  • Atkins Induction: things have changed?

I started on Atkins about a year ago then let it go. I'm started the induction phase again a few days ago and have already lost weight.

In checking the Atkins website, three things appear to have been added to the Induction phase that were not allowed before:

    - a small amount of caffeine
    - diet soda
    - Atkins food bars

I'm glad for the additions however I want to make sure I understand correctly. Somewhere in this forum I read that ya'll "go by the book." I got my book last year and none of the above were allowed during Induction phase.

    Please advise. Thank you.

Money, money, money... on ABBA's rhythms.

To the point, none of those is completely legal on induction. Some might not be affected you at all, some might... depends on each individual... but if you want to do a perfect induction (and hey, who doesn't?!) they are not allowed.

You can have coffee, but decaff. Just make sure you also drink a lot of water.

Diet soda has aspartame, and aspartame is EEEEVIL!

Atkins bars... I don't even know how to say it. Those guys promote their bars as induction-friendly, but they put all this non-induction stuff in them (e.g. carrots, peanuts). Plus I was never able to figure out how they count the carbs in a bar.

I can't figure out how they count the carbs either. But I do have a box in the fridge so if others around me are having "candy bars" and I really want one, at least I will have the lesser of the two evils to choose from
I have had one for the strawberry shakes. It was yummy. I did not have it as a meal replacement though. Just as a midweek treat.

Neither do I. For example, on the box of their Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar it says "On 2gr Net Carbs." But in the Nutrition Facts section, it says there are 22g Total carbs and 10g Dietary Fiber. Doesn't that make Net carbs 12, not 2g?!

I guess it's difficult to know what rules to follow and who to believe.

Atkins recommends Splenda yet a headline today says: "New Study of Splenda and Sucralose Reveals Shocking New Information About Potential Harmful Effect on Humans" (including increasing weight):

Chairman of Citizens for Health Declares FDA Should Review Approval of Splenda

        Go figure.

I did email them about this and posted their response to the atkins bars earlier today. I hope you get a chance to read it. It sort of makes sense if you believe what they are saying.

We pretty much follow and encourage others to adhere to the 2002 Edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. DANDR.
The website and company supporting the products changed after Dr. Atkins died. Since then, there has been a change in the products to make them taste better.

The spirit of low carb is to stay away from as much processed food as possible. Granted i am of the school that if in a tough place, frankenfoods are better than sugar-laden foods....
People has very strong opinions about caffeine and how their bodies tolerate it, and the sweetners. Finding your way is what is the most important thing. I switched from Equal to Splenda, yet never gave up a drop of coffee and lost 85lbs in less than a year. One of the things you are watching for is: does the coffee trigger hunger pangs? Does the splenda stall your progress? Is diet soda replacing water and are you aware your body needs water!

Thanks for the info, Donna. Sounds a little gobbly gook to me: "Net Carbohydrates of interest to consumers who do Atkins."

So for those eating the bars, what carb count do you use: the one on the front of the box (2gr) or the carb math on the back of the box (12gr)?
