  • Soy Flour & Soy Beans

I was watching an episode of some low-carb cooking show - some guy named Blaine. Well anyway, he made fried chicken with soy flour. Just wondering if anyone has tried this kind of flour and how did you like it?

I am still on induction and not allowed to have that but I just wondered about it. Also I noticed in the Atkins book that Soy Beans are mentioned. Anyone tried them? Are they like pinto beans or kidney beans???

    Just curious!

Soy flour definitely has a different taste to it. I tried it on fried chicken once and didn't like it. I usually mix it with something and use it to bake with and then it tastes fine.

Soy products are legal on Rung 6 of OWL, legumes rung.

Soy flour is tricky to use, as it has a VERY strong soy taste, that doesn't usually disappear with baking or cooking, in my experience. I've made fried chicken before, but used a combination of almond flour and parmesan cheese. This would be legal on Rung 3, Nuts and Seeds.

Re: Soy Flour & Soy Beans

I use soy protein powder frequently. It has zero carbs. I have a cookbook where I can make cookie type things and soy protein powder is often the flour substitute. I've never used the powder, it does have carbs in it. I've just never come across a recipe calling for it.

As far as soybeans--YUM!!! They are flat and in a pod--I think there are like two in a pod. My upstairs neighbor is addicted to them. At a party, she put them in the microwave and then lay them out on a plate and pour some salt over the top of them. Sea salt works best. You put the pod in your moth and hold the end with your fingers and clamp your teeth together and slide the pod out between your teeth and catch the two yummy soybeans that come out. These are addicting as all get out and the whole party loved them, she had to keep making more!

Re: Soy Flour & Soy Beans

The protein powder is yummy, I use vanilla sometimes. I bought mine at Wal-Mart. Soy flour is pretty easy to find in the baking aisle. Bob's Red Mill makes it, as do many other companies. Almond flour is a bit tricker to find. The only place I've seen it here in my little podunk town is at the health food store--and it's $13 a bag. I make my own! I just put 1 or 2oz. of almonds in a coffee grinder, and grind for a few seconds. It's a little coarser than the stuff you buy, but it tastes awesome and is WAYYYY cheaper!

Just make sure you're on rung 3 for almond flour, and rung 6 for all soy ingredients!

Re: Soy Flour & Soy Beans

Vitamin Cottage has a wide variety of stuff like that. I was just in there yesterday and say Hazlenut flour with VERY low carbs that you can use to make crusts with. It's that Bobs Red Mill brand Juli mentioned. It's 10.00 or 15.00 a bag, so not cheap. They have all sorts of stuff there like that.

Also, Whole Foods. Soy protein powder is in the vitamin supplement isle where health drink mixes are.

Trader Joes has almond powder and its not that expensive. I don't know if you have a TJ's nearby. But if there is one in driving distance it is worth the trip because they have so many great foods that work on this WOE.
