  • What made you all choose Atkins??

    Dear Fellow STACers,

HOpe you are all doing well!

Just curious to know what made you guys choose Atkins diet or WOE in the first place.... did you choose it after other attempts at losing weight, or what? Inquiring minds want to know!

I chose it because of the initial speed of weight loss..... I then realised what lovely foods you could eat.

I had tried every other diet out there...it was time for a new one that I had never tried.

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

I too had tried many many diets... WW, South Beach, the G.I. diet. When my husband was diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis (Colitis), we ended up putting him on a diet to help manage his symptoms that seemed very similar to Atkins (its called the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet"). I wanted a resource that could help him in terms of coming up with ways to eat a limited variety of food (Atkins Induction recipes!), and a way for me to lose weight was just bonus, especially given that it was something I wanted to do somehow anyway. So I bought the book to read out of curiosity, and found it made a **** of a lot of sense - for both of us. So we started right away.

Now his proctitis is in remission, and we're both almost 30lbs lighter. He's maintaining his weight presently, so he's eating low GI breads, 2% milk and lots of fruits and the like, and none of his symptoms have returned. (Thank god!) And I'm doing just peachy too.

To this day, Atkins is the diet that makes the most sense to me of them all, and seems the most smart. I just wish more people could clue in!

[Am I the only one wants to just grab those overweight people on the subway or streetcar who are reading trash diet books, and just say, "I can help you!" and telling them all about Atkins? Oh, the number of times I've wanted to do this...]

I'd been on every diet, even some that I made up myself to lose the weight. I was miserable and depressed about my weight. My daughter's girlfriend did low carb (not Atkins) and lost over 60 pounds in 4-5 months. She looked fantastic -- so I started reading up on Atkins and decided since I knew someone who'd lost on low-carb and was happy...I'd give it a shot. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be 115 pounds lighter and feeling so wonderful.

I nosed around on the internet and found ADBB and that is where I got the motivation to keep going and doing Atkins right.

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

            Great question!

I had never really dieted (well not seriously) at all, i've been truely overweight since I was 18, but always believed I was fat (long story). I always told myself that I was happy being me, and to some extent that was true, but in reallity part of me always knew I would be a lot healthier and happier if I was thinner! My cousin and best friend has on the other hand been on a diet of some kind or other for the last 20 years, (yoyo weight loss / gain) and then a few years ago she started Atkins, and to this day, although they have been some slips she is pretty much maintaining her weight loss.

Then last year I hit an all time high (or low) of over 378 lbs and reality hit, so I did my homework on Atkins, cleared out the kitchen, got my partner on board and off we went! A slight slip along the way cost me a few days off, but we're never looked back! Thanks again Dr A!!

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

I tried a few different diets and nothing worked for me. I even went to Jenny Criag but it didn't work for me.

Shortly before New Years of 2004 I made a promise tomyself I was going to start the new year out right and lose weight, so I went to the bookstore and got quite a few different diet books and read them all. After reading them all Atkins seemed the easiest to do, the one that made the most sense, and the one that seemed like I wasn't going to starve to death on it.

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

I really think this is the only thing that really works, and you see results fast enought to keep you motivated. I tried just "eating right" with low-cal, low-fat etc.; I ran every day, bought every exercise program around. Nothing happened. With Atkins, I can see my goal getting closer and closer.

Cardio exercise makes a HUGE difference. I bought those Ketostix at the drug store, and on days that I exercise, my ketones are much higher. Therefore, I'm burning more fat!!

Good luck and hang in there. It will work if you don't give up!
                      Peace, Jess~

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

Most recently (I've followed Atkins for over 22 years), I jknew a guy who was literally shrinking before my eyes. He'd lost in excess of 100 pounds pretty fast. I asked him what he was doing. He told me "Atkins".

I did try Weight Watchers, but was starving after 3 months of effort and only 25 pounds lost. On 3 months of Atkins following an older version of Atkins, I'd lost 55 pounds, and I was never hungry. I'm glad to now know about the 2002 version.

Diva, I'm glad you're not me! The struggles I've endured on this way of eating due to bad habits and sabotage are the reason I am not at goal right this very minute.

I know you will succeed where I've failed, and will smack this woe's fanny and show it who's its mama! You go, girl!

Re: What made you all choose Atkins??

I started Atkins because my little brother started it and lost weight on it quick. So I joined and lost about 20+ and quit for some reason. I had lost my insomnia and acne and depression, so I have no idea why I quit!?

So here I am again. My brother however has lost almost 70 lbs. You should see him he looks awsome and has so much energy! That is my goal, he is a big encouragment to me with this struggle.

Now if I can just stay focused!!

I started Atkins because like others....I have tried many diets. I lost 70 lbs once by low cal, low fat and mostly starving, but it didn't stay off because I didn't do it right the first time. My sister and her husband was doing atkins and doing great. I wanted the same results so I borrowed her book and read it. As a nurse, medically it made the best sense to me. So I started in July 24 of this year and am doing great. I have dropped from wearing a size 26/28 to a 18/20. I feel sooooo much better too. I have stayed on extended induction this whole time. I will move on to owls probably close to the holidays.

Honestly because a friend lost a lot of weight and I was desperate to lose weight! And it worked, and still is!!

Now the reason I've remained on this woe is the because I feel great, also the control I feel, lack of cravings, no heartburn, no bloated feeling and the increased energy!!
