  • I'm glad the low carb fad is over....or not!

Remember about a year, or year and a half, ago how, that where ever you went in the supermarket, hundreds of products shouted "LOW CARB!"? It appears that the fad has now passed on, and I am glad in many ways. I think many folks thought if they just bought a bunch of "low carb" products that they'd lose weight. Of course, all of us here have always known the awful truth in that way of thinking, so I'm glad that I no longer see the sugar alcohol laden candies, cookies, and ice creams shouting at me from the aisles.

There were a number of good products that came out, then, however; and those I miss. The "Carb Options" line seems to have disappeared, totally. Fortunately, for some of the products that I used there are some good substitutions. I can still find "no sugar added" peanut butter -- they substitute Splenda for the sugar -- even though it's not specifically labled "low carb" it's exactly the same product. Salad dressings have never been a problem, either. However, there were both barbecue sauces and steak sauces available, that were very nice, and sugar free, which I just can't find anymore. Keto Crumbs, which I used to get at GNC, was nearly perfect for breading fish or chicken, or added to meatloaf, and it's now disappeared, as well.

The supermarket nearest my home no longer carries Hood's Carb Countdown, but, fortunately, the one near my office still does.

So, all in all, I think I'm glad that low carbing is no longer considered the latest fad. I just wish we could have kept the good things that came from it, while losing all that bad stuff!

I was so glad when the rush was over with low-carb products all over the place. "You cannot eat all of them and lose weight" is what I wanted to shout from the rooftops! Same thing with low-fat stuff. my sister thinks she's doing something wonderful by eating low-fat stuff. She does not look at portion sizes.. afterall, it's low fat!

My Mom always did that, too. Once, when I was visiting, I took out about a dozen "low fat" items out of her fridge and cupboards, and showed her how when they took out the fat, they added a refined sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup, to replace it, in order to give it flavor. In some cases, the low fat items have more calories than the regular product. Of course, our bodies evolved to properly metabolize the fat, but not the refined sugar!

I feel pretty certain that the whole low fat craze is partially responsible for the significant rise in obesity in this country during the last few decades.

I've never purchased any of the low-carb products, although I've been told that some of them were very tasty and didn't cause people to stall. I don't think I'd use any of it now -- since I've become comfortable with doing without the stuff I can't find substitues for. Spices have become my best friend - I use them to flavor foods more than I've ever done before.

That's a great point, Chris! I've noticed that they don't have nearly as much low carb stuff as they used to in the stores. And i do miss a few things, but all in all, i agree that it is good that this "fad" is over. When i was on Atkins the last time around, (the time before last, i should say) i used to eat those horrific little sugar free "low carb" candies... and holy cow, that would give me the worst tummy aches!!! Not to mention the gas...

Funny how now that i am eating whole, fresh, natural foods i no longer get stomach aches or gas... not anymore!

I know lots of people who went on "Atkins" and filled their pantries and their bodies with that stuff.....they failed. I was victim to it the first time I did it too.

For the most part, I avoid that stuff like the plague now, with a few exceptions: Hood's Calorie (carb) countdown milk, OneCarb Ketchup (for as long as it lasts), and BlueBunny carb control yogurt, and Mission brand LC tortillas.

I avoid shakes, bars, candy, "snacks", bake mixes, etc.

But, even if they quit making the few products I do use...I'd still be able to make great stuff to eat...and be happy

I do enjoy several specialty products specifically sugar free pickle relish, carb countdown milk---now labeled as calorie countdown but same nutritional compostion, Soy slender soy vanilla soy milk, KC masterpeice Classsic blend BBQ sauce which is not labeled as low carb but has Splenda in it.

I agree. Those products gave LowCarb a bad name.
BTW..I buy the cheap noname brand of peanut butter at the store and it just has peanuts and salt in it.
