  • Too little carbs?

    Hi, all!

    Today was my first day of induction & I feel that I did well. I tried not to stress myself out on being TOO technical so that I have a couple days to get a feel for the plan & then work on the technicalities in the days to come.

    What I'm wondering is how to get more carbs in while still staying with in the allowed foods list.

    I only ate 7.7g of carbs today & I know the max for the 14 days of induction is 20g...I ate less than half, is that ok or should I be aiming for more?

    I'm finding it very hard not to go crazy on vegetables. I'm a veggie-holic! Not fruit...just veggies. Today I did well, I think. I had 2 cups of iceburg lettuce for sald with a little onion for flavour & then at supper I had 1 cup of sauteed zucchini.

    Here's my journal for today:

    Breakfast: 3 egg omelette w/ cheese, ham, & a little green onion, fried in EVOO - 1.8g CHO
    Lunch: Chicken breast pan-fried in a little EVOO, 2 cups lettuce w/ EVOO & vinegar & oregano, a little cheese - 0.9g CHO
    Supper: 1 cup zucchini, 1 slice bacon, lean burger patty (no bun) - 5g CHO

    Any suggestions will be welcomed with open ears

    I wouldn't worry about eating too few carbs. I have always varied between about 8 and 15 carbs per day. There's an upper limit, but not a lower one. If you want to add some veggies, you can do so as long as you stay under 20.

    And kudos for being a veggie-holic! There are tons of people trying this WOE who hate most veggies, and really struggle with the requirements. Boy, do they suffer until they get used to it.

      I think your menu looks great!

      never heard of EVOO, i use butter, but as long as its a "good" fat you're okay!

      but remember, even your herbs n stuff have carbs, you can input them into www.fitday.com to get an accurate carb reading for your day.

          EVOO is just extra virgin olive oil, just an acronym that Rachael Ray came up with (LOVE Rachael lol).

          I counted my oregano as .4 using the carb counter on the Atkins site. I hope that's right...

            Hi Sara, The only advice I have is to maybe add more veggies to your iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce has very few carbs or anything really. Try adding some mushrooms, bell peppers. Jicama, maybe different kinds of lettuce. That will up your carbs a little and also give you a little variety.

              yep counting that like that is fine, do check out fitday though, its a great tool especially for getting your percentages!!

              i wouldnt stick with the lettuce everyday, its not got much in nutrients and is just like water and well, theres tonnes of very tasty veggies out there!!

                EVOO? Extra Virgin Olive Oil? How cool... !

                I'd ditto what yma said... if you eat more nutrient dense veggies than lettuce you'll be doing your body a favour and get your carbs up that little bit.

                I'd strongly advise you move to OWL (ongoing weight loss) soon after induction if you love veggies. You still lose weight (many lose more, particularly on the first rung!) on OWL and and you can stay on rung one for quite some time, if you want to.

                  I'm pretty sure you arent counting your carbs right. You're probably higher than you think

                  3 eggs = 2carbs
                  Cheese + Onion = 1carb (assuming you didnt use much of either at all)
                  Herbs + Cheese lunch = 1carb (assuming you didn't use much at all)
                  Lettuce = 2 carbs (4 minus fiber)
                  Onion = 2 carbs (even a small about is carby)
                  Zucchini = 3carbs (cooked)

                  Thats about 12 already if you're being liberal - then think about what else... did you have a cup of tea or coffee? That counts towards carbs. Did you have a diet soda? Any sweetner? And thing?
