    Re: Salad dressing

You crack me up! FYI - Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing packet is made up of seasonings and preservatives. The bottled stuff is the EXACT SAME THING but they add vinegar. KRAFT Ranch Salad dressing has been mentioned to be ok on induction and one of the major ingrediets is sugar amongst other unpronouncable things. Only the zealots among us need to split hairs on that one. Main ingredient in cheese? Milk . Store bought is OK - as long as one doesn't make one's own lest they be as much of a renegade as I!

Good suggestion, Barbie-doll - that is the way to go. Adapt and survive - use water to make the cream the needed consistency if you are not yet on the dairy rung !!

      Re: Salad dressing

      Moochie,

I am not too technical on the dressing thing...I just stick to Hidden Valley Ranch from the store, all mixed and ready to go and call it done. I count the carbs and let it taste yummy.

I did try a dressing before I went on the WOE that I made up with some garlic powder, soy sauce, sesame oil and rice wine vinegar and it was yummy. Do you think that would be induction ok?

And I agree... err on the side of caution with diluting the heavy cream. You'll get a richer yummier dressing if you do that anyway, so don't bother with the milk.

        Hey Slim,

Ranch might be okay for some, but for Induction, the book advises no added sugars and no more than 2 carbs per serving (page 127 if interested). Hidden Valley does have sugar, 1 gram per serving. So, for clean induction it's probably not the best choice.

I'm not even getting into the product comparison comments, because I don't have the dry package, oh well!

And about the milk/cheese issue...didn't we have this same 'discussion' about ice cream...hummm?

              Slimin,

I will let you take many things away from me, but you will have to pry the mozzarella string cheese from my fat little dead fingers to get it. Lord, I didn't realize how much I loved cheese.

OK - everyone's "theories" aside (including mine). The official statement from DANDR 2002 under the heading "Herbs" found in the chapter "And Away You Go: The Induction Phase" and found just before the heading "Fats & Oils" it says, and I quote: "For salad dressing use oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than 2 carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine." Additionally, in the chapter "A Regimen to Jump Start Weight Loss" where it recaps rules for induction and adds some detail, the only dressings named to be avoided are Thousand Island and French Dressing.

Everyone has to use the same info. and interpret for themselves what that means in their induction.

Soy sauce is a grey area, you're going to get differing opinions on whether it's Induction friendly, but I'm thinking if it's in a salad dressing, and you aren't bathing in it, it should be fine. The sodium content needs to be considered, but if we're talking a few TBS of this dressing on a salad, I don't think it's going to be a huge issue.

I think I used like 1 or 2 T. of soy, 3 of rice wine vinegar, and 3 of oil, dash of garlicand I might have thrown in a dash of grated ginger. It was yummy on cucumbers.

You pretty much quoted my point. To add: Atkins is fairly flexible about dressing, per the guidlines outlined above. No reason to raise cortisol levels over it - whatever dressing you choose that falls within the above guidelines should be fine (but don't bathe in it ).

Cheese might be made from milk, but it's a different product. During the cheese making process the sugars are removed and all that remains is the protein and fat. So, it's completely different than mixing a 1/2 cup of milk to something because that won't change the composition of the milk. http://park.org/Netherlands/pavilion...e/making2.html

Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than 2 carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.
Powdered dressing mixes typically contain sugar (dextrose, corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, lactose, etc.) so they don't satisfy the Salad dressing rule. The same applies to many of the prepared dressings.

And finally there are these Rules of Induction:
                              4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter.
                              5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.

Actually, if you decide to do a search on this website, there are many confirmations from experienced ones and moderator's that have never batted an eye at Ranch or Blue Cheese dressings before in the Review My Menu and both Induction Forums. Even if the ones with sugar were dutifully avoided, they all are made with milk or buttermilk - just because I so happened to point it out doesn't really change anything. I applaude those who have gone through induction super squeaky clean w/o either dressing.
