Fatty liver and high blood sugar, dad died of diabetes, doctor was ready to kick my a$$, and I got sick of looking at myself in the mirror.

Most of what's already been said. Sick of taking painkillers for my broken back - less weight, more comfort for it. Ability to walk upstairs without gasping would be nice. Inability to rest my dinner on my gut would be better.
Less sweating in summer, no legs rubbing together thing. Not having to hunt for plus size clothes and actually buying something that doesn't look right on a 70 year old.
Not feeling tired at precisly 3pm every afternoon. Eating without feeling guilty. Being able to catch the damn cat when he rips up my underwear, being able to hang my underwear on the washing line without a sense of shame. Not taking up all the room in the wardrobe for the marquees I keep in there. Getting a couple of sizes below my step-daughter so she can't nick my granny-stlye clothes. Not getting stuck in the turnstiles when I got to a football match (it hasn't happened to me yet but it happened to my bro-in-law a month ago and I haven't been since, oooooh the shame...)

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

My main motivator in this struggle to get thin is curiosity. I do not know what it is to be thin. I can see pictures of myself as a five year-old, assuredly the last time I was considered to be a healthy weight, and not remember what it was like to be like everyone else physically.

I'm also doing this out of plain, old vanity. The guy I'm dating is "normal" and deliciously so. I revel in the fact that he's so gosh darn good-looking. And as a result, I feel he deserves better. While I know he likes me as I am, I want him to look at me the way I look at him: with desire, with pride. I want him to flaunt the fact that he has me on his arm, in much the same way I do with him. Shallow? Maybe, but if it's motivating me to lose weight, what's to complain about?

I want to throw away my fat clothes. I want to be able to sit in a class and not have to scan the room, hoping to find someone heavier than I am. I want to walk down the street and pass someone heavier than I am without having to promise myself that I'll never look the same. I want to look good naked.

The list goes on. But perhaps most importantly, I've learned to love myself heavy; now I want to be able love myself thin.

{{{gympy}}} I understand what you're talking about. I'd never thought about it that. But you're right--it would be something to feel thin again and have that curiosity! Thank you for the fresh viewpoint!

{{{Squaeaker}}} turn-stiles are evil! *lol* My dad did Atkins with a broken back. He lost 80 pounds in 6 months!

{{{Star}}} Did your doctor have to put down the stethoscpe to kick your hinder? Somehow I see you fending him off with the little rubber mallot used for reflex testing! LOL!

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

You guys are so great! I love this post! I have many of the same reasons you all have stated.

              1. Vanity. I want to be thin. I have never known what thin is like. The closest I remember is when I got down to 200 pounds. I felt happy, confident and thin at 200 pounds.

              2. Health. Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart issues all run in my family. I want to live a long, healthy and happy life. I want to meet my great-grandchildren one day - very, very far from now.

              3. My son. I want to instill healthy eating habits into his life. I don't want him to struggle as we have. I want to enjoy every second of his childhood. I want to run and play with him, teach him new things and I NEVER want him to be embarrassed of me when he starts school.

              4. My DH. I want to enjoy our love. I want him to desire me always. I want to feel sexy and confident in myself when I'm with him.

              5. I want to be able to pick out clothing that looks just as good on me as it does on the rack. LOL

              6. I want to wear clothing that is not considered "plus size."

              Just to name a few

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

My reasons for losing were self-centered when I first began. I was just plain ashamed of myself and hated the way I looked. After I found this site, read the book and realized all the other benefits of losing weight, being healthy became extremely important to me.

I totally agree with being able to help others. Since losing weight, I've volunteered in community searches for missing people, assisted with drives for the needy, and participated in library and school workshops for children. (Something I never would or could physically have done before).

I want to have a photo taken of my husband and me this Christmas. (I've never had a photo taken of us). My kids have wanted one for years.

Those are just a few reasons ... but they are upmost in my mind.

{{{Dream}}} You've always been such an inspiration to so many people (me included). I loved reading your reasons! I never thought about having a picture taken with hubby...how cute is that!!!

And being able to help people unencumbered by weight is really something I never thought about until I lost weight, either! You could launch me into the swamp, and anything at the bottom would float!

                      Now...

                      1. VANITY!! I have never been thin and it's been a long time since I've felt good in my body and KNEW I looked good in my clothes. Now I want to look great in my clothes and look great "nekkid" too!

                      2. Health: Diabetes runs in my family and I don't want it. I also want to get rid of my high blood pressure.

                      3. Fitness: I want to increase my endurance and be able to do all those wonderful activities that skinny, FIT, people enjoy!!

                      4. To one day get pregnant and have a "normal" (read: not high risk) pregnancy. This also kind of works back to number 2 in that if I get pregnant this late in life, I want to be the healthiest I can be for my children so that I can live a long life and see them grow up to be strong and healthy, productive adults.

                      5. CONTROL: Somehow I've recognized that knowing I can control what I put in my mouth spreads to greater control over my life. In the past and even now, when I've controlled my diet and exercise, it has made me feel more in control and know that I can reach any goal I set for myself.

Ditto on the control!!! A great reason for doing this, especially when resisting stuff we THINK we want, doesn't that just give you a GOOD feeling that you're stronger than that?

I agree on the control. Being able to control my weight has given me the insight to use the same stratedgy in all the goals I've been setting for myself. I am amazed to know that I AM in control of my life. You are who you strive to be is so true. I used to think I was just destined to be fat and unhappy.

AMEN Smallerizing and dream on the control issue! It feels so good to control what goes into our bodies! Enjoying the natural sweetness of butter and meat? Sooo not something I'd notice while scarfing red licorice!
