Totally confused and certain i've screwed up already!

  • Totally confused and certain i've screwed up already!

    Hey all
    Just recieved my Atkins cook book and Atkins carb counter book and it's totally confused me!
    up til now I've been looking at the back of my Atkins revolution book to work out carbs and weights of veg, and in the cook book it says you can have 3 servings!
    So what i've had veg wise each day is lettuce 75g, pepper 40g, cucumber, 30g, broccoli 2 bits, cauliflower 2 bits!
    So do i continue looking at carb counter and adding it up OR just have 3 servings or recommended weights? and if i do have 3 servings how do i know how many carbs i'm having!??
    As you can see i'm totally confused!

    It can be confusing. For the first two weeks of my diet I used the www.atkins.com website and their carbohydrate calculator. It really helped me keep track and find the correct measurement. It also helps to write everything you eat down to keep track of your carbs. Don't worry about calories. You'll be fine. Have a reward system in place for yourself as well. I have a brand new pair of Victoria's Secret Silk pajamas in two sizes too small hanging on my bedroom wall. when I fit into them I get a day at the spa complete with facials, massages, and mani pedis. Its what keeps me motivated besides the fact I'm losing weight. If you want a diet buddy P.M. me and I'll help you where I can!       Thanks Shari, But which is the right way? to just stick to 3 servings a day off the list OR to use a carb counter and weigh and write things down?
      Seems like i'll be eating alot more veg if i use the carb counter!

        The standard is this: 1 serving of vegetables is 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked.

        In Atkins, during Induction it's 3 cups of the vegetables on the salad list or 2 cups of the salad list and 1 cup from the "other" list.

        Since you are weighing your vegetables, you need to know the cup equivalent of the gram weights. Near the top of this forum is a sticky thread that lists the 1 cup-gram equivalents. If you can't find it, go to the USDA's Nutrient Database website: the foods are listed with their cup measures and their corresponding gram weight.

          Truthfully I dont know what everyone else does but I use the carb counter and write everything down. I might end up getting more veggies but I have a hard time feeling bad about that. Its fiber and that is a large part of this diet. I'd try to stick to the leafy greens or dark green vegetables at the beginning partly because the nutrient value in these is much higher. It also helps keep you blood sugar stabilized, and keeps you energized for those brisk walks you should start out taking.

            If I have 3 servings a day it wont total the recommended 12g carbs a day!??
            and some of the daily menus have more than 3 different vegtables included throughout the day!? when you should only have three??
            So confusing

                I'm confused where you are getting a recommended 12 grams carbs per day from? In the book (2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution), it says we eat no more than 20 net carb grams per day and the majority of it comes from vegetables.

                No, it means that 75 grams of lettuce contains 0.7 grams of carbs. (Which is why lettuce isn't the best choice of vegetable on that list.)

                I have a question for you. Are you from the UK, because the UK edition completely messed up converting US volumetric measures to grams?

                      Thank you SO much Megs!! I think you hit the nail on the head as to why i'm so confused! measurements dont add up, i'm getting differnt grams from different sources! Thanks again x

                        You're making it too complicated. You need three cups of veggies, right?
                        Look up how much carbs are in one cup of whatever veggies. Add it all up for what you've had to eat. And viola! You have your answer.

                          thank god you got that figured out. I wish there was one standard measurement system for everyone. It would make it a lot easier!

                            This worries me. It sounds like you are saying that you think you are only allowed 3 different types of vegetables per day. Unless I've been doing this all wrong for quite sometimes now this is not the case.

                            It's perfectly OK to eat as many different types of vegetables from the list that you want as long as total they all equal less then 3 cups. In other words could certainly have 1/2 cup of 6 different types of salad vegetables.

                              I'm in the Uk and we dont measure in cups, thats why i think i've got myself all confused! LOL
