I just started on Atkins on the 1st, and I had diarrhea the first week. I was drinking lots of water, and mostly eating veggies and meat. I, too, thought my body might be purging itself of old carbs or something. Anyway, it disappeared on its own and now I'm fine. It last for about three days with me.

Weird how your body doesn't know how to react if you suddenly start eating healthy! LOL

Actually it does. You have a whole set of various bacteria in your bowels which are very busy processing carby foods, and some not so nice stuff which lives on carbs, too. When you stop eating junk carbs, several of these bacteria die. So your body does get rid of some of the old stuff which isn't needed or wasn't helpful in the first place. The new mix of bacteria needs some time to adjust and grow.

This is one of the reasons why some poeple react strongly to carby foods such as potatoes ore wheat after some time on Atkins, even when they had no problms with these foods before. And for some people the carbs buffer reactions to other foods they hadn't noticed, but which come up when your body isn't busy anymore with fighting carbs and what Ray Audette calls 'alien proteins', the proteins in wheat, for example, which are a common allergy trigger for many people.

So I had the same problem the first time I did Atkins. I had weight loss success but my sore tushy didn't exactly encourage me to continue. It seemed like my body was telling me I should quit this low carb thing. I am trying Atkins again and this time I'm going to try to give it a month to see if it goes away. If it doesn't then this WOL, I guess is just not for me.
