  • Your "OH MY GOD!!!" moments...

One of the greatest things when doing Atkins is when a friend / relative you haven't seen in a while sees you and says "Oh my god! You've lost so much weight!" or something along those lines. The ones that ask "Are you losing weight?" are nice but it's the ones that show complete surprise that make me smile. Here's one of mine...

Joy is an former officemate of mine whom I last saw last November. I was just on my first week of induction at the time. Around two weeks ago, I asked her out to lunch. She was stunned when I walked into the office to pick her up. the conversation went like this...

Joy : Robbie! Oh my god! What happened to you? You lost so much weight. What did you do?

    Me : Um... sex. <grin>

Joy : No, really. What did you do?

Me : Why? You can't believe that I'm having sex?

    Joy : No.

    Me : Hoookay. <snicker>

Joy : If you're having lots of sex, then does that mean you have a girlfriend?

Me : Who says I needed a girlfriend to have sex?

Joy : No, really. WHAT DID YOU DO?

The main reason I couldn't get away with sex as a reason for my weight loss was that I had a reputation of an altar boy (Okay, I was an altar boy but she didn't know that). Atkins isn't well known here in the Philippines so I had to explain to her over lunch that I was on a low-carb diet. She was amazed that I was eating more that she was and I was claiming to be on a diet.

So, what are some of your favorite OMG moments?

The Opposite of an OMG Moment...

    Robbie -

I've had a number of nice encounters with people who've been amazed (like when I met one of my brothers downtown, and he almost didn't recognize me through a crowd).

But what was interesting was what I would think was the opposite of an omigod moment - one where I thought that people would be amazed, but weren't.

I lost just under 50 lbs before my 15-year high school reunion last month, and was really excited to go back and revel in being skinny again. Not only did people not notice, but I had someone compliment me on the fact that my face looked more full now that I was an adult.

Why? Because, like an idiot, I had forgotten that people only knew me was a skinny guy, not the double-extra-sized guy that I had become.

There was a certain amount of comfort to be taken in that, I suppose. I found it funny.

      Great topic!!

My favorite was just last month. DH and I went to Colorado to visit our 24 yr old son, who I hadn't seen since last September. (Started Atkins in late Jan. of this year.) I was up in the hotel room when he arrived, he and DH waited for me in the parking lot. I walked out the door and saw son look up and, for a second, not know it was me...and then he said

"OHMYGAWD, Mom....there's only HALF of you!!!"

And I didn't even have to pay him to say it.... way kewl.

Actually my OMG moment was me! I saw being shown some pics from a family event and I knew I has been there and I never saw myself in any of the pictures. I ask my 8 yr old nephew why he was showing me a pic of him and my cousin and he looked at me and said that isn't Mary that's you! I was stunned. I had no idea I had gotten that small. I mean I had to buy new clothes for the even and was elated that I was wearing a size :yikes 12 but it just didn't sink in what a size 12 looked like in real life. I guess my fat goggles were welded on my face.
