  • Blood sugar CRASH.... Opinions please!

Okay, a pattern has formed that is totally out of control. Every work day (haven't noticed this on the weekends) I seem to have a blood sugar crash about mid morning and mid afternoon.

I am eating. Every work day, I take bacon, eggs and one cup of pumpkin to work. Sometimes I also have almonds. I graze on the pumpkin all morning long, I don't scarf all the carbs down at once. For lunch, I take tuna with mayo and some form of veggie.

I found myself face down on my desk today. I was loopy, totally out of it, confused, slurred speech. The people in my office were freaking out. They basically fed me sugar and within 15 or 20 minutes I felt better except for the fact that I DON'T EAT SUGAR!!! It didn't knock me out of ketosis but something has got to give here. I got the lectures at work about abusing my body to drop the weight I have, that I've become obsessed, blah, blah, blah. I'm not interested in any of those opinions. I need facts.

Why is this happening? What can I do to prevent it? I'm researching it online but want direct experiences from those who follow Atkins.

Side note--I am going to the doctor at the end of the month for 6 month blood work. Can't get in before then because I've arranged time off work for it. A coworker is bring a monitor in tomorrow to test my blood sugar when I go stupid again. That could be interesting.

Hi Everlosing.. I wonder if its the pumpkin.. Are you putting in any artificial sweeteners in it? Try having something different today even its just some kind of meat...

I hate when I get that blood sugar dropping and of course that is happening a lot since I am not on plan But does it get me working on it again.. Nope

Dr. Keith Berkowitz, who was an associate of Dr. Atkins, actually noticed that some of his patients who have been on a low carb diet for a long time or/and have lost a significant amount of weight can have problems with hypoglycemia after a normal low carb meal (about 1-2 hours after a meal, their blood sugar goes below the fasting level).

Some symptoms you should look for is feeling hungry after you eat (despite ketosis), fatigue, light-headedness, migranes, palpitations...

What Dr. Berkowitz recommends is having smaller meals more frequently (2-3 hours apart), sleeping better/more, avoiding stress (yeah, right... easy to say), strength training and snacks like veggies, cheese, nuts or berries in case you run into trouble. Of course, you should eat these snacks with some fat.

Measure your fasting blood sugar and then monitor your blood sugar for a few hours after you eat and see how it changes.

You're not drinking coffee, are you?

I bought the best coffee maker for myself for Christmas. Just dusted it off a few days ago!! I got to use it for only a few days before I restarted, so, no coffee for me anymore!

I hate the frequent meals...difficult to do at work and I've found I lose best (most) when I follow the eat when I'm hungry or use the 6 hour rule. I don't want to cut out the pumpkin because I use it to sneak in my carbs and flax. I need both to lose.

I'm going in to work this morning fasting and my coworker will check my blood. Then, I'll have shrimp alfredo with spaghetti squash and I'll have her test it again in a couple of hours? That should give us a better idea, right?

I'm not a doctor, but from what I've read, that makes sense to me. I know Jimmy Moore dealt with this problem and he was measuring his blood glucose something like 30 min apart for a few hours after a meal... if I remember correctly. I'll look for the podcast episode where he interviewed Dr. Berkowitz and post the link here.

            Okay. Here it is: http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/d...a-episode-144/

BTW, if you eat smaller meals, you'll still stick to the "eat when you're hungry or 6h passed" rule, because you'll just get hungry more often. The smaller meals could be a handful of almonds or a slice of quiche or a muffin, maybe?

Hiya Everlosing, I'm afraid I don't have any useful advice, I just wanted to see what the results of your tests were today! I hope you are able to figure out what is going on and I am so impressed with you for being so dedicated even while experiencing these crashes!

Thanks, APanthesilia!! I can remember the old fat me having blood sugar issues too!! I have no choice but to continue to be dedicated because I've lost too much weight to have to do it all again!!! Before this WOE, I fed myself carbs all day to avoid the crashes, horrible carbs, Life Saver breath mints ALL THE TIME, Coke, MelloYello, candy bars, chips. Junkoholic here! I just grabbed whatever out of the vending machines at work. No more!! Pork rinds are the only legal food in the machine and there are probably 40-50 things stocked in it!! BBQ pork rinds just don't do it for me!

No glaring answers whatsoever today!!! My fasting blood sugar first thing before breakfast was 84. My girlfriend told me that was absolutely perfect. I didn't have a severe crash today like yesterday. Ate some different foods today. I ate lunch at noonish....I had tuna and mayo and cucumber slices and ranch dressing. I grazed on that for 45 minutes or so. By 3 pm, I was feeling down, sluggish, mental fog, a little stupid, not all there but I could walk and it was nothing like the crash the day before. We tested again and my blood sugar was 87.

What the heck??? What else could mimick low blood sugar symptoms? We were shocked. It wasn't bad today, my speech wasn't slurred but I expected it to be somewhat low. I wonder if it's my blood pressure. I guess I'll take the BP monitor to work tomorrow and check it throughout the day. That's easy enough...with no blood involved! I'm still not completely convinced there isn't a low blood sugar issue but I feel like I have no proof to back up my theory!

You can also get blood sugar problems from too much protein or from a cephalic reaction.
