  • Soy

I'm getting a copy of DANDR (2002) this weekend, but until then, I'm hoping you all can help me. I understand, based on the induction menu from the Atkins website, that soy flour is acceptable on Induction. I'm wondering, though...is soy nut butter acceptable as well? What about edamame? Also, if it is acceptable, are there restrictions? Thanks!

    Re: Soy

    Hello Jeannine,

I love edamame, but I've had to stop eating them for a while. They are not allowed on the induction phase.
In fact, I was shocked how much carbs they have. Put about ten edamame beans in your hand and you have about 9 grams of carbs right there.

As for the soy flour, I'm sure someone will come along and give you an answer soon.

      Re: Soy

As far as I'm aware, soy flour isn't permitted in Induction but can be introduced in a later phase. Soy sauce is mentioned as a legal condiment during induction though.

I'm confused. In the following link, soya flour is listed as an ingredient to make pancakes for breakfast on Day 5.

          Is the site not accurate?

            In a word? no

Atkins Nutritionals happend after Dr Atkins died, basically theyre just out to make money

This board follows Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition, the last book he wrote in full himself before he died.

              Re: Soy

Nope. I would not call that an induction plan. It has Atkins bars & shakes (surprise!!), it has soy flour, it has wasa rye flatbread, it has, my goodness, HONEY mustard!!!

The 2002 book Dr Atkin's New Diet Revolution (DANDR) is the last one that Dr Atkins wrote before his death and is the book followed (strictly) here. The Atkins company no longer has any association with the Atkins family or, as I understand it, with Do Atkins old medical practice and has moved quite a lot from the diet as set out in that book. The company now basically a purveryor of bars, shakes and other 'low carb' foods. Most of which are loaded with sugar alcohols and cause all sorts of problems for people, ranging from stalling weight loss to making them feel awful.

Now I don't understand. One of the samples of Induction menus breakfasts he gives in the book....pg 235....zucchini nut bread.....uses atkins bake mix, which contains soy flour, no?

                  Re: Soy

                  No Sorry not until legumes

you cant use any of the pre-made atkins stuff until all the foods are allowed depending on your rung...

The ONLY thing you eat in induction is the foods off the acceptable foods list, NOTHING else.

                      Re: Soy

Do you have the 2002 edition?

                      I'm guessing not.

The 2002 edition was the last book completely written by Dr Atkins, the ones after that were wrote through Atkins Nutritionals (NOT DR ATKINS!) who are out to make money, hence all the "frankenfoods" bars, shakes, bake mix's...

Sure, these things can be great, but none are good on induction... theyre only good when all the ingredients are within the rung your on and below.

The 2002 edition is the book this board goes by, so you will only ever be given advice based on that book.

                            Re: Soy

well, I agree soy is a legume However, I do believe it is in Atkins Bake mix, which he uses for inducction meals in the 2002 edition.
Personally, I don't care. I can't stand the taste of most soy based stuff. Kind of like powdered cardboard with a bitterness *Yuck*
I wonder why peanuts are allowed under "nuts" when they are a legume as well.

You're right on the book mentioning use of soy flour. My take is that it slipped in there in error somehow, as if it were really allowed it would be on the induction foods list.

And so many of the successful people here have nixed it until the legumes rung - I'm quite inclined to go with their personal experience.
