    Re: Monday Morning Role Call

    Hi All,

This may be my goodbye to Atkins. My husband just called me from the doctor's office and his blood pressure was 179/110 and they would not let him leave the office until his bp came down. He was there for half an hour and it was still high so they ended up giving him a bp medication pill and a new prescription to go along with it.

My husband has been doing Atkins with me for the last three weeks and when the doctor found out we were doing this diet she got very upset and said we needed to go off it right away. I have high blood pressure and have been taking medication since I was in my twenties.

So we have to try something different because of the BP readings. Mine have been high over the last couple of weeks too and I have been taking my medication. I am going to try and do the lower fat diet for a couple weeks and see where my readings stand. We just may be some of the few people who can not tolerate the diet. It is hard because I have felt better eating on Atkins I haven't had the bloat and my stomach is flatter, but the bp thing is scary. The doctor suggested something called the DASH diet which I will have to go and lookup and read about.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

    Love ya
    Deb

Wow...shocked and sorry to hear that Deb.

I didn't really realize there were people that Atkins affected differently...probably naive of me, but I just never thought about it.

I guess I've never heard of anyone's blood pressure going UP eating this way.

Hmmmmm....hope everything works out for you and hubby.

              Deb,

Sorry to hear all of this. It just so happens that I may have a blood pressure issue, as well. There's a big difference in my case, though... my doctor is pro-Atkins. Here is an excerpt from a post I made a few days ago talking about a physical and complete blood count I had with my primary care physician on July 13th:

"Something did happen at that physical and earlier in the week when I went for my yearly PAP and mammogram that has thrown me for a loop... my blood pressure was waaaay too high. I had not had trouble before with blood pressure. In fact, I was sitting in the waiting room of my gynocologist feeling rather smug, because I had lost 38 pounds since the end of February and exercise daily and just knew that everything was going to look great. They told me that a single high reading was nothing to be alarmed about and they wanted me to go to a place like a drug store that has those blood pressure machines and check my blood pressure daily and let my primary care physician know what my numbers had been when I went for my physical. The stupid numbers were high every day, and that Friday when I went, the nurse said my pressure was 160/90. My doctor is 100% pro-Atkins, so I knew he would give me a straight answer when I asked him why my pressure was up when I thought Atkins would be good for lowering pressure. He said high blood pressure can be hereditary and to absolutely stay on Atkins. We will talk in more detail when I go back for results next Thursday."

So, I am really looking forward to going back on Thursday of this week for all of the results of my complete blood counts, X-rays, etc. High blood pressure does run in my family, and it is possible that it is just in my genes to have it. I have been doing some reading on high blood pressure, and I found that in 95% of the cases, the cause is unknown. So, I feel very blessed to have a primary care physician that I totally trust and is a believer in Atkins. I know that if he ends up telling me that I need to do something other than Atkins, it will be because he has explored all of the factors and not just assume that Atkins is the culprit. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming your doc or the care she is giving you... I'm just saying that I am glad that mine isn't anti-Atkins and will work with me to stay on it as much as I can.

Is there history of high blood pressure for some of the members in your families? Please keep up posted on how you are doing. I will let everyone here know what is going on with me once I know on Thursday, if anyone is interested.

              Take Care

Edited to Add: Deb, I just read in another post that you are a diet coke addict... is that the diet coke with caffiene? One thing my doc did stress, was to cut out all caffiene if I was having any. Thankfully, that's at least one bad habit that I never picked up... never been a coffee drinker and don't do sodas.

                Re: Monday Morning Role Call

                Hi Mitzi,

Thank you for your post. I have had high blood pressure since my early twenties and I am in the 95% I guess because doctors could never find the reason. It must be hereditary as my great grandfather and great grandmother both died of coronary artery disease and hypertention and there are other relatives with it as well. My doctor is concerned for that reason and also for the fact that my mother developed breast cancer which makes me more susceptible. She is not against Atkins for everyone but she is against it for me and my husband because of family histories. That is her reasoning.

I do drink alot of diet coke and I am trying to cut back. I heard the news reports this morning about it and heart disease. So I have three small bottles left and have resolved not to buy any more.

I would be really interested in hearing the reports you get back from your doctor. It will be interesting to see what your doctor says.

Thanks for writing I really appreciate it.

                  Hello,

I am also curious to hear more about what your doctors say. Last time I went my bad cholestrol was W A Y high. This was last fall and I was slipping away from the Atkins WOE. BUT, my father lost tons of weight on Atkins right before he had a heart attack. Wound up having triple bypass surgery. He is fine now and misses Atkins. He says his doctor told him his condition was hereditary...BUT, if that is the case I may be prone to it too. And if that IS the case........geeze, I don't even want to think about it.

                    Hello

Deb, you are very welcome. Please keep us updated on whatever plan you choose to follow. Let us know if you are enjoying it, if it is working for you, etc. I would be very interested to know.

Candy, thank you for your interest. I will be happy to create a thread with all of my results when I get them. I have only had a complete blood count after a 14 hour fast done once before. It was in 2004 after I had been on Atkins for 10 months and lost 60 pounds. My cholesterol numbers were good. Total was 123, and my triglcerides were really low, too... something like 70. My good cholesterol could have been higher... it was 41. I'm hoping to get a higher number this time around. Trouble was, I don't know what my numbers were pre-Atkins, so I had nothing to compare them to... don't know if they went up, down, or remained the same. I am anxious to see what they are this time.

                      Re: Monday Morning Role Call

Thanks Mitzi, I never knew my numbers before either. My doctor didn't seem overly concerned at the time and I am now taking meds for cholestrol. Next time I have bloodwork taken I'll report in.
