  • weird. seriously.

so, i'm a runner. i'm able to run long distances.... and i can even do short distances quickly... whats weird is, the days that i do run... i gain weight.

    example...

say i wake up today and weigh myself. say i weigh 208 lbs. then, later that afternoon, i run 2 or 3 miles.

the next morning, i wake up and weigh myself.... 209.5 lbs.

so, just when you'd think i might have knocked a half pound off... i stuck 1.5 on.

do you run on a regular bases? if not your body because of our survival instincts thinks something is after you to make you run and stocks up supplies in the musclke tissues so that it can protect you cause something is after you. Lots of those supplies are fluids which as you know are heavy. Once your body learnes either this is the normal load for those muscles cause you do it regularly or you don't do it again for a few days it will release the fluids and those pounds will drop. The phenominom is called super hydrating.

do you run a regular distance and regular speed so your body is used to the load you give those muscles?

          Quick math:
2-3 miles is only 200-450 calories.
          1lb = 3500 calories.

If you want to run to lose weight you really need to run for like an hour.
20 miles a week is 2000-3000 calories which may then get you a pound lighter

Pretty much every time I hit the gym I gain weight.
You could also look into HIIT (search this site or google) which always seemed to help me lose weight (but only do it occasionally)

Dan - have you ever considered that you have a really unhealthy relationship with your scale? Why do you do this to yourself?

My weight fluctuates about 3-4 lbs over the course of a week. I can weigh 200 one day, and 202.5 the next. I don't give a damn. 200 is my lowest weight and that's what counts. I'm not eating any more, or cheating on carbs, or doing anything that causes a weight gain, so I have to attribute the 2.5 lbs to water or whatever. No big deal! The day after, I may be 201, then the day after that 204. Big whoop! It's NOT REAL. I know that sooner or later it will be 200 again, or 199, or 198. The 199 or 198 would reflect an actual loss in pounds. Anything above 200 is just nothing for me to even think about.

How about thinking about how your clothes fit, or what the tape measure says, or, even more importantly, how you FEEL? Energy? Sense of well-being? Healthy?

it's just water retention. You dehydrate yourself sweating most likely, and your body holds on to the water you put it in afterwards. Plus, your muscles will retain the water when they're hurting, so you combine the two and ya got water retention.

embrace it, it means you're working those muscles!

But only if it doesn't make you feel like giving up, Dan
If you can say to yourself 'So what - it will go down soon' and carry on Atkineering then you are not harming your dedication to your health and WOE..

But if you start to think 'I might as well stop trying' when you see that inevitable higher scale indication that is the time you must try to kick your scales addiction

I am addicted to weighing every day, also. That's not the issue. It is your CONCERN over what the scale says that is the issue.

So many of your posts are related to what the scale says that we're wondering if you are basing how your day goes on what number registers, or whether your mood or your motivation is determined by it.

It's just a number. An interesting number, to be sure. But not one that should be dominating our thinking.

                        Hi Dan

I must admit, it does seem frustrating - I certainly would be if I'd run for 2-3 miles!

I have to agree with Finelly though - maybe weigh yourself less often? I can't talk, I weigh myself most days...... sometimes it really isn't good though if the scale has not moved down and I feel down as a result.

well, when the scale says one number today... and a lower number one week from today... i'll stop weighing in like this... i just start to question if it's working or not if the scale doesn't move in a weeks time.
