Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

I've lost a total of near 45 pounds from my highest weight in January, but no one noticed yet. I know it's because I'm so large. It's like scooping a bucket of water out of a lake as opposed to a bathtub. lol

My father doesn't believe I lost weight. I can tell, even though he didn't say it. He just asks me how much more I've lost every single day when he calls.

It will be weird when people begin noticing and saying, "Oh, wow!" kinds of things to me. I'm very introverted, so the attention is going to be uncomfortable.

Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

I've done the full caboodle: Atkins + walking + swimming + weight lifting. (Don't you just love it when men past 40 start to try to reclaim their youth? ) With the help of genetics - I always had a fast metabolism and despite a very impressive pizza and massive sugar intake, gained weight only gradually - I have lost a lot of weight very quickly indeed.

My co-workers have generally been quite supportive. A few started on Atkins themselves after I had been on it for a few weeks! I have had one person at work whom I don't regularly see ask me whether I had had an illness! My girlfriend is jealous but won't admit it.

I have had quite a few negative comments about the restrictive nature of the diet, but stuff that. My carb intake now is about 80grs a day, and its all I can do to eat that without resorting to bread! Sure, I'm still eating a little more fat than I would like, but that will end soon, and then begins the hard part: proving wrong those who say I'll gain it all again.
      Born 1967. 6' 1". Male.

Started Atkins 28th April, at 216 pounds. Met goal weight on 9th July, at 176 pounds. New goal is to become trimmer without losing weight.

          Nothing.

Only one of my drs has noticed/commented and been positive about me doing Atkins.

My sister lives in another state and I keep her updated and she is supportive though I also know she isn't a fan of Atkins.

Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

I have a friend who is completely unsupportive and a stuck up know-it-all. I snapped at him the other day because he is one of the few people who knows about my problems with food and my Bulimic/control issues, but he continued to do things to discourage me and sat on my computer searching up things to demotivate me and always calls it the 'Fatkins' diet.
On top of all this, he's said things like "All you need to do is eat less" when he knows full well I've gone well over a week drinking nothing but diet sodas, and even worse, still purging THAT.

Thankfully I feel I'm better than that now and with myself through some inward journies, and I have support from my mother who has started with me (she only needs to lose a couple of lbs, but it helps not having the carbs in the house.) and my favourite Auntie who introduced us both to this fantastic WOL.

Oh, and my dad is great because he supports me in everything anyway. (:

Not to mention all of you who are incredibly supportive.

            Goals:

100oz water per day for the July challenge.
            First weight goal: 182lbs/13st

It's okay, the more opposition I have the more determined I sometimes find myself. I take the compliments as encouragement, and I take the put downs as even more of a reason to keep on going.

If I ever get to that point... a wrinkly-skinned, middle aged woman might not get many whistles. Ha ha! Hopefully not gain all my weight back to hide. This is an emotional journey almost more than a weight loss one.

Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

                      I LOVE this thread.

I'm very fortunate to have tons of support from most friends, family, co-workers and husband.

My parents and I did Atkins 3 years ago. They were wise enough to maintain their loss. I wasn't. So, they're very supportive. Even though they eat a lot more carbs than I do at this point, they've been very careful at family events -- father's day, birthdays, etc -- at making sure there's plenty of low carb food around. For Father's Day they made pork loins, crab legs and Steak!! Overkill, but I appreciated it. And my mom calls me skinny every time she sees me, and I'm only down about 10-12lbs. Haven't weighed lately.

My boss told me last week that I looked like I'd been losing weight, and that was nice to hear.

The biggest challenge with friends -- and I'm going to face that one head on today, July4 -- is they don't understand why I can't have a few drinks. Ugh. They're always trying to push booze on me. I know booze isn't absolutely forbidden, but even one or two drinks may weaken my resolve for other foods, and I just left induction a week ago. And I'm not ready to risk it.

In laws tell me this WOL is very dangerous and that I could have a heart attack. A few weeks ago at nieces birthday, I actually ate some fruit, because they scared me so bad. But then I thought about it: I'm eating protein and vegetables and drinking tons of water. On the off chance this diet is somehow "unhealthy" it's no more unhealthy than the way I ate before -- tons of diet soda, sweets and very few vegetables.

And then husband -- he's supportive of my efforts, but he doesn't understand this WOL. He's been a little brainwashed about low fat eating, so occassionally he tries to fix me something that I try to explain doesn't work on my diet. (Like rice or corn.) but he doesn't nag me about it. He truly wants me to be happy and when he brings me rice or corn, I know he's trying. They seem like such healthy foods! And maybe they are for some people, but not for me right now.

Anyway, he's one of those people who can literally eat everything on the Long John Silvers menu for lunch everyday and not gain an ounce. So, I forgive him for not "getting it."

This board is probably the most incredible support-system I've ever seen. So I thank you all for being such inspirations and I hope to return the favor one day soon as a major success story!
                      Sorry for the novel!

Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

                        Love this thread too!!!!!

Well, lets see...My partner is doing this with me. She has about 100+ to lose and I have around 85-90. She is very encouraging and its almost a contest now. If she loses 2 pounds I get upset that I've only lost 1 so I run to the gym and ramp up my cardio. If I've lost 2 pounds and she's only lost 1 she drinks more water and works out with me. Its fun and very supportive. She's always told me I was beautiful but we know we need to get healthy.

My mother, the first time I tried Atkins, was worried and begged me to try WW again but after a month and 15 pounds she shut up. She saw how clear my skin got, how healthy I was looking, and how much more energy I had and now she is very supportive of me going back on Atkins again. My father could care less, don't think he'd notice is I looked like Ghandi.

My sisters are...outwardly supportive but I think inwardly upset because I've always been the fat sister and now that we're all getting older I think it worries them to see that they've gained weight and I'm losing it. They say all the right things but I can see the truth in their eyes.

Our biggest opponents are my partner's parents. She comes from a very overweight Italian family and I think its a control issue and envy issue. They don't say a word when she loses weight but torment her when she gains. They are all bigger than her so I keep telling her its jealousy, but its hard for her to hear it. I keep reminding her that when she reaches her goals and we are finally fit, fabulous, and healthy it will all be worth it. I tell her on a regular basis how great she is looking, because she is!! I'm so proud of her, and if she is even half as proud of me than I'm one incredibly lucky girl.

I have not told anyone that I'm doing Atkins, and really I will not have to say anything about it because in the last year I have already lost weight, but that was from running 4 times a week, so I'm sure most people will think that's how I'm doing it.

I live alone so no one really has any idea how I eat, and really I could careless what people think. Of course I still always get the "you don't need to lose any more weight" but at the end of the day I need to feel happy in my own skin.

I've only lost about 25 pounds, but my husband said the sweetest thing today not even trying to. He had folded a couple of loads of laundry while I took the kids shopping. When we came back he told me what he had done and that he had folded several pairs of my pants and put them in the back of the closet because he was sure they were way too big for me now. Sometimes just the little things mean as much as the intentional compliments.

Re: What are your spouses/partners/friends saying?

Well my husband was supportive when it was just "I am cutting back on carbs and cutting out sugar" but once he got my book that came in the mail (an Atkins book) he gave it to me and promptly told me that this diet will kill me. Nice...then I tried to explain it to him that he might be thinking of just the induction phase and that its a common misconception that that is the whole program and that I will be eating some carbs later on and in the meantime I am eating more healthy veggies and such than he does! He didn't want to hear it, said he already knows the whole program and knows all about it (even said his ex girlfriends mother was a nutritionist that taught classes in Atkins eating). My thoughts were, did you attend these classes and is her mother DEAD??? Geeeesh. Maybe after he sees more improvement and my healthy vitality improving he will come around but until then I have to deal with agreeing to disagree! He has even made me dinner - pasta w/meat sauce. Nice. I put the sauce and meat over cauliflower and he got all offended that I didn't eat the noodles. I told him, I am not eating that right now! I even went so far as to put some on my plate so he would leave me alone. Maybe he's just afraid I will look TOO good and he is the jealous type after all...who knows. Sure makes things tougher at home though! I think he just needs time to warm up to it or maybe he never will but either way, he cannot tell me what I can or cannot eat! However he has had to deal with my going through several diets over the years and watched me spend countless dollars on different plans. He just thinks this is another of my "fads" and will quit it soon. It's been two weeks now today and I am not stopping! I did Nutrisystem for 2 yrs and lost 60lbs and I am just tired of paying for pre-packaged food that won't get me to my goal and makes me hungry all the time. I am tired of low calorie diets and starving all the time. I am tired of not having energy to run like I like to and the fact that when I listen to my body on a low cal diet or low fat diet that I gain weight. When I listen to my hunger and fullness signals on Atkins, I lose weight! It's more natural and the food is more natural in my opinion. It just makes sense to me. I grew up not eating sugar or starch/flour and was very healthy and thin. What could be wrong with that? I certainly did not have deficiencies! My hair was not falling out! My hair fell out much more with the low cal/low fat plan and my skin would break out. My skin is clear now, my swelling in my feet and legs have gone AWAY completely and I am energetic enough to run faster than I even thought I could! I am not weak or lightheaded, I am happy and my moods are stable. You'd think he would like that...he admits he does like that and that I am looking good...after this he comes over and hugs me...I am so confused!!!

                                Life is better in motion!!!
New to Atkins but not new to dieting and happy I made the switch from lowcal/lowfat to low carb! I am not starving anymore!
