  • Crazy weight fluctuation

I do realise that I can't go by what the scale says every few hours or even every day, but last night I got on the scale and could have cried when I saw I was up to 216 (today is day 5 for me and I started at 214). And although I'm really not one of those scale "junkies" this morning when I woke up I decided to hop back on and take another look...this time 207! And I even woke up with my monthly "friend" (sorry if that's TMI). Does anyone else ever experience such an extreme weight fluctuation overnight like this?...I didn't even have one of those whooshie pies everyone talks about!

I'm happy for what I saw this morning, but I'm going to wait until my full first 2 weeks are up to weigh myself again...then I'll change my stats accordingly

It's no problem for your body to retain 5 -15 pounds of extra fluid prior to TOM, or after eating a very salty meal, or after a particularly strenuous workout. Even medications can make weight fluctuate. But you aren't doing atkins really for the sake of the number on a stupid scale, right? You want your measurements and body fat% to decrease and your fitness to improve. Don't take that machine too seriously! Weight loss will be a trend over time resembling a stock market graphh.

      Re: Crazy weight fluctuation

So the 216 was yesterday evening/night? Not at all unusual to weigh more in the evenings than after a night's sleep and TOM - don't even get me started...sometimes he brings 10 pounds of water with him...when I was doing Atkins before, it eventually got to where the water retention was there for the week before TOM arrived and gone by the time he showed his face When I was "off the wagon" and eating junk it often took until after TOM left for the water weight to leave...I'm tracking it again this time to see what happens just because I am curious...all of this is to say, what you eat, your monthly cycle and when you weigh all play into these fluctuations. If you weigh, then drink a 16 oz bottle of water and jump right back on the scale, I promise you will see that pound of water on the scale - but you didn't "gain weight" Good plan to just weigh again at the end of induction. That number is the one you will need to plan the rest of your Atkins! Have a great day!

My advice would be to NEVER weigh at night!!! I always weigh first thing in the morning after using the bathroom - it's when my scale reads the lowest.

          Re: Crazy weight fluctuation

Thanks girls for your replies. No, I'm definitely not planning on going by soley by what the scale says..I'm FAR more interested in feeling the difference in my clothing! I think because I DON'T weigh myself alot is why I was so blown away by the difference I was seeing. I never realised weight could fluctuate by THAT much in such a short period of time. Of course good ole TOM screws up everthing, doesn't it? hehe.

I'm just going to keep chugging along and do what I've been doing, working up my time on the treadmill and take my measurements (I haven't done that yet ) and we'll hope for the best when I step back on in another 9 days.

            Re: Crazy weight fluctuation

Rather... always weigh at the same time of day. Mornings before breakfast are best because you won't have the weight of a recent meal to confuse things. Best of all is your idea to not weigh until after induction.

Your scale fluctuations are very likely due to TOM. Water retention can be a beast, even when you don't feel particularly bloaty. I always used to put on 3-4 lbs a couple of days before TOM, and then hang onto them for several days afterwards.

Measuring is the way to go for a realistic guage of loss.
Hang in there... you'll see results soon, I bet.

And if you're retaining a lot of water, even your measurements may reflect that.
