  • What's the rule?

What's the rule about Atkins shakes and bars. Are they ok during induciton or should they be held off til later?
I have bought the shakes and could sure drink one for breakfast, but I am literally afraid of that "sweet taste"...because nothing sweet has touched these lips for 11 days...I really don't want to trigger anything, anything at all.

This is the second afternoon I feel washed out, tired, slight headache, and I might actually be working up a small tiny craving! Say a little prayer!

What's the ruling on the Atkins foods?

According to the book; 2 a day is permitted. According to pretty much everyone on this board; they are a big No No!! Of course because it would be sooo much easier if we could "endulge" in a bar if we felt a craving. Mostly the advice seems to be to stayaway from "frankenfoods" Of course ?I op

Sorry I have my 10 month old on my lap. I was just going to add that personally to me if it's an Atkins bar or a hand full of cookies I assume the ATkins bar is the better choice. They are an awful crutch and a big stall for a lot of people.

So that's what "Frankenfoods" means, a bar or a drink...
Well that makes sense. I have been wondering what would happen, if I drank one.
Would a sweet taste linger and trigger other sensations that my tongue cannot quite remember as well as my mind...
Thanks Zelda, I want to hear from more people and I would LOVE to know the LOGIC behind avoiding Frankenfoods...

I know for myself, the bars trigger sweet cravings for me...once I have one, I want one the next day and the next day. The bars also stall me...it doesn't matter which Atkins or lowcarb bar it is. The shakes don't give me the sweet cravings as bad as the bars. I don't use the shakes or the bars anymore because of the cravings...besides they are pretty expensive. If I "need" something sweet or chocolately, I whip up a little heavy whipping cream and add some splenda and sugar free chocolate sauce...it hits the spot and also because the whip cream is so rich, I tend not to go overboard with my amounts

            Re: What's the rule?

I used to rely heavily on the bars, shakes and sweet *frankenfoods* last year when i was doing Atkins. I did lose 50 pounds but now looking back i feel that i was abusing them, and that they lead to cheating. I think it is a personal decision, and you have to know what your body can handle. For now, i will use them for emergency situations. I think it is much better to have a low-carb bar or shake than to reach for something much worse (like cookies, donuts or whatever...) So i guess my advice is to stay away, unless you find yourself in a tough situation!

I agree with DragonFlyMoon "I think it is much better to have a low-carb bar or shake than to reach for something much worse (like cookies, donuts or whatever...)"

This is about making better choices healthier choices, but if you really have a sweet tooth, it's probably best to opt out of using shakes/bars and have instead a Non-processed food.. I would say no, but in the end it is all up to you. It might very well lead to a cheat, you never know I'd just play it on the safe side you are doing so well!

i sure would love to see the page where this is stated. the rule for using any low carb convenient food is clearly spelled out in chapter 11 and it says in an emergency and it also says you must still follow the rules of induction for use.

After Dr Atkins died ANA redid the Atkins.com website but in 2003 there was an entire section about what to di if the bars stalled/stopped your weight loss. No other food recieved such a section. it basically said if they did don't eat them, so why would you even want to use a known stalling product that caused enough stalling to merit a page on Dr Atkins site? And what kind of an emergency can it be if you can go into a store and buy a bar you sure as heck could buy real acceptable foods too. follow the rules of induction in chapter 11 and you will be a big loser too.

I haven't read that in the book either and I can tell you from experience that 2 of those a day leads 3 or 4 the next day. They are a huge staller for me as they are with others. I also GAINED eating so many of them. I learned my lesson the hard way. Don't be like me. Stay far away from them!

                    Re: What's the rule?

I tried them last go round - ick. I'd rather make my own low-carb stuff using real foods. I have a recipe for a shake using ice cubes, whipping cream, splenda, protein powder.. seems like there is something else..cottage cheese! it was called Carolina's shake? something along those lines. It was really good and I had one a day for breakfast. That lead to laziness and I'd have one for late night snack... and one for lunch as a "shake" with my burger.. so I over indulged to say the least. They started out as a meal replacement in the mornings when I was on the go and it was fast and easy and kept me full until lunch. Then it became a bad habit. If you have time to whip up a shake.. you have time to whip up a food.

Well there is a common line here that these products, though carrying the Atkins name and are a product of his food company, are not the best thing to reach for. They cause stalls and they can easily be abused. Proceed with caution!!!

Don't do it. They are the slippery slope to cheating. Believe me, I know . The worst part is, I LIKE the peanut butter chocolate bars. What I'm doing this time around when I absolutely have to have something like that is eating one of these sugar free lollipops I've got. Takes a while to suck them down, and it cures any needs I have for sugar. Now, if I seem to be stalling I'll drop those as well. I know that sweet foods can trigger the insulin response regardless of sugar.

If you can avoid it, I definitely would not use them. The best success I had on this way of eating was in 2000, before they introduced all of these low carb products. You had to rely completely on natural foods.

But I agree that in an emergency situation it would benefit you more to eat the bar or drink the shake than to grab a donut at an office meeting or something, you know? I have also chosen to purchase a sugar free candy when having a craving rather than indulging in a real candy bar. If you decide to try them, just listen to your body. See how it effects you.

Page 84 of "The Atkins Essentials" Directly after the section concerning Atkins Low Carb Convenience Foods...
"Note: Do not consume more than 2 servings of low carb alternative foods during Induction, and remember that you still must count your grams of net carbs. If you have trouble losing weight you may want to replace these products with protein and fat whole foods during the Induction phase."
Later in the book they have a sample list that has one or two of these products in just about every day of the sample 2 week menu.
I guess it's my assumption that if 2 is Ok during Induction it's probably Ok during the later stages (according to the book).
