  • Question on caffeine detox/induction flu

I know the typical advice is to rest as much as possible and the headaches, nausea, lack of energy, etc. will pass. But I'm wondering - would it be so bad just to take some ibuprofen, especially for the caffeine-detox headaches? Is there some prohibition against it? (I can't remember if this was addressed in the book or not; it's been a while since I read it.)

I am thisclose to being able to give up coffee and the metric ton of artificial sweeteners I always put in it. I was sick last week and have since just lost my taste for the stuff (I've been craving water instead), and I figure I might as well take advantage of that and just stop drinking the joe. But I am a wimp when it comes to pain and discomfort (which was why I threw in the towel on day 6 of my last attempt at Induction - the nausea just would not go away). These headaches get me, just as I know the return of the nausea will frustrate me if I decide to give Induction another shot.

    Thoughts?

Im probably not a good one too answer as i have never drank coffee, diet coke yes, but never enough to get the induction headache as bad as some say it could be? i just get a slight ache nothin major and its gone after 24 hours.

If you feel the need to take ibuprofen i dont think thats such a bad thing, but make sure you dont get addicted to them, just take one when you need one. but it really does all pass very quickly after the first week you'll be feeling better than ever.

I gave up coffee last week when I started Induction, I felt flu like with the nastiest headache - took Motrin and just kept moving so I wouldn't dwell on how rotten I felt. I was a hardcore coffee addict, I'm talking all day coffee, cup after cup, pot after pot.... I don't have any desire to drink it at all. I took the Motrin for 2 days, morning and night and that was it.

Re: Question on caffeine detox/induction flu

I'm in a high stress job and was a regular coffee drinker.

I started the A way of life and attempted go cold turkey on coffee.

        It didn't work.

        We all have different lifestyles.

The lack of coffee gave me headaches and affected my energy level and job performance.

I Left the A way of life...couldn't do it.

A year later...I tried the A way of life again. After reading Dr. A's texts religiously (ah, second hand book-stores rule!) I decided to take a slightly different route:

I DIDN'T DROP COFFEE OUT OF MY DIET...EVEN IN INDUCTION.

And...I found Induction (THIS TIME AROUND) to be a breeze. I had my 2 cups/day in the morning and found the Atkins way to be easy.

        I lost 20lbs in 2 weeks.

Is this the way for everyone? No.

But it is a way FOR ME.

I also socialize a lot and found that vokda and diet coke or gin and diet ginger ale didn't affect my weight loss (while my co-workers/usually overseas business people who see it as needed to have a beer or ten didn't see me as "weird.")

        Again, not for everyone.

But I feel that cutting out the sugars/pastas/bread is the KEY.

Caffeine and some drinks...didn't affect me losing 20lbs in 2 weeks and having my friends I hadn't seen in a few weeks be absolutely SHOCKED.

        + +

        That's my story.

I am a heavy coffee drinker too. Or at least I drink it often. But my coffees are quite light my ten cups a day are probably two to three real cups of coffee the kind served by Starbucks etc.

When I started Induction, coffee was the only sweet thing I had. First, I switched to decaf (which didn't seem to make a big difference) and then I switched to Stevia (I love its taste) and then I switched from the half a cup of milk I used to add to my cofee to a half a tablespoon of very heavy cream. Yumm! I loved my new coffee.

I had 4 or 5 the first couple of days of Induction. After meals it served as my dessert.
Then I cut it back to two cups a day and had herbal tea with Stevia instead. Stevia does not set off any cravings and has zero carbs, so my "deserts" add no calories to my meals at all.

Now that I have lost almost 15% of my total body weight I am on the berry, alcohol rungs. But the alcohol doesn't agree with me too much, I have to dilute it a dreat deal to be able to enjoy it.

I still love my coffee though, but in moderation.
