  • Jicama recipes for induction

I saw reference to jicama in a couple of other threads, went shopping last night and happened to see them in Safeway and grabbed one.

Anyone have some good induction recipes for jicama? I've looked in the the recipe threads but the recipes I've found seem to be for maintenance.

    Thanks guys!

well you can just peel it and eat it I love eating it as a chunk like a juice apple.
you can use it for raw vegies for dipping. as the bread for a chicken or ham salad sandwich yum

you can make Brook's mock baked apples.
you can shred it and make slaw
you can cook it as a veggie in your stew
you can shred it and cook it like hashbrowns

it will absorb whatever you cook it in's flavor

the only thing you can't do is get the jicama to get soft ;(

Thanks 2big! It seems it's a pretty flexible veggie...gotta love that

And yeah, I was reading in another thread about how it won't get soft....no biggy....a little crunch is never a bad thing

      Thanks for the ideas!

They go bad really fast. So if you are not going to use if soon, peel it and slice it and put it in the frig covered with water in a container. It will last a long time that way.
I eat it raw, or dice it and make home fries. But 2big is right, they don't get soft and take a while to brown. I love it though! Can't find it anywhere now!

Here, I'll show you a pic!
Well, I can't find the one I wanted to show you but here is some "jicama fries" with a breakfast. I do them in the oven usually, with a stick of butter and throw in some onion and garlic. Takes about an hour at 350?

I imagine that here the jicamas are more fresh, they last more than a week out of the fridge without peeling them.

I wish mine did Even in the fridge they only last a day or two after buying them. If I peel them and chop them right away they'll last almost a week.

Has anyone tried to freeze jicama, or does anyone have a foodsaver they've used on it? I wonder if cutting it then sucking all the air out of the bag would extend the life.

One of my favorite ways of eating it is plain, but for a treat I'll sprinkle some splenda and cinnamon on it!

There are plenty of Induction safe jicama recipes. Use the search feature to find them. I'm quite certain I have a jicama slaw recipe posted in the Side Dishes forum.

Jicamas are GRAET!! I just tried them for the 1st time 2 days ago....It taste like an apple but with a little turnip or potato kinda flavor which is easy to get out. I guess because it grows in the ground i see most things that grow full or partially underground have this taste. Its amazing how my tastebuds pick up so muxh more now that i am on atkins!!! Try the jicama with butter ans splenda...to DIE for!! Most jicama will be a little crunchy though like an apples texture!! Its great!!

For those of you who haven't purchased a jicama yet, the brown/tan skin should be free of lumps, dents and black spots. The last few I have seen in the store lately are well past their prime. Then you peel the skin off and eat it. It tastes like a non sweet apple more than a turnip I would think.

I just cut it up in sticks and bag in in the refrig. Just like celery sticks. I have a little snack of it, if i need some thing to crunch on.
Jicama is one of my favorite new veggies.

That's all we have here lately too but I've been gambling and buying firm ones (I'm that addicted to them). Most of the time the flesh is still white and sweet although a few times the flesh was starting to turn brown. If you cut one open and it has a brownish tinge instead of being white inside, it's too old. Yucky pooooo.
