Re: I found this - very interesting read

Yeah for sure. I really think it's about eating healthy and making good choices when it comes to food. Too much of anything can't be good. However, induction is important I think. I really think Atkins nailed it here. I read the book twice and I think the first couple of weeks is to get you back on track and get rid of sugar cravings. Not so much the carbs but the sugar it turns into.

After two weeks I plan to slowly add more items to my meals and for sure allow myself healthy snacks like fruits that are organic.

I am drinking about two gallons a day. Should that be ok? I did have a bad kidney infection last year.

I think the induction is a way of saying "take time out from eating sugars, refined and processed foods and begin to slowly reintroduce nutrional foods like trim meats, nuts, fruits and veggies."

2 gallons eh? thats about 240oz...Thats alright if you can drink all that lol

Whats your activity like? If its high...then that would validate so much, but you gotta be carefull by drinking to much to fast.

you will mess with your electrolytes...

eh seesh...this is all so complicated!

I kind of feel like you are attacking me but not sure why you would be. Are you upset that I posted an article? For a new beginner with a lot of questions I was hoping for some positive information in a non-cynical and useful way.

When you say "Bingo" you act like I have not done my homework or that I am ignorant myself. Nah, not at all. I took a lot of time researching Atkins vs. South Beach and unlike many of the people that go on diets and use them to only loose weight, I couldn't be further from that type of mind set.

As for the article, it's definately an opinion. You know the old saying "opinions are like ******** everybody has one.

Exactly what Atkins is all about
After 2 weeks induction we move on to OWL and reintroduce the 'healthy ' food in the order Dr Atkins suggested - more veggies, more and different dairy, nuts and seeds, some fruits and so on up the rungs ending with whole grains if our bodies can tolerate them.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I really found the diabetes statement hilarious. Low-carb has always been a reliable treatment for diabetes, why would it cause diabetes? Out of control blood sugar is what happens when a person develops Type 2 diabetes. Gosh, don't you have to eat sugar to get out of control blood sugar?!

Happierme, believe me sweety, I am not attacking you in anyway, I was upset at what the article said. When I said bingo, It was really my way of nodding my head and agreeing with what you were saying, but since you can't see me, it kinda got lost in translation.

Thanks fightingthefight. I have lost 3 pounds in two days, what other diet does that? It's all good and I feel good. Time to warm up the pan for some steak and it's only 10 a.m. my time. I am a natural meat eater, love it. I can never get enough of it so this is a breeze for me. I never was a huge carbo person I thought but now that I am doing this I see that I was.

Well, here is my two cents....I went on a very low fat diet about 10 years ago and lost 82 pounds, but I was sooo hungry all the time! I was starving! I kept the weight off for about 10 minutes. I have been on Atkins since 2/22/05, I have lost 40 pounds and I have never been hungry! Everyone tells me that I am emotionally much more stable and happier than I used to be and my bood pressure went from 140/110 to 114/80. My cholesterol is lower, I have tons of energy. I walk 3-4 miles everyday, do upper and lower weight lifting and do 45 minutes of water aerobics 4 times a week! Did your friend really follow Atkins or did she do some weird version of Atkins? Did she drink at least 32 oz of water a day? I drink around 100 oz a day. It's up to you to decide what to do, but I would ask your friend some questions before you give up on this WOE.

You know what's funny about that article? A lot of the "quotes" from the book are new to me . . . . and I've read the book several times! It's almost as if the person writing this article is basing his judgement on the hearsay and gossip about the Atkins diet. In one paragraph, for example, he says something about people being "forced to eat grease" on Induction or something along those lines. Hmm, must have missed that part of the book when I was reading the parts about three cups of veggies a day, and avoiding processed foods, and drinking water instead of soda.

It's like the people I work with who tell me that Atkins just can't be healthy because it's just wrong to eat 10 steaks a day or a pound of bacon in a sitting. Or that I'll never stick with Atkins because it's impossible to swear off all fruit and veggies for the rest of my life.

Okay, everybody take a deep breath and say it with me: "Read the book. Read the book. Read the book."

Don't let this article get your knickers in a twist.

This is an old website and if you look around it, you'll see that its sponsor are our friends at PETA or their front, Physicians for Responsible Medicine.

Oh yeah and about their diabetes claims....in the next week or so, I'll be posting a new book report on my personal website about low carb diets and diabetes.
