  • drinking and ketosis

I went out last night with my hubby and some friends and had quite a few drinks (bacardi and diet-low on the carb scale). This morning I checked to see if I was still in ketosis- and I was! Does this make sense? I know it's not induction friendly. But I like the idea that I could go on extended induction and still go out once in awhile without screwing up my state of ketosis. Could this be too good to be true? I only have the book Atkins Essentials which really only deals with the basic concepts of induction. Thanks

Get yourself the 2002 DANDR!!!!! Way better investment then the ketosticks, in my humble opinion. The thing with alcohol is that your body will burn it first as a fuel. So, during that time, you're not burning fat. If you want to drink alcohol, why not move through OWL? It does stand for ongoing weight loss! Going through all the stages of Atkins is important in order to set us up for lifelong success. 2bigs analogy of building a house is awesome. Induction sets the foundation, the other stages help complete a sound house.

      It makes perfect sense....

Fats are broken down into 3 ketone bodies. The ketostix test for only 1 of the 3---acetoacetic acid.

For your body to get rid of alcohol, it has to break it down into by-products. One of those by-products is acetic acid.

The acetic acid can give a false positive on the ketostix. Which is why it's very possible to test "positive" on the ketostix.

The other thing too is that our bodies will break down alcohol before it breaks down carbs, fat and protein. But our bodies don't stop carb, fat and protein metabolism while it is getting rid of the alcohol. Our bodies will will metabolize these things and store them for later use. The storage form of carbs, fats and proteins are glycogen or more body fat.
