  • Salad Dressings!

    Calling all experts!

I am on day 8 of induction - and I have been trying to do it as clean as possible. However, I am overly concerned with salad dressings. I can't enjoy a salad without one, yet they all seem to be the backdoor for hidden carbs to sneak through.

You see, even with my research I missed that balsamic vinegar was not an allowed food. I went 4 days with having it on my salads lunch & dinner before somebody clued me in to the fact that it had added sugar in it. So I stopped using balsamic vinegar and started looking for new salad dressings to replace it.

Which brings me to my concern. I have looked at all the "allowed" dressings, such as blue cheese, ranch, italian, etc. However, despite them being full fat & low carb (in other words, not the "lite" versions) they all list sugar as an ingredient. For example, Ken's Steakhouse Blue Cheese Salad Dressing is only 2 grams of carbs per serving, but it has sugar listed in its ingredients.

I am not beating myself up for having balsamic vinegar for a few days in the begining, but I don't want to repeat the mistake of having anything thats not on the "Allowed Foods List". I am trying to have a clean induction!

Soooo, any help pointing me in the right direction of what salad dressings are fine (Ken's Steakhouse Blue Cheese Dressing?) will be very appreciated!

Look in the produce section of your supermarket. You might be able to find Marie's salad dressing.

You can also make your own salad dressing, using oil and vinegar or lemon/lime juice too.

I like whisking dijon mustard while adding olive oil. It's good on meats, chicken and fish as well.

Also in the produce section...look for O'Charley's ranch. It's 2 carbs per serv. but no sugar. It's really good. Also some brands of Ceaser dressing has no added sugar and low carbs. I had to search awhile too.

You are right on the money with that one! One thing I was trying to do while searching for a new salad dressing was make my own. I don't know how to make dijon mustard, but this tastes pretty close.

I take mayonase, and add a little mustard, and a table spoon of plain vinegar. I also throw a dash of pepper. Mix it it up, and its tastes pretty good.

But not as good as as the dressings I was using - so I am still searching.

Try Paul Newman's Oil and Vinegar Dressing. It's yummy.... 1 carb per serving and NO sugar listed in the ingredients.

Just a caution about the dressings or any prepared dressing....the carb count is only accurate for the serving size listed on the bottle. So if your serving is really 5 of the bottle-listed servings, you need to count those extra carbs.

Website with a list of salad dressing recipes. Most of them can be altered to low carb. If you have a problem with altering them, post the question in the Food and Cooking Chat forum here.

Thanks Not2late! I always have that concern with everything. Its something I ignored in the past while trying to do this WOL, and it constantly did me in. This time around, I am VERY methodical about amounts when it comes to my servings of carbs (vegetables, salad, etc.)

And thanks to everybody who are anwering this post! I am definately stopping at the supermarket on the way home from work today to check out these salad dressing ideas!

Here in Florida they sell "Naturally Fresh" brand dressings in the produce section. They are easy to spot because they come in mason jars. My jar of Bleu Cheese Dressing says 0g total carb per serving (2Tbsp). (Sugar is listed on the ingredients list but it's a ways down the list.)

See, that is what keeps throwing me off. Its when they put sugar in the ingredients. I know that the further down the list an ingredient is, the less the amount of that ingredient is relative to the ones listed before it. BUT...how do we know whats ok and whats not?

0 grams of carbs in your Blue Cheese dressing suggests that the sugar in it is negligible, but Ken's Steakhouse Blue Cheese has 2 grams of carbs per serving, and also lists sugar as an ingredient. So then logic would suggest to stay away from Ken's Steakhouse Blue Cheese because those 2 grams could very well be coming from added sugar, right?

Malt vinegar? Not sure if I have ever come across that term before. I have been using "clear vinegar" (just plain vinegar), it has no carbs, sugars, or anything.

Yesterday I picked up some Newman's Own Oil & Vinegar Salad Dressing. It has one gram of Carbs per serving. Now, although it says this one gram is from sugar, there is no sugar listed in the ingredients. So I figure this means no sugar added, right? That makes it ok, right?

This may be venturing into "recepie forum" territory, but have you ever tried making egg salad with it? AMAZING!

                              Mash some hard boiled eggs,
Add just enough mayonaize to make it creamy
                              Add a dollup of mustard
And add a table spoon (or more if you want) of vinegar.
                              Salt & Pepper for spice.

Any idea about Red Wine Vinegar??
