  • a couple of food questions

hey guys! i have been on induction for about 2 weeks. i know that i am definetly not ready to move on to OWL because i had an induction weight loss stall. plus, the hardest part about induction has been figuring out what i can and can't eat. anyway, i am continuing on with induction. here are some questions i have:

    1. is there such a thing as eating too many veggies from the "salad veggie" list?
i find myself craving salads and can't get enough of them. i am sticking to salads with cheese, bacon, and peppers only.

    2. is salsa legal? i haven't had any yet, but a friend said i could have some.

    3. is there a preferred mayo brand? i see so many recipes on here and on linda's low carb site that call for mayo. all the mayo i have seen at the stores all list some kind of sugar.

    4. on taco bell's web site they say that their mild and hot sauces contain no carbs. is this safe?

    5. i found a candy bar at the store called "zcarb". it is made with splenda, inulin, and erythritol. is this induction safe?

thanks for all the help. i appriciate any and all comments. have a great day!!!~~~~miss ree

Yes, you are allowed 3 cups of salad veggies or 2 cups of salad veggies and one cup of "other" veggies per day.

    2. is salsa legal? i haven't had any yet, but a friend said i could have some.
Salsa is legal if it contains only veggies from the acceptable foods list. Check the ingrediant lists as a lot of premade salasa's have added sugar and whatnot

    3. is there a preferred mayo brand? i see so many recipes on here and on linda's low carb site that call for mayo. all the mayo i have seen at the stores all list some kind of sugar.

I haven't found one but it's really easy to make your own. However, I beleive I read on the board that Helman's mayo s sugar free.

    4. on taco bell's web site they say that their mild and hot sauces contain no carbs. is this safe?

Does the website list the ingrediants as well, if so and if it doesn't contain anything not on the acceptable foods list then it's probably OK but don't forget 0 carbs can mean .4 carbs

    5. i found a candy bar at the store called "zcarb". it is made with splenda, inulin, and erythritol. is this induction safe?

Dr. Atkins said that you can use low carb bars and shakes occasionally for emergency use only. It's the experience of many peole on this board that those types of foods (also known as "Frankenfoods" often cause weight loss stalls and so personally I would say to stay away from them. However, that being said, it's one of those Your Mileage May Vary type of things. Again though, check the ingrediant list, most of those bars have an awful lot of things that aren't on the acceptable foods list (even though they may say induction safe on the package!)

there sauce may be safe but
I believe their food is not safe. If I remember correctly they add soy and fillers to their ground beef and their chicken is cooked in a sauce with sugar.

I wasnt sure if you were just eating the sauce or the food too.

If you move to OWL rung one you can eat more of the allowed veggies!
I stayed on that rung for several 5 net carb additions as I wanted to be able to have more options.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

If you're eating over the 3 cups of veggies per day, you're already doing OWL rung 1

I use Dukes Mayo It has no sugar!!!
I hear it is hard to find, but it's all over the place here, and it's really good
Oooo, and those low carb bars, even Atkins Bars made me stall and gave me terrible cravings.
            Hope that helps

What do you mean you had an induction weight loss stall?????

Personally, I am a HUGE advocate of moving on to the OWL phase after your first two weeks. Since you are already wanting more veggies (and I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you're already eating more than 3 cups per day) you might as well plant yourself firmly in your mind and actions on the OWL rung 1 (veggie rung).

Oh no, I just realized that Mayo has no carbs, but has sugar! Gosh, here I've been using it quite often. Another one bites the dust. I guess it's mustard from here on out. Unless I can find the Dukes Mayo! Thanks for the tip. Good luck Miss Ree

I think the sugar in mayo is not enough to worry about. it's a very small amount. I've used Kraft mayo from day one, and I counted it as 1g per tbsn, I've never had an issue.

Re: a couple of food questions

thanks for all the help guys. don't worry, i'm not eating taco bell---my boyfriend is and he gave me the idea for the sauces. i haven't tried them or the zcarb bars yet. i wanted to avoid them until i researched them. i went out and bought a food scale yesterday. it turns out that i wasn't eating more than 3 cups of veggies a day. i didn't realize how much lettuce it took to equal 3 cups. so it seems i am safe there.bad news is that i was eating more than 4oz of cheese a day. so from now on i will measure out my cheese every morning and only eat that amount all day. thanks so much. remember, i appriciate any and all comments and help.
