  • Diet Coke with Splenda

    Hi,

I'm trying Atkins (again) looking to lose about 60 or 70 pounds. I really have to lose the weight, because I gained a rapid amount in the last few months. So I'm starting induction again.

My question is regarding Diet Coke with Splenda. I picked some up, but I don't know whether its allowed on induction really, and, if so, how much I could have? The carb content is 0 according to the label, but I read different things on this board.

    Advisement?

    Re: Diet Coke with Splenda

My advice is to not drink it. I found that cutting out caffeine made a drastic difference when I was on induction.

As has been said many times before on this board.

If it ain't on the Induction list.......... you can't have it.........

Do yourself a favor and try and get off the soft drink habit, especially during induction. Drink water and decaf tea if you must.

I had a 10-15 can a day habit and it took Atkins to finally stop it. Now I drink just water and tea. I've had a few Diet Cokes here and there, but it's pretty rare. I drink so much more water this way.

          Re: Diet Coke with Splenda

          Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day, including:

          Filtered water
          Mineral water
          Spring water
          Tap water
Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
          Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carbohydrate content)
          Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.
So if you're caffeine dependent, ie you "need" to have caffeine to function, stay awake, etc., you should avoid it per Dr. Atkins.

Really, for health reasons, anything that is as processed as Diet Coke is, is best not had. I know it's just the yummiest thing I've ever had the pleasure of drinking in MY entire life, but still, the splendas could adversely affect weight loss and make you hungry, even if studies haven't caught up to what happens to some people yet. I know Aspartame stalls some, causes blood sugar instability, et al, and Diet Coke isn't carb-free, due to the caramel coloring. It's .1 carbs per 8 ounce serving or thereabouts.

Even though it is allowed...and should you choose to not follow the advise above about doing without..remember you are limited to your Splenda amount per day...I think it is 3 servings. Good luck with your decision!

                Re: Diet Coke with Splenda

as an ex diet coke addict IMHO Diet Coke in any form is EVIL. I just got thru my 90 days w/o the evil juice.

I suggest that you TRY this WOE without it and then with it and see if it stalls you.

If you MUST do DC, remember that a "serving" is 8 ozs, which makes can 1.5 servings.

I went from 6-9 cans a day to a gallon of water instead and I feel much better and clearer.

and...GOOD LUCK regardless of what you decide!

I dunno if its a midwest thing but we have Diet Rite, it is Caffeine free, sodium free, and zero carbs, sweetened with splenda. Its awesome. Comes in several good flavors i prefer black cherry and strawberry kiwi. Might try checking your stores for it, but atleast I have it in Nebraska!!

                    Re: Diet Coke with Splenda

Well, it seems Diet Coke is considered the product of the devil on this board. that's cool, though. I've stayed away from it so far but only because I haven't been sure about it. I'll take your guys advice about it being satan juice under advisement.

I don't have a caffeine dependence. I just, frankly, don't care much for the taste of water. That's my big problem. I don't know why, but sometimes, the taste of water actually makes me gag. I'm not using tap water. The only time I find water tasty is when it is chilled. Then I love it...but how does one keep water chilled?

I used to get Diet Rite and may do so again. I'm not sure really. I guess the caffeine issue is one I'll try and avoid, but only because I don't care much for being wired. I have enough trouble sleeping (and am already experiencing sleep difficulties, I think, due to induction). In your opinions, would you recommend caffeine-free Diet Rite Sodas over Diet Coke with Splenda.

Further, how many net carbs should I count per serving of either? The label says 0 for both, but is there a net carb count I'm not seeing? Also, I'm told that I can only have 3 servings of Splenda. Does that mean three servings of the soda, or three servings of the Splenda in the drink?

I'll be honest, I probably won't touch either on induction, but I woud like to know the answeres to these questions, as they came up last time I was on Atkins and I never quite found an answer. Thanks for your help.

My municipal water tastes bad and has a bad smell too. So I use a filter pitcher to filter out all the excess chlorine and stuff in it. I keep the filter pitcher in the frig. At work and at home, I have an insulated coffee carafe that holds about 2 quarts (32 ounces). So I pour the refrigerator cold water into that. I also use ice cubes if I want to keep it really cold.

If you don't have an insulated coffee carafe, you can buy thermos container or one of those insulated coffee mugs.

I once e-mailed the Atkins Center (shortly after Dr. Atkins died) and asked that question: how do you count the carbs in non-water beverages? The reply I got was that with the additives ("caramel coloring", "natural flavorings", etc.) the carb count can be anywhere from 0.1 to 0.9999, so they recommended that 1 serving be counted as 1 net carb.

I don't know what your diet consisted of before atkins, but if it was carb and sugar loaded, theres a good chance that your tasted buds have been damaged. It happened to me and others, after we cut out processed junk and sugar, our taste buds come back and you actually do enjoy water and your body will try to make you avoid any sweet drinks.

Try adding a drop of oregano oil to your water. The spicy flavor, coupled with Atkins' own approval of the nutrient, are the reason I use it... and it does give water a yummy flavor. It does take a little getting used to, though!

I found the Diet Rite in strawberry/Kiwi Flavor, it's not bad. I wish I could find the black cherry, I love black cherry.

I use the Diet Rite Cola to drink my rum with when we have parties at my house. It's not bad.

I personally would say Diet Rite over Diet Coke with splenda simply for the fact Diet Rite is caffeine free and sodium free. (sodium helps hold in water weight)
