Angela....I don't really know how much weight you have to lose, but I would think you need to drop the weight while working the abdominal muscles at the same time and eventually it'll balance out. I have 2 herniated discs in my back and after 18 months am finally no longer in pain. Only if I sit funny.
The best thing you can do for your abdominals is probably Pilates, so you can strengthen your core muscles. You need someone to guide you though; a Pilates instructor, so you understand what the he** you're really doing! Having a strong core is half the battle against back pain and re-injury.
