  • Exercise Slug Leaves A Slow Winding Trail...

I didn't begin exercising until Day 9. Approx. 30 minutes/day walking or running plus core training. Is this enough. Last night there was a news story about women and heart disease stating women should get a MINIMUM of 60 minutes of exercise per day at least 4 times a week. I don't know how to fit that kind of workout into my schedule. ??? Help....

Also, as I am participating in this WOE as a quasi vegetarian, I realize I cannot have a clean induction - but I am keeping to the 20g carbs/day. I feel that avoiding soy based products would really reduce the amount of protein I am able to take in. Any suggestions?

The last thing I saw said you reduce your chances with 20 minutes 4 times a week. ANY exercise is better than none, and 30 minutes is great if that's all you can get.

Well, quasi - means partial, or 'to some degree'. I do not eat any red meats, chicken, pork, turkey...blah blah blah. I do eat fish and seafood. This identifier "quasi vegetarian" is only allotted, to my knowledge to people who maintain a primarily vegetarian diet as well as fish and seafood, but not the other meats. The crude breakdown: carnivore, quasi, vegetarian (no meat at all, but still consumes biproducts such as eggs, milk, cheeses) and then vegan (eating no meat or animal biproducts).

I love cheese so I am not willing to give up the biproducts. I got really protein deficient in my early 20s and had to rethink my vegetarian lifestyle, so I reincorporated the fishies for a happier healthier me. I am now attemtping to work off the additional cookies I also habited myself with.

Actually, you are allowed tofu, as it's considered a "soy cheese" but check the carb counts. Each brand is different. And as long as you're eating your seafood, you should be getting enough protein. Do you like eggs? Those are also a great source of it.

With your seafood, make sure to count the carbs if you eat shellfish. Also, don't buy imitation crab or lobster, as that stuff is loaded with sugar.

ahhhh tofu. I am ever impatient with it. I'll put it in the oven to bake - 250 degrees, 4 hrs....and then I forget....and later in the day I find horrible burned smokey shriveled bricks where the lovely slices once lay . I don't like it pan fried....but have used it in a mash form with tumerick and other spices for "scrambled eggs". Very tasty.

Thanks for the mention, though. I usually just toss the idea aside, as I am not a talented tofu chef. But I shall attempt again and again.

I grew up vegetarian and we ate fish/shellfish. I love the tofu. MY mom used to make it and I would swipe it still warm and eat with some soy sauce. In fact, the other day I bought some and basically did just that. I was never really one to eat it cooked unless it was in a stir-fry with a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah, not raw...not ever. Atleast, not me. I cook it always. Just, not very well....or consistently.

Of late, I have really fallen in love with the 'veggie crumbler' stuff. Looks like crumbled ground beef. Has around 2g carbs per 2/3 cup svg....but I made my own bbq sauce (0.6g carbs/Tbs) and added some cheese. I chopped up a few slices of onion and red bell pepper. Sauteed them in olive oil and placed a few portobello caps over them to steam as they cooked. Pulled out the portos, placed them cup-up in a pan....Pulled out the onion and pepper and mixed with the bbq crumbler.....then I stuffed the mix maniacally into the portobello caps .....topped with monteray jack cheese (0g carbs/7g protein) and had BBQ Cups for dinner last night. MMMM.

All at around 3 g carbs/porto. If you haven't had BBq in a while, I can dig up my recipe - it is slap your mama good.

maniacally, eh?? I tend to not eat store-bought tofu. It's just really not the same. I remember looking at carb counts on the Morningstar Farms "Grillers" and being shocked by them being really high back in like, 1999...

Those bbq cups sound kinda yummy... if you like portabellas... and bbq...

ahhh, much has changed, I suppose. The grillers are the only veggie burgers I allow myself, as they have 2g carbs/burger. I have grown to truly enjoy them. But, when I was a newcomer to the vegetarian food options, I thought they were too close to the real thing.....so for a long time I wouldn't dare have them...

Ah... see, I didn't eat any meat until I was over 18. My mom had grown up an omnivore, so those were the ones we always had. I didn't know what the regular ones tasted like so I couldn't really compare. If they're only 2g/burger though, maybe I should go get some of those since I still *LOVE* them. I don't think they taste like regular ones, but I'm still getting used to the taste of burgers that aren't like, McDonalds or whatever. They had the hotdogs too that were good, and the chicken patties... mmm...

Hey there Deber, I have heard from my cardiologist that exercise is cumulative, so if you get 15 minutes in in the morning, 30 minutes in when you usually do and maybe a 15 minute fast walk in in the evening you will have your 60 minutes! Lunch breaks, walking from a car to a store by parking far away, going around the block a few times after dinner, or even going up the stairs in your home back down and up again for the same trip (or using the stairs instead of an elevator) is a great way to get all of your exercise in. 30 minutes is great, and really good enough, but maybe trying a few things that don't require a whole hour at one time can give you the heart healthy exercise you're looking for. Hope this helps!

after almost 5 months on Atkins and over 63 lbs down! Watch for updates!

Lyssie - if you're going hot dogs - GO SMARTDOGS. 1g carbs/9g protein and 45 calories per dog. And - they're good. I eat them all the time and my beau laughs. He's never met a veg who loves the dogs as much as I do. A little deli mustard, avocado, and monterray jack - mmmmm. It IS my favorite meal. I think I might try them with eggplant or greenbean 'fries'.

Hubbys girl - thanks for the update. I have been using my stairs, instead of the elevator - but you sparked a new 'break' idea for me. I can do the stairs in our building for 15 minutes after/before lunch. ROCK ON! That's fabulous!

                          - Deber

I stopped eating meat when I was 17. I am 29 now, and didn't start with all the veg products until I was around age 22?? College years taught me a lot about alot. Most of my buddies were "hippie-esque". We lived in a culdesac community. Drum circles, pot luck vegetarian meals, nobody locked their doors, everybody had a dog and a bike and a rasta hat. ha ha ha. I miss those folks sometimes.....These days, everyone I know is fast food and trigger happy. Crazy how it flip flops, eh? But so back to the food - They (the hippie-esquers taught me the ways of the vegetarian foods section at the local Kroger.
