  • Help - Running and Induction

I've been on induction for the last week totally by the book. I am also in the process of training for a half marathon. So far, so good - about 10 pounds lost!! Yeah! But here is my problem, when I went out for my long run on Saturday, I hit a wall REALLY early and the rest of the day wasn't pretty. I couldn't even keep anything in my stomach until late afternoon. I'm being careful to make sure I do get my 20 carbs in, mainly from the salad veggies but also typically have a little brocolli, spinach or asparagus as well, usually about 1/2 a cup.

I typically don't eat before a long run because it makes me sick, but I got sick anyways. Since I haven't really changed anything with training, I was thinking perhaps it was my diet and I should alter something (like when I eat what) to help me get through my runs. I was going to do an extended induction, but don't want another day like Saturday.

Are there any other runners out there who went through induction while running over 20 miles per week. Maybe it's just me, but it's really been putting me through the ringer and challenging my running.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

I'm training for a half too, however, I started running a couple of months into my Atkins, so, no advice for you there. Could it be induction flu or is it only when you're running? I'd suggest moving to OWL right after the two week induction period. I'm sure one of our experts will have some great advice to give you. Congratulations on your success to date!

Thanks for the input on going to OWL and not doing extended induction. I don't think it's induction flu since I only got sick when running and my energy surge hit on day 4, this was day 6. I did Atkins before and once I got past those first few days I was doing great, but, I wasn't putting in nearly the miles I am now. I'll see how tonight's run goes, it's about 6 miles.

Maybe post this question on the Exercise forum too for more input

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Kt .. sorry I missed this thread .. KKAT send this to me so I could hopefully help you.

I didn't run during induction, but I was speed walking (a mile in about 13 minutes). No problems for me at that time, but I never did it on an empty stomach. That's probably why you hit the dreaded wall .. you simply ran out of fuel.

I would definitely eat at least 2 hours before attempting to run. And your meal should incorporate alot of fat and protein. The fat will give you the energy and the protein will give you the strength to do your running. Avoid eating the higher fiber veggies before running as they can upset your stomach and cause you to have gastrointestinal issues (a runner's nightmare).

I would definitely keep running .. perhaps not as long of runs until you are into OWL and are eating a wider variety of foods and higher carbs.

Run slow; don't try and set speed goals at this point. By running slow, I suggest a 13-15 minute per mile pace. Yes, it will feel like your crawling at first, but that's okay. Speed comes with practice. You need to work on building your stamina and endurance and the best way to do that is by running slow.

Are you drinking water as you run? What about supplements, which ones are you taking? Are you sweating alot during your running? Hopefully you can find that SOBE SF drink and take that with you. If running becomes "too much", then walk for periods of time .. say 2 or 3 minutes until you catch your breath and feel like continuing.

But by all means, you MUST eat before you run in order to properly fuel your body for the rigorous workout. Just make sure you wait at least 1 hour and preferably 2 after eating to allow your food to digest before venturing out.

          Hope that helps!

Re: Help - Running and Induction

Betty - Thanks for the input, you were actually the one who advised me on the SF drink on the cool running board. I don't know about slowing down, I've been running on and off for about 10 years, and seriously again for close to a year, so I hate to change all of that. Trust me, it's not like I"m putting in 7 minute miles or anything, outside of speed work (which I didn't end up doing last week) I usually take my runs at a pretty easy pace for me.

I'll try eating beforehand, which may mean getting up in the middle of the night, I tend to run early on Saturday mornings.

            Thanks for the input!

I hear ya on the middle of the night thing .. I get up at 5:45 Saturdays to eat before my 7:00 a.m. runs. Its worth it though .. I'd never make 13-15 miles without FUEL!

Good luck! Hope you do well with some gas in your tank!!

Re: Help - Running and Induction

I was doing regular running on threadmill before I started on induction.
Saw some slow down during the induction and would get tired by 2/3rd of the run.I donot know if it was atkins induction or the less calories that was getting in.

                Started induction: 03/06/06
                Start weight: 219

Re: Help - Running and Induction

one thing your body is still adding to its fat burning equipment for the fueling system building more mitochondra in your cells adding more carier molecules acetyl L Cariteneine sp? which moves fatty acids across the mitochondrisa membranes for energy production and the needed muscles stores of fatty acids. it takes a while forthe humanbody to build this up as Kent can tell you. he did a lot of running on extended induction as didmany others but they built up to it as their body switched fueling systems.

your body will adapt and will get the stuff it needs to preform better. hang in there

                  Happy low carbing.

Thank you so much for all the encouragement and advice. Guess I just need to hang in there and it will get better. I'd like to stay on induction a while longer, I've still got 26-30 pounds to lose.

BTW - Any suggestions on what I can eat before a long run? An egg?

A couple of eggs and some bacon would be a good start. PROTEIN & FAT, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS!!

Re: Help - Running and Induction

with so few pounds to lose you would do beter to move to OWL after the 14 days of induction because you will be able to test the food rungs with the deep ketosis appetite suppression and many folk discover they actually do better losing on OWL lower rungs eating thenin extended induction eating.

I never eat before working out so I can't give you a good meal but you need to do it earlir as it will take longerto ger fuel from Atkins meals then from a sugar meal.
