Re: Welcome to ADBB Sheila! Check out her site guys!

Like I stated it followed the plan strictly, I am well aware of the implications of eating processd cheeses and meat, as I said I am a physician. Please understand, I am not trying to say that this diet isn't good for some folks, I am just saying in my case even with following the diet strictly and slowing moving from induction to OWL eating mostly salads , lots and lots of greens and healthy fish chicken and lean meats. I also worked out religously for the entire time and still do weight lifing 3 x week and areobics 60 min 4 x week and lots of water!!
The "something else is wrong" that you refer to is a very strong family history and tendency toward heart disease. Some people can stay on Atkins and have a great cholesterol level, others like me need to restrict bad carbs, increase whole grain and veggie intake and count calories to see the weight come off.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear Atkins didn't work for you. I have a strong history of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. In fact, it's very rare in family to not die of diabetic complications, heart attack, or stroke.

I don't eat red meat and stick to the lean meats and healthy fats like olive oil. Also, since moving to OWL phase, I've added whole grains, some starchy veg, fruit, legumes, nuts and more veg to my diet. The only grain I cannot eat is wheat, because it aggravates my asthma and allergies.

I have found that I need to switch up my exercise routine every couple of months. Some fitness experts say that your body gets used to doing the same fitness routines to the point where it becomes too efficient and won't burn calories. I used to think that was alot of garbage, but it happens to me. So I have to change my exercise regimen.

Anyhow, what was your HDL like? Most people have decent HDLs on Atkins.

Seriously how do you know if it was effortless for her or not? Atkins certainly has been effortless for me, and rather than attack Sheila's words why not better elaborate what's been troubling you. I understand cholesterol is a concern for you, but I like Bren am wondering what they were before and after. Your HDL based upon the numbers are extremely high, and triglycerides/HDL ratios are indeed pretty good.

Have you read the Cholesterol Con by Anthony Colpo? Have you tested what type of LDL you have? I would investigate these things before stopping what is a very healthy way of eating. Exactly what can't you eat in maintenance that you feel a healthy person should be eating?

No disrepect meant here, seeing that you are a doctor and all..
But my doctor is the one that advised me to pursue Atkins. And when I asked him questions ABOUT Atkins, he had no clue how to do it.

Well, my total cholesterol is 256!!! My LDL 166 and triglycerides 81 so I have been off Atkins since the first of August and I have lost 8 pounds keeping a food journal, excercising daily and counting calories. I have a very positive family history of heart disease,. I just don't think this diet is for everyone,. especially those with strong family histories of heart disease etc.. When people show a cholesterol level on their web site it does'nt prove or disprove anything. Cholesterol levels are very very individual and genetic dependent . I have patients who exercise, eat low fat, low cholesterol and what not and still have heart attacks. Oh, yeah I lost 17 pounds since December but at what cost, I will never know. I am sorry it didn't work for me but for those it does without the side effects, I say whatever works for them. Kudos!!

Seems for a doctor you are not current on not only the latest version of Atkins but cholesterol health issues
based on the forumla for calculating HDL which is total- LDL- 0.2TG your HDL is 73.8 very healthy and using the ration of total to HDL which cardiologists love you have a very very healthy 3.47 with the acceptable range
                  l being 3-5.
Im curious as a doctor wanting to know how things stood why didn't you have a complete cholesterol panel done and check your VLDLs as those are the currently thought to be dangerous cholesterol patricles.

you don't seem to be current on the Atkins plan either as lots and lots of greens isn't Atkins and would only be consumed during the 14 day induction phase. Based on the latest version of the plan from 2002 you should have added back in a controlled manner healthy low GI veggies fruits and grains too in the second phase know as OWL. most folk in the premaintnenance and goalie phases are having 6-8 cups of veggies/fruits a day. Maybe if you had followed the correct plan your LDL would be lower and your mind eased some.

                  As to this statement

lets look at the facts as you presented them to us
1)you arrive for the first time on our Atkins site.
                  2) you do not introduce yourself nor do you podst in the health topics about your cholesterol concerns
                  3) you use the search feature to search out Sheila We members know this because of the last date posting for the topic before you was May 05 and those dates are 27 pages back in the topics where this topic is found
                  4) you don't like something you read on her website so rather then discuss it with her and have her show you how you misread the words on the page you use your misread sentnaces quoted out of context to basically call her a liar on our site.
                  5) you restate your view again accusing her of lying in your second post on our site.

see anything suppessious there? we members sure did and alerted the admins about this issue. They came and tried to work with you to allow you to disprove our suspessions but you keep getting yourself in deeper and deeper.
BTW with your LDL so high as a doctor did you do the follow up medivcal testing to rule out the medicval conditions that can cause this other then diet like hypothyroid?????

also Atkins isn't an on again off again program as Dr Atkins points out so well in DANDR and every time you go off of plan you lose the health benefits of lower cholesterol and stable blood sugars.

so now you know why ADBB members are reacting to your statement and making you defend your actions.
