  • I Had A Terrible Day!

    Hi,

I was doing so well on Atkins, trying to go exactly by the book and to do everything exactly as I was supposed to and I really was doing okay but I had a horrible day today!

I didn't break down and eat any sweets or binge on chocolate or chips but I just didn't eat much.

I got up and had a decent breakfast of three hard boiled eggs and some brown and serve sausages and then we headed out to do some school shopping for my middle son who is going into 6th grade this year. The shopping trip was about an hour away and included a rather long and bumpy ferry ride as there were white caps on the lake. The mall was extremely packed as college starts tomorrow so the food court was hectic. I wasn't sure what to eat so I settled on some meat at the Chinese place. The meat wasn't just some skinless beef on a bamboo stick and that's all I could stomach.

Then I went to the hospital to see my Dad who just finished his last chemo treatments as he was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia about four months ago and he's in the hospital in the same town that we went school shopping in.

After we left there, we headed to Denny's (it was now about 7:15 P.M.) to have some dinner. There was nothing I wanted on the menu as most of the items seemed to be breaded with something or may have had added ingredients (like sugar) so I opted for something I knew would be safe. This turned out to be a Ham and Cheese Omelette with 4 sausage links. Needless to say, I didn't get a single vegetable in today. I was going to order broccoli or cauliflower but Denny's didn't have them on the menu so I settled.

I guess I just wasn't hungry but now I've went a day without veggies which I know isn't good at all.................

As you can see by my fitday journal, I didn't do well today. I guess I just wasn't in the mood to eat much. I hate the hospital, it's so stressful.....now I just feel terrible that I didn't have my veggies and I blew it for today.

devil, yeah, you shoulda had some veggies. But, I think you did okay considering the circumstances. Next time, plan in advance and take you an emergency pack. (Celery sticks, tuna in a pouch, mayo in packets, etc.)

Re: I Had A Terrible Day!

The only things they had on the menu for "side dishes" was mashed potatoes (with gravy), onion rings, stuffing (with gravy), corn, cole slaw (I worried about the sugar they may have added), french fries and cottage cheese.

I should have really planned ahead a bit better but the day was emotionally draining all the way around. School shopping should come with some sort of warning label for parents who don't like the droppy drawer syndrome the kids are wearing and seeing my Dad in the hospital is always very hard.

One good thing - I didn't break down and have nachos or french fries or a gooey chocolate desset, which is something I would normally have done as an emotional eater.

So what happens if you don't eat enough vegetables? Does it actually hurt your weight loss or is it just something that's supposed to get you fiber? You can take psyllium husks and get tons of fiber if you can't access vegetables for whatever reason.

Well, it's healthy to eat your veggies, but one day without veggies isn't bad! Don't beat yourself up over that, you had a rough day. What's MORE important than that is that you didn't binge on bad carbs...

You're doing fine, keep up the good work!

We've all had days when we should have planned better. Don't beat yourself up over it - just learn from it so that next time you won't have to do without veggies or other acceptable foods. This is a learning expreience for all of us -- and you did well with the choices you made.

Thanks everyone, you're all so sweet and helpful. I couldn't get through this without all the support and I had a much better day today with all your kind words. I beat myself up a little but the bruises will be gone by tomorrow

I'm having a bit of a problem with not feeling like eating, is that normal?

Re: I Had A Terrible Day!

There are soooo many bad things that you avoided though you should be proud that you still made good choices considering where you were at. I have to pretty much avoid eating out alltogether because my will power (depending on the place) is pathetic!
                So good for you!!
Also yeah I think its normal to have no appitite after a while. I have a heck of a time after the first couple weeks eating much at all, It mostly becomes a chore that I have to remind myself to do, like brushing my teeth or something! But at the same time you get a lot more done in the day because you arent wandering around the kitchen starving like you would be on another diet plan.

Seriously, a bad day would be if you had a handful of M&Ms . What you had was a GOOD day. You resisted the temptation of easy carbs and made the best of what you had. That's something to be proud of.

Re: I Had A Terrible Day!

I think you did great with the choices you did make versus the temptations you had in front of you! You didn't cheat with all that stress either, that's good!

I think we've all had days when we didn't get enough veggies in. Those times, I try to make sure I get more on the next day.

Also, a salad or tomatoes on the side would have been a possibility at Dennys too. Don't be afraid to ask what they might have available as options, as some times restaurants will accomodate you even if its not on the menu. A good tip can go a long way toward better options too. I used to be shy about asking, but nowadays, I'll always ask about good healthy alternatives when it comes to eating right. Thought I agree, Denny's doesn't really have the best low carb options.

Re: I Had A Terrible Day!

I agree with pstansel, you actually had a great day ,not a bad day. Emotional eaters such as ourselves automatically switch to 'comfort foods' in trying situations, that is usually sweets, potatoes, warm breads etc. the no appetite thing also happened to me the first time I was on atkins but look at it as a plus rather than a negative.
You have to always remind your self that this is a lifestyle change- not just a diet. As the system starts to work it will have you getting conflicting signals- you are not hungry since you are on ketosis rather than the normal glucosis but all your past experiences tell you that in stressful situations you should be snacking on comfort foods and craving more. hang in there. your doing great

Loss of appetite is one of the side effects of Ketosis. But, it is important not to go more then 6 waking hours without eating! Your revving up your metabolism and not eating will shut it down. Like feeding the fire........ keep it going!!
