  • What is the problem?? Atkins is making me fatter!!!

    I'm gaining weight on this diet!!!

    I got on the scale this morning and it went up by 3 pounds.

    I'm eating right, no carbs at all, except for my sugarless gum.
    I'm not drinking a gallon of water but I'm drinking it. I don't understand???
    Start: October 17, 2005
    breaking the ice goal: 15 lbs. lost for 195 lbs.XXX
    whoa!! what a difference goal: 20 lbs. more to go for 175 lbs.
    you look good goal: 20 lbs. more to go for 155 lbs.
    ultimate goal: 35 lbs. more to go for 120 lbs.

    No carbs? Can you post a sample of one of your daily menus? Include portion size if you can.

      Weight changes so many times per day that I'd get dizzy if I hadn't put my scale away.

      Water retention can change your bodyweight between 1-8 pounds in a single day. In a single day! It is easy to eat too much sodium on this diet, too, and we have to account for our menstraul periods and that weight gain due to water retention there as well. There are a billion reasons you could be retaining water: it goes away however. Stick with it!

        I agree, the best way for anyone to evaluate your problem is to post menus for the last couple of days..or let us know what a typical menu is for you.

        You shouldn't have no carbs, if you do then you're not eating your veggies.

          Amount/Food Name
          2 Hot Links
          8 T.Salsa
          1 T. Cream Cheese
          18 T. Land O Lakes Whipped Heavy Cream in can
          3 sticks of Extra Sugarfree gum
          3 medium pcs. of Chicken: Drumstick, Wing, & Thigh (all roasted)
          1.25 ozs. Chicken Liver (roasted)
          1 Chicken Gizzard (roasted)
          1 oz. Monterey Pepper-Jack Cheese.

          Total: 1,129 Calories/80 g. fat (64%)/19 g. carbs (7%)/75 g. protein. (28%)/6 g. alcohol (4%)

            Sugar-Free gum has aspartame and is know to stall about 20% of people who use it.

            there is a lot of sodium in your menu

            18 Tbsp whipping cream? Did you mean 1?

              The Sugarfree gum can stall me?? Oh No!!! Why me?! I chewed some
              this morning.

              Okay the sodium, what can I do about that? I try not to add much salt on my food.

              18 T. of Canned Whipped Heavy Cream is correct, lol I got carried away, I just loooove sugar/sweets.

                LOL Diva! If you crave sugars that's all the reason to totally nix them these first 2 weeks. The more it hurts the more you know you shouldn't be having them. Seriously. The worse an addiction, the harder it is to get away from it.

                You like to chew gum? That is an oral fixation and a tough one to overcome. Try chewing only 1/2 a stick at a time rather than a whole one. Gradually go down from there, or replace with new gratification, like sipping/drinking cold water.

                To trim salts, you might look at trimming/removing processed foods like the sausage.

                  In Atkins' books there are a list of things to run through when that happens. Aspartame, as cleochatra noted can inhibit weightloss along with anything that has caffeine in it (not sure if you're a tea/coffee drinker). Additionally, if you let yourself become hungry AT ALL, it can prevent weight loss. Atkins recommended to go without eating for no more than 6 hours as the idea is to feed your body enough fats of ten enopugh to get it to kick over from metabolizing carbs for energy to using your own fat, thus melting it away. Above all, STICK WITH IT!!! I don't know how much weight you have to lose but the closer you get to your goal - especially the last 15lbs - it can become more difficult. I hope this helps!!!!

                    Now all I have to do is start all over tomorrow.

                    I messed up with the gum for the day.

                    I'm in moderate ketosis.

                    I feel like pigging out and starting over tomorrow.

                    But, Cleo I felt like a junkie without the sugar: Serious mood swings, irritable to no end, tripping sort of paranoid, my body will shake and twitch!!

                    What can I do?

                      NO. Don't start over tomorrow! This isn't Mulligans. Just keep plugging along today. Life is the constant process of learning something new, saying, "Aha! But will it make my butt look big!" and moving forward. So just keep moving forward.


                      As for being cranky--do you want cranky? Come to my house right now. I ate a bunch of bad things Sunday night and I'm de-toxing... and my husband is afraid to come home. He knows. He'll tell you.

                      That's cranky.

                      It is temporary. In the mean time,

                      1) write a letter to someone who makes you mad that you never intend to send. Just let it all hang out

                      2) Pop the heads off of dandelions outside and enjoy it.

                      3) Draw a picture of someone you dislike and give it a big nose and googly eyes. Then jump up and down on it.

                      4) Make really mad faces in the mirror in the bathroom

                          NO! Don't pig out if you're in moderate ketosis! The, oh well, I blew it today might as well eat what I want is the key to misfortune! It can lead to DAYS of trying to get back on track....However, I have found that when getting back into induction mode, if I do it strictly for the first two days then on the third, when I can't stand it anymore and ONLY in the evening will I treat myself to a chocolate shake (small or 1/2 normal serving). This way of weening myself seems to work pretty well as I take in a little bit of sugar, the comfort of chocolate and the fullness of fat and sleep through the repurcussion and my body seems to slink right into ketosis within the next day without the cravings never to look back. Granted, I just blew the "progress" I had just made being a few days in, but it seems to make the next few days more bearable and painless because I didn't OVERLOAD and my body was able to process the excess carbs through the night and embrace the fat content of the shake to trigger my fat burning switch. Try to stick with doing it by the book as much as you can...you will not regret it and WILL see results.

                            Okay, too late.

                            I'm not going to pig out, but I did have some nachos for breakfast, which made me go to the bathroom, lol. That was a great thing!!

                            I also had a bowl of cereal with my kids "real" canned whipped cream, yummy. I wanted something sweet to drink but they drank up all of the Sunny Delight.

                            I will start tomorrow, I need to learn how to eat right.

                            How long will it take before the cravings stop when I start over tomorrow, going cold turkey.

                              Well, if you start RIGHT NOW, you'll be cravings-free in 2 days...if you keep putting off your starting time it'll be 48 hours from then.

                              So which will it be?

                              48 hours from this very minute, which knocks off a full 18 hours, or are you going to prolong the agony? Me, I'm about about less agony.
