too. I raised my children by myself in an alcohol free home. They both have dabbled in drinking and both almost killed themselves doing it. I am pleased to say they don't care for drinking anymore.
Alcohol is such a destructive disease as we all know. The alcoholic doesn't just afflict him/herself, but those around them. My dad use to make fun of me when I was little about being over weight. I was the only one over wt in my whole family. His fav. song to sing to me was "Fat, Fat the River Rat". He use to rave about how pretty and slim my sister was. I took it to heart for so many years.
My dad and I have resolved these issues thankfully.
