Re: How Heavy is TOO heavy to run?

Hey all, just wanted to say that I did the Couch to 5K program at Cool Running a couple of years ago, and I would highly recommend it!~ They have a forum over there too where you can check in and record your run for the day. It's just awesome!
It took me about 3 weeks to notice a change, and it was in my endurance and stamina...it was just amazing.
Unfortunately I herniated 2 discs in my back since then (not due to running) and am recovering from that injury still, 18 months later. So no running for now, but hopefully one day again.

Thumper1616...go to the site again, see the photo of the people running? Right under it is a link to a printer friendly page. Go to that. It's much easier to read! I printed that off and then I had it to refer to whenever I needed it. If you go back to the page you started on, at the top you'll see a tab marked, "Community". Click on that, and then on the next page look to the left and click on the tab that says, "Discussion Forums". The "Newbie Cafe" is where beginning runners go. Lots of support and encouragement just like here. I hope this helps you out!

Re: How Heavy is TOO heavy to run?

Please don't even think about running, especially now. I trashed my knees running and wound up having knee surgery. There are so many alternatives that are easier on the joints and just as effective at achieving and maintaining weight loss. For me running was addictive. I ran even when my knees hurt and just took NSAIDS (Motrin and other non-steriodal pain relievers and anti-inflammatories). I really regret it now. 26 miles is a long way to run even if you've never damaged your joints by carrying around excess weight. The wear and tear on your joints when your morbidly obese remains even when you've lost the weight, the best you can do is build up the muscles around those joints and avoid any further breakdown. Bone and cartilege does heal and replace itself, but it takes a very long time. Stick with walking and other exercises that aren't as hard on your joints. Trust me... when you've got a serious injury your fitness options are severely limited. Don't risk it, find something safer that you enjoy. I was hooked on that "runner's high" and I've got the surgical scar as a reminder.
