  • A little confused here......

Hi Everyone! I'm brand new to this and don't want to blow it, but I'm worried I may have already! In one of the Atkins books it mentions that blue cheese salad dressing (2 tbsp) should be counted as 2.5 net carbs, however, the dressing I have has 0 carbs in it. How should I count this? Also, I know that to find the net carbs in any product, you should take the total carbs and subtract the grams of fiber from it to get the net. However, I grabbed an Atkins Advantage bar yesterday and happened to notice that the total carbs said 18 g and the fiber showed 4 g, so doing the math, that should be 14 net carbs (OUCH) versus the 3 net carbs it says on the front of the box. What am I missing?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I'm not sure where in the book you read the blue cheese dressing carbs. But the "salad dressing" rule is that you should not eat any salad dressing that has more than 2 net carbs and added sugar.

If your blue cheese dressing has "0" carbs for 2 tablespoons, then it's okay to count that 2 tablespoon serving as "0" carbs or 1 carb if you see that sugar is one of the first few ingredients.

    The bars......

Net carbs is total carbs - fiber grams - sugar alcohols.

The bars and many "low carb products" subtract allegedly "non-digestible" carbohydrates like some food starches, food gums, and bulking agents.

My advice is to avoid those products for the first 14 days of this diet. In the collective experience of this board, these products have a tendency to slow or stop weight loss in some people. The first 14 days of this diet are very important. So re-read chapters 12-13 to see just how important it is to maximize your results.

Thank you so much for helping me to figure this out! It was really bugging me! I have the "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" book and on page 496, under fats and oils, is where I found that I should count blue cheese dressing as 2.3. As for the bars, I didn't know that I was supposed to subtract sugar alcohols, too! It didn't say that in the other book I have (The Atkins Essentials, page 33). No wonder I was confused! Haha! Makes sense now! The box says that they are okay for induction, so every now and then if I'm out running around and don't have a chance to grab something, I'll carry one in my purse. I would rather go hungry though if it truly had 14 g of carbs!! Thanks again for helping me!

Bear in mind that not all recipes are created equal, including blue cheese dressing. If there's a label on the product use the carbs listed, read the ingredients and like not2late said, avoid the sugar alcohols and Atkins bars. You may also notice they contain nut flours - nuts are not allowed on induction.

How completely frustrating! Why would the boxes say that the bars are good for phase I induction when they're really NOT???? GRRRR!!! As if starting/learning something new like this isn't hard enough, now I'm not sure if I can even trust Atkins OWN products when they say they can be eaten for weight loss!! *Big Sigh* Thank you guys for helping me through the confusion! You'll be the reason I don't give up!

The carb counts for the dressings given in that section of the book, refer to the dressings in the book's recipe section.
